Capitals are second-worst faceoffs team in NHL. Does it matter?
Pregame notes

Washington Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom (19) has won 50 percent of his faceoffs through the first five games of the season. (AP Photo/Nick Wass)
Practice was winding down when Capitals Coach Todd Reirden gathered players around the faceoff circle. The team organized into its typical forward lines, and one trio lined up against another. When Evgeny Kuznetsov won a draw, he and wingers Alex Ovechkin celebrated with hooting and hugs. Center Nic Dowd predictably snapped a couple back. Then defenseman Brooks Orpik stepped into the circle and won twice as his teammates roared after each one.
It was a fun turn to a serious deficiency for the Capitals. In the small sample size of five games, they’re the second-worst team on faceoffs in the league with a 43.8 percentage. Washington won 50.4 percent of draws last season, which ranked 13th.
Within the hockey community there’s some debate that the importance of faceoffs is overstated — though an individual draw in a key situation could certainly affect the outcome of a game.
“Certainly there definitely are a lot of different importance levels on different faceoffs, especially the zone and the time of the game, what the score is and all those type of things,” Reirden said. “I think that’s something that’s discussed in our room and a lot of times before the guys go out to take a draw, a few guys on the bench, coaches or players might say, Need this draw, big draw' — different things like that. It’s something that for the most part the players understand and a neutral zone faceoff with 14 minutes to go in the first period is not nearly as important as one that’s five-on-six at the end of the game. We all know that. It’s important to put the right people on those situations and give them the best chance to have success.”
[Devante Smith-Pelly looks to carry over offensive productivity from breakout Stanley Cup run (https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2018/10/16/devante-smith-pelly-looks-carry-over-offensive-productivity-breakout-stanley-cup-run/?utm_term=.7c993002a7d7)]
The Capitals had a faceoff weapon in Jay Beagle last season, who was consistently one of the league’s best centers in the dot and was often deployed with other lines just so he could take a key draw and then get off the ice. But Beagle signed with Vancouver in free agency, and now center Nicklas Backstrom leads Washington with a 50 percent rate on faceoffs, including an impressive 62.1 percent success rate in the defensive zone. Kuznetsov, who’s taken the second-most draws to start the season, has a 35.8 percentage. As a team, the Capitals are poor at power-play draws (42.4 percent) but among the best in the NHL when shorthanded (54.5 percent).
“I think any chance that a skill team like our team could have the puck, we want to have it,” Reirden said.
“I think sometimes it can be a little overrated, to be honest with you," center Lars Eller said. "Obviously offensive zone and defensive zone are to an extent more important than a neutral zone faceoff, I think. But in key situations, on power plays, very important. You start with the puck instead of going back, and you lose 30 seconds sometimes. Certain situations are more important than others, but it’s always good to start with the puck for sure.”
Reirden emphasized that winning a faceoff goes beyond the centers, that’s it’s often on the wingers to win that puck battle. Washington has scored just one even-strength goal in the past two games, so perhaps starting with the puck more would help spark the offense.
“I think we wingers could do some hold-ups a little bit better — hold their guys on their side and be on the right side and not let them through easy,” Andre Burakovsky said. “I think right now we’re just letting them through easy and get to second pucks. I think a lot of times our centers are doing a good job tying up sticks and then it’s our job to get in there and win the puck. We haven’t really done that.”
Nathan Walker draws back into lineup
With the Capitals on a two-game losing streak entering Wednesday night’s game against the New York Rangers, Reirden opted for a minor lineup change. Dmitrij Jaskin, claimed off waivers just before the season, will be replaced by Nathan Walker, who’s been a healthy scratch for the past three games. Reirden said the decision related to the approach he wants his team to take with the Rangers playing the second game in two nights.
“It’s just a different look,” Reirden said. “A team that’s on a back-to-back, we wanted to really come at them with some speed and tenacity and intensity that we know we always get from Nathan. ... Jaskin will sit this one out and get a view of how things are going now that he’s played our system a couple games.”
Sergei Shumakov injured
The Capitals' American Hockey League affiliate, the Hershey Bears, are off to a miserable 0-5-0 start. And in more bad news, winger Sergei Shumakov, whom Washington signed early last month, appear to have injured his right wrist. Shumakov scored 17 goals in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League last season, and he scored two goals in the Bears' first five games.

