I'm not real thrilled with Ovie getting an ENG with one second left. He could have just held the puck. Chasing after Gretzky with a bunch of empty-netters isn't a real turn-on for me.
-
BlackIce - I don't like it either, but you have to remember that Gretzky played in the goal-scorers era when goalie pads were smaller and the skill of goaltenders and defenseman was much less. I'll have to find some analysis I saw on that and it basically shows that when you account for all the differences, that Ovi would be well ahead - so I'll cut them some slack for trying to get him some ENGs.
-
Thought they played ok tonight, not great, but they needed the win and got it. Thought Sandin had a really bad game. He has played great for most of the season, but every now and then he has a game where he just makes bad decisions in bunches.
I was really happy to see Mangiopani have a great game. I was calling for him to be on the chopping block, but maybe this game will give him some confidence and he will continue to be a threat.
-
I forget the exact numbers offhand, but I think OV now has 7 or 8 more empty netters than Gretzgy. Not enough to be a big deal. Plus, if getting an empty netter was that easy, it would happen far more often than it does.
-
I wouldn't give a single :poop: if he scored 17 more en's. Just get it done! :raspberry: :snicker:

I disagree. He already has 7 more EN goals than Gretzky yet he's 23 behind on other goals. Last night he was invisible all night then they have him out there just to get some cheap goal at the end. It's not very exciting. He better not tie or break the record on some cheap shit into an empty net. That would be pathetic. Granted, he's played in a much tougher era to score goals but he shouldn't go out with a blizzard of EN goals. It's just not a good look.

When the other team stands aside and taps their sticks, like he's a Make a Wish kid, I'll call foul. As is, if they don't want him scoring en's, don't pull the fucking goalie, twice!

It's not a case of what the other team wants. They're trying to win the game and I'm sure they couldn't care less if Ovi scores an EN goal. I just don't like seeing him hanging around the blueline hoping for a puck to break free while the other four guys are trying to stop the opponent from scoring.

This is actually a fairly complex issue.
I would remind you that Ovie's ENG previous to last night's occurred when he blocked a point shot and the puck bounded out to center ice, where he was able to pick it up. Forwards tend to play higher positions on defense and the defensemen (and sometimes the center) the lower positions. So Ovie, as with a lot of forwards, has better chances to get out on ENG situations, with the opponents looking to press down toward the goal. And he isn't ALWAYS just cherry-picking.
There are other factors to take into account. Teams now are being more aggressive in pulling their goalies -- pulling them with several minutes remaining on the clock instead of just within the last two minutes, and, because of that, pulling a goalie again if a team scores an ENG. This is important in Ovie's case, because Carbery seems to minimize using him when the goalie is pulled with his team up just one, Ovie being a relative defensive liability. But if the Caps score and the opponent pulls the goalie AGAIN, then the pressure is off and Ovie is out there more. Ovie can't help this -- if a team spends more minutes with their goal empty, then Ovie needs to be out there at least some of the time. It isn't like when a team pulls the goalie with a minute or 90 seconds left and the team with the lead will use its best defensive players exclusively, with the end of the game close at hand.
I agree with you - it doesn't look good or feel quite right. But it is what it is, and it is at least partially because of the strategy in the modern game, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see more of it. I'm hoping, though, that at least the goals to tie and pass Gretzky, if/when they occur, come in the course of non-ENG play.
-
As I recall, in Gretzgy’s era, goalies would be pulled with 60-90 seconds left. These days it’s 2-3 minutes, sometimes more.
I did try to find out the percentage of when the defending team successfully scored on an empty net. But a vast majority of the information that comes up is how often the team with the extra attacker scored. Just by the eye test, I’d say ENGs happen far less than %50 of the time the opportunity presents itself. It also seems like goalies are pulled more often these past 10 years.
-
It would be fantastic if Ovi scored the tying and record goals from his back, or knees, or even a blast from his old office, especially as they'll be playing them over and over again on every show. The likelyhood of that however, is slim to zero.
I'll be cheering and celebrating however he does it.
Personally, I don't care how he does it. He has enough highlight reel goals for media to choose from.
I agree that it would be amazing if he did it with fireworks, but my prime concern is that he stays healthy and injury free long enough to get it done. (When do we play Utah again?)

Yep, when the record book has his name there won't be any mention of how many Empty netters he scored.