it's about frikin time...
not the GDT, but an actual game
-
I was wanting to watch some Caps hockey, so in the last two days I rewatched rounds 1 & 2 of the Caps run to the Cup. I was there all over again and just as emotional. It's so awesome every time I watch it.
I hope everyone that wanted too was able to download all the torrents I had posted after last season. Those 720p 60fps videos are simply awesome to watch. I will keep those forever.
-
Going to miss most of this game. Hey Alta keep me updated on the bonehead plays from 74 or Dylan. You know, what's his name.
-
Evening all!
Thanks for the GDT - very nice as always.
-
For having such a young team in front of him, Lundqvist’s GAA of 1.99 and save percentage of 939 is impressive. And yet, despite this, he has a losing record.
-
I can't watch this team with seeing the quote about Creider
-
Awful defensive coverage by Orlov there. Lazily watched that goal go in.
-
Well that sucked.
-

He did get interfered with a little bit but it was a poor effort.

I don't intentionally push people's buttons. Could be why some of your posts have disappeared, and you haven't figured out why
-
He did get interfered with a little bit but it was a poor effort.
Can't even blame Carlson on that one though, because he went down to block a pass he shouldn't of had to block because he had men right there, had Orlov skated literally an ounce of effort the guy wouldn't of had such a clean shot at a rebound and Carly probably could of pressured the man.
-
Five days to practice and our passing still sucks badly.
-
Still waiting to see the defending Stanley Cup champs at home start playing against a team whose own management admitted this is a rebuild year......and one that played the night before while we are rested.
Hmmm, any other reason to expect us to be leading not losing?

Losing is one thing, pucks bounce what have you. But we haven't had a good shift all game, one unforced turnover from the Rangers was the only time we had any pressure. We look out of whack and the ebb and flow of the game seems to be messing with our D's tempo/planned breakouts right now.
-
Great play by Djoos!!!
-

Yes you do Alta. You may not think so.
-
Great play by Djoos!!!
Ya that was fricken close.
-
Don't we owe Zuccarello an ass whooping? Somehow that sticks in my memory. Too bad Willy isn't here to deliver it. Does anyone remember why I might have this memory?
-
:74:
-
Damn Carlson has a good shot.
-
Yes you do Alta. You may not think so.
Says the Grand Poobah of people button pushing.
-
Yes you do Alta. You may not think so.
Are you saying this without laughing? ‘Cause I am. First thought that came to mind was “pot....meet kettle.”
-
Damn Carlson has a good shot.
Meh! It's OK for a hockey player and a defenseman. :P
-

Hell no I'm not kidding. Alta pushes my buttons all the time. Oh and for the record guys I never said I didnt push buttons. Ive tried to be civil with Alta. We even discussed it via pm but he refuses.
-
He's by far not the only one guilty of this during this game, but that last pass by 74 was heartless and effort-less (as in lacking effort) and failed.
-
Meh! It's OK for a hockey player and a defenseman. :P
Wish I had a shot like that when I played. My slapshot was a joke.
-

I can't defend him because I didnt see it.
-

When I played my slapshot was a legend .. . . . . . . (in my own mind). I was awesome! I wish you all could have seen me, but I don't share my dreams.

When was that? 1920?
-
I can't understand why we look so discombobulated after the third game of the season. We've somehow misplaced that crisp heartened play that got us the cup and 18 goals in three games.
-
My slapshot was something to behold as well.. Scored 9x one day in gym class!! The girl playing goalie wasn't impressed.. :raspberry:
-

I don't know. My dreams never show me a date. It appeared more modern though because the goalies were wearing masks. :clown:

Probably cause we keep getting a week off between back to backs. I think they'll find their stride (or we'll see how bad the limp is) starting tonight and going forward, as the schedule kind of looks normal for a bit.
-
Hell no I'm not kidding. Alta pushes my buttons all the time. Oh and for the record guys I never said I didnt push buttons. Ive tried to be civil with Alta. We even discussed it via pm but he refuses.
I'm going to propose that you push your own buttons in reaction to Alta's posts. This is what any psychologists or counselor would tell you.
And to be honest, I don't even see much or anything to get worked up over in Alta's posts. You kind of invite the little button pushing that comes your way. I think you enjoy the friction Maaco.
Just speaking real.
ETA
I want to add that I want you to know that I still love your presence here. It's definitely not boring. :hearts:

they never are, that's why you gotta pull the pig tails

lol. Is that what the kids are calling it these days? I "pulled" my share! Wait, that didn't sound right..
-

Agreed Mick. We always get trash by the scheduler makers of the NHL, with several long layoffs between games even when we aren't back to backing. It's just odd stuff. There shouldn't be any stretch where any team has more than 3 days off in an NHL season imo. Otherwise though I think we've looked fine in fits and starts. I mean the Toronto game we looked fine most of the game, other than a few minutes in that third. The Devils game we looked off entirely, but otherwise it's not been that bad of a star in terms of hockey. It's just finding the consistency again for a whole game. As you said, as we normalize with schedule we should be able to find our pace again I feel.
-
Yes you do Alta. You may not think so.
No, I really don't. You just assume it's all about you. I'm sure even up in the tundra you've heard the saying about using the word assume. As far as using the name Dylan goes, it was a well earned nickname and will take more than 3/4 of a season to overcome it. And, I'm being far more polite with you than I normally would with someone that's intentionally being an asshole towards me because of the extra line under my screen name, but by all means keep pushing it
-
:8z:
-
As always our powerplay still looks on point.
-
OV!!!!!!
From Dylan!!!!
-
Wow nice play by 74 at the blue line and of course great shot by Ovi
-
Vrana did not even bring a stick into the sin bin with him.
-
I really wish the zebras had the balls to call an obvious holding the stick, just because Vrana had it up were it shouldn't be doesn't give the opposing player permission to hold it
-
I disagree. I REALLY enjoy seeing Zuccarello getting whacked in the face with a puckj, or any other implement of the game! ;D
-

Don't forget, we are talking about the Rangers. Different rules!

you mean like a shades of grey type game
-
I'm noticing a trend this season where if we have a good structured PK with a strong kill our boys seem to feed off that and have good shifts following that.
-
Some great movement now by the Caps.
-
you mean like a shades of grey type game
I'm not getting the reference. I never saw the movie if that's what you're referring to.
-
That was a borderline check from Kempny
-
Hello All .... I see Burakovsky is still weak as hell on the puck .... :-(
-
I'm not getting the reference. I never saw the movie if that's what you're referring to.
I never saw it either, but I still know the synopsis of it
-
another bullshit call. Orlov did not bring him down or hold him.
-
great PK
-
Even the NBC calling that a fortunate bounce. Can you seriously get a luckier bounce off the faceoff? Awful.
-
Another bs penalty call.
-
another bullshit call. Orlov did not bring him down.
looked to me like he was holding him as he went down
-
Well done, Orlov ..... (and I see what version of Mr. Consistency is playing D tonight)
-
Capitals started this game 30th at the face off dot
-
Great shift by Orly
-
Great keep in by Carlson on this PP.
-
:pp:
:8z:
-
From the top of the office!
-
Great8 Scores! ;)
-
looked like a trip on Kempny, guys don't usually lose an edge like that
-
Its amazing .... its like people don't know he's there. Like a big, blurry spot on the ice that people overlook ....
-
I'm almost surprised they called that, I had my arm up, but surprised they called it
-
:70z:
-
I'm almost surprised they called that, I had my arm up, but surprised they called it
It made up for the BS call on Orlov.
-
Hey peeps!Been watching= mostly. Usual techs, you know how it is. ::)
We're looking sprightly after such a long lay off.
-
Could we possibly have done a better job of WASTING that PP?
-
nice recovery by Orpik keeping his jock strap on
-
Walker is a dumb ass. No point in begging for that penalty.
-
shit
-
Caps are playing on their heals now
-
Win or lose, except for the PP I am seriously not liking the way we are playing.
-
We need a Kuzy or Oshie sighting
-
I am really not liking this Caps team. Fucking losers today. We don't deserve to win this game. AT ALL!
-
LMAO! Announcing the next came they introduced Brad Marchand as "The Little Ball of Hate Brad Marchand".
-
Jesus, even Backy's passes SUCK ass today.
-
:2z:
-
good things happen when there is a guy there for the rebound
-
I didn't think we were as bad as some of you were saying. Admittedly my viewing pleasure was frequently interrupted, but still....

I felt like we had gone back 3 or 4 years. There were times this game when our guys appeared to be lost on the ice. Coundn't pass, lack of effort, couldn't make easy decisions to clear vs. puck handle. Just scary stupid stuff IMO.
We also had moments of excellence. Our PP's were mostly well played, bar one.

glad that's not my typo, don't wanna be accused of stuff
see, that's what an intentional poke looks like

glad that's not my typo, don't wanna be accused of stuff

LOL, I did not see that.
-
LOL, I did not see that.
Ha ha! Even I saw that from waaaay over here! :P
-
Lundquist is now the goalie that OV has scored the most on(37), which moves Fleury to #2(36).
-
Ha ha! Even I saw that from waaaay over here! :P
The sad part is that we all like Carlson a lot, we just don't worship his excrement, which comes out from time to time. I think we spread that crap fairly amongst the deserving players. My typo was accidental, as was the second one on Pionk. I was in a rush to get it done and move on.
-
Good night all. I'm going to go fly now on VATSIM and try to brush off the frustration of watching that game.
I'm not happy with the inaccurate reviews of the game in the post game shows. Time to do something less stressful, which is actually highly stressful at times.
Damn, that game really did not sit well with me.
-

LOL! I thought it was pretty funny. But yeah, I didn't think it was intentional.
Still funny though.....
-
OT was fairly ugly, until it wasn't.. Thought for the whole game they looked about as I'd expect. Goalies where the best players on the ice, imo.. Good to get the 2 in the end. Get the rust knocked off and head to Fl..
-
Didnt sound like we played very well. Got the 2 points. BTW we are pretty much on par with last season after 6 games.
-
LOL, I did not see that.
autocorrect on an Icrap device is a pain in the ass, it makes up things at times. It was never like that on a pc
-
I have to wonder how long it's gonna be before Burt gets a night off? Dude just seems lost at the moment. And as dpf said, he's so weak on the puck? He's 6'3" and 200+?? WTF??
-
I was a little surprised at all the negative comments about our play. We did look a little sluggish at times, but we had the better scoring chances I thought overall.
If you take out the BS NHL Rangers bias and get rid of a couple penalties (and call the interference to Orlov that resulted in a ranger goal)...then I think we outplayed them.
Ovie rang the iron, otherwise would have a Hattie - and we had some bad puck luck.
good news is Holtby looked sharp. We were off somewhat, but not as horrible as I would think reviewing the board comments.
And oh yeah - Maako, you is seriously a Carlson lover. I mean Carlson has grown on me over the last 3 years and he had a great year last year an is playing really well so far this year....but Jesus, Man...have some restraint in your man-love for ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING related to Carlson. You can't even control yourself and NOT comment EVERY TIME he does something. (and you also have a little hatred anti-vibe against Niskanen and Orlov (and any Caps D not #74) - You are always berating their play) Ragging on them does not make Carlson look better to the rest of us. Maybe you don't notice, but it is very apparent.
(now THAT is button pushing)

You know I'm just messing around. I'm not gonna stop until it gets boring. But ya 74 is growing on me. He might make my top 5 players of the Capitals present roster.
-
I have to wonder how long it's gonna be before Burt gets a night off? Dude just seems lost at the moment. And as dpf said, he's so weak on the puck? He's 6'3" and 200+?? WTF??
Hey Mick.
We sit in 105, which is behind the goal, on the “attack twice” end. We got to see a couple of puck battles against the boards involving Bura, more close up. Certainly, he is quite weak! A couple of times I kept my eyes on him, immediately AFTER he gave up the puck. He was even more PUSSIFIED than I thought. It went like this...
Bura gets challenged by opponent. Puck is scrambling for just a few seconds between feet and sticks of both players at the boards below goal line. Opponent emerges with puck, starts skating back up ice. Bura appears dejected, skating slowly away from the boards area he just got robbed from. He seems more pissed about his “missed scoring opportunity”, than the fact that he is lagging behind, putting more of a burden on his fellow LINEMATES, who now have FOUR skaters against our opponents FIVE skaters at the other end.
A few moments later, Bura realizes its a fuckin TEAM GAME, and tries to skate his ass off, to join his 4 teammates, already in position, who are trying their best to defend OUR NET!!! End of story!!!
Buras already marginal play and “head” issues, (he saw a sports shrink, FYI, over the summer, in Sweden), REQUIRED him, IMO, to have come out strong and EARLY, for him to receive ANY justification for keeping him around. HE SIMPLY HAS NOT!!! He has ZERO goals or assists, and has added ZILCH defensively!! We, as fans, are reduced to the same DAMN waiting game with this headcase, that we’ve been subjected to for MULTIPLE YEARS now!!!
I say SCRATCH THE SOB!! PREFERABLY YESTERDAY!!!
Sorry I held my emotions back a little, Mick!!🤣🤣😂🤣🤣

Don't get me wrong, I think Carlson is great (did I really just say that?), but you are over the top with him.
Hey Rich!
I agree with you. Both in not seeing the game that negatively, and Carlson’s better play! And, oh yeah, agree too on Maaco’s, #74, man-crush! LMFAO!!
I gotta give Maaco some credit, as he’s actually been pretty cool about it. Props Maaco!! However, I’m tempted to order a cake for you, take a pic, and post it here!
It will be round with white icing, and little pink candy carnations forming a heart shape on the top. In the middle of the heart will be the numbers #74. Then rising up, out of the center, on a small post, will be an animated cartoon drawing of Carlson shooting a slapper, and YOU, like Cupid, hovering above the ice, on little white wings, an admixture of hearts and doves floating around your head, as you lovingly gaze upon him!!! (Sorry Maaco, of course just joking, but I couldn’t resist)!
Actually Rich, I can’t believe I’m saying good things about Carly, either! He is better. He seems to be processing decisions a bit quicker, and reacting faster! He also seems to give more effort than before. He still relies too much on his poke check, when he ought to straight take on an opponent. But he’s progressing slowly North at least. Hopefully, it continues! My new negative focus is on Bura. But that’s another story for later.
BTW Rich, do you usually go to games too?

Thanks, I needed a good laugh. Now I'm craving cake. I've been questioning Bura since the old boards, which would've been his 2nd and 3rd full seasons. He's got great potential but he's far too inconsistent in his play. At this point there is no way he should need another "resset" unless it's to another team

Yep, agree with Alta and Puck.. I wasn't suggesting he get scratched for a reboot tho.. Just scratch him cause he's, not very good. He's very talented but as has been said a bunch, just doesn't seem able to turn that into a "team" asset.. He's great on the rush, one on one. Everything else, not so much.
As for Carlson.. Coming off last year, with no boneheaded plays yet this year.. He should be every Caps fans' favorite defender, at the moment.. He's doesn't really play with any edge, but if provoked he can/will get physical.. Kinda Orpikish, you know? Not a fighter kind of tough, but he'll return a body check if needed.. It'd be great if he was an aggressor, but then he'd probably burn out sooner. With that long contract, what we're seeing at the moment is perfect, imo.. (as usual, I reserve the right to hate his ass at any given minute, going forward) :raspberry: :P

I think everyone has the same opinion if Burakovsky. He just doesnt get it.

The window on shipping him out is closing. Given Wilson being out, Beagle gone, Dowd and Jenkins being little more than taking space on the bench, sending him some place where “he can be a star”, for a solid two-way everyshift player(it two) only makes sense.
That is to the objectivite and logical ones. GMBetaMale and his zealots will still say that showing up for 5% of games is all you need if yoi can sell and buy jerseys

autocorrect on an Icrap device is a pain in the ass, it makes up things at times. It was never like that on a pc
Sadly, I was on a pc and can't blame it on IOS auto-correct. I must say though that my iPhone 8 seems utterly retarded when I use voice recognition. I can enunciate clearly and it types the most ridiculous things in spite of me. I think Siri is a little upset with my name calling when she acts like a twit. :P

You know I'm just messing around. I'm not gonna stop until it gets boring. But ya 74 is growing on me. He might make my top 5 players of the Capitals present roster.

It'll be back open as soon he hits a stride for a couple games.. But then they'll not even consider it cause they think "this is it".. :poop: Oh well, either way he'll be making Connolly or Jaskin type $ next year..
