Nick Jensen to debut today, replacing Christian Djoos in lineup

Headline photo: @Capitals
In his pregame media availability, head coach Todd Reirden has confirmed that defender Nick Jensen will make his debut as a Washington Capital in today’s game against the New York Rangers.
Jensen will initially pair with Brooks Orpik, replacing Christian Djoos in the lineup.
The forward lines are mostly unchanged, except for Travis Boyd replacing Chandler Stephenson on the fourth line.
In his media availability, Reirden says he is easing Jensen into the lineup with a veteran.
Who Jensen replaces in the lineup long-term is an open and sensitive question, as I addressed on Saturday:
Adding Jensen to the lineup does not come without risk though. When the Capitals added Kevin Shattenkirk two years ago, his appearances came at the cost of Nate Schmidt, then a promising, underused player, rather than Karl Alzner, a big-minute veteran who could no longer keep up. I worry that Jensen will have a similar effect on Christian Djoos and Brooks Orpik. Orpik, 38, has done well in a small role this season, but sheltering him has come at the cost of Niskanen’s workload.
The Caps acquired Jensen, 28, from the Red Wings last week and extended him to a four-year deal shortly after.

Let's GO CAPS!!!
Win in regulation time, or else!

Wanna see better performance from us today!

Let's GO CAPS!!!
Win in regulation time, or else!
Yep, every Conference game is a 4 point game, particularly this time of year. While currently not looking well, the Rags are more than capable of making a run,(albeit help from other teams will be needed).
-
It looks much better than yesterday 8-0 :snicker:
-
what a fukin joke this team has become
-
:O=
Jesus Christ! They scored simultaneously with my phone popup telling me the puck dropped.
-
Kuzy needs to make that play 😡
-
Had the Rags not oversigned Smith, Id love to have him here, maybe we can trade Orlov for him 🤣
-
It’s PP!

it's always good when Willy is laughing in a guy's face

It’s PP!
The Rags are putting on a PK clinic, hope the Caps take some notes
-
I'm gonna be nice about keeping the puck in on the point during a pp
-
If the Caps don't up their physicality this game we can write this one off.

The constant drop passes as we cross the blue line is beginning to annoy me.
Also, at the game.

Are you referring to the "slingshot" they love to use so much, especially on the PP?
It annoys the piss out of me, but interestingly enough there's supposedly research that supports using it (i.e. slingshot leads to more zone time/more goals or something like that). Either way it feels so predictable and all the extra speed in the world won't help if you insist on stick handling through all 4 PKers rather than going around them.
-
Hey peeps. How's it hanging? Bit tardy today, sorry. Turned up just in time for our first goal............. :uh-huh: Our guys were obviously waiting for me.. :P

More zone time maybe but useless zone time. You miss the pass, delay deep entry, give the goalie more time.
It's just stupid as we execute it.

I found the evidence! :uh-huh:

GET RID OF THE CONCOURSE CAMERA!!!

I'm about 40 minutes behind and
Willie Scores PPG
-
Sorry. I started to say (then Willie scored)... That Kempny's goal was a direct result of Burka coughing it up and then Connolly hustling to get to it.
Fucking Burka should just be sent packing
-
And...so nice to win a draw on PP. I think face offs are most critical on PK and PP.
-
Jensen seems to be fairly decent defensively. He played better without his stick than some of our current players. Can't be tell if he is just excited to be here.

I wish more of The Caps did what Strahm (sp?), did there more often. Roughed up, insulted, won a fight and took a top defender off the ice for 5mins

I gotta bad feeling about this

The Rags played hard and fast and gave us a run for our money. Exciting game to watch and a good win. We have got to learn to lock down with defense when we have late game leads. I'm happy though and I still see a Caps team capable of anything they put their minds to.
-
A win is a win. No way should we have given the Rags a point though.
King Henry's looking a little slow. Not sure he's got much time left. Huge respect for the guy, but I think it's time for him to retire now.
Copley was pants today. :stirringupshit:
Newbies looking good and Backus actually shooting.
Mixed feelings about this game, for sure.
-
Not that much to feel good about IMO. We gave up two goal leads twice and allowed 5 to a bottom feeder at home, even with them sitting guys out. Way too sloppy in our own end and too much sucking down on the net instead of picking guys up high. How many times were Rangers all alone cruising down the high slot? The type of game they are playing will get them booted from the playoffs in about 5 games, IF they make it.

The Rangers have some set plays. They kept running down the right wing and shooting across the crease. Why did we keep letting them skate in, unchecked?
-
Welcome to the Caps 3 and 62. :lmao:
-
Hagelin was put on the 4th line with the expectation that he will quickly move up. Does that mean Bura gets bumped down to the 4th?

That's what I've been expecting since I first heard Hagelin was signed. Though if the chemistry of the 4th line performs as it did today they may not want to fuss with that. I also would not be surprised if Hagelin lands on the second line if he plays well. Many possibilities. Imagine the fire lit under Burka's ass if he ends up playing every other game exchanging with Jaskin on the fourth line. Is there anything between his ears to wake up and get him to perform consistently? Hehe.

The weather has cleared and it's a nice day. I think I will fly down to Virginia Beach. I'll try to get a flight plan cleared to fly down the Chesapeake Bay and then up the coast of Delaware..

I’m wondering how many 5+ Goals Against we’ve given up this year. I don’t care if our record is the same at this point last year or not, allowing 5 goals in any game, any league league (with goalies), in any year (fuck “today’s NHL”), this many times is embarrassing and unacceptable
-
Nice they got the 2, but if this keeps up I'll need to up my bourbon game.. Oh, and another goal when the opp pulls their goalie! "Winning" :poop:
-
6 goals for, great
5 goals against against a bad team, not to mention letting them crawl back after earning a 5-3 lead...shit.
I'm glad we got the 2 but it's like our defense thinks it's still the All Star break.

More like, they've been told their team is full of ALL-STARS, so they play D like every game is an All-Star game. 8-0

There’s amount of over confidence with the team, organization, and fan base. The only team in the East playoff picture I’d feel confident facing would be Carolina. Other than that, every team looks better than they did last year. Additionally, everyone will be bringing thier A game way before their down 3 games because they know the Caps are able to get pass the second.
Hell, if the playoffs started today we’d play the Islanders, which is the LAST team we want
-
That was a weird game overall. Watching the game, I though Caps dominated play (as well they should) more so than the Rags, but the score was pretty even. I would say the Caps were the better team overall, but the Rags got some weird bounces or lucky or Copely just wasn't sharp. Can't blame a guy for weird bounces, but good thing King Luney was off his game too. Really got to stop letting teams back in though. Those stupid goals in the last minute have got to stop.
There were certainly no Vezina votes cast for either goalie yesterday, that's for sure.
Glad to get the win even if we begged to give the game away. It's like the Caps team mentality is to plan to play just good enough to beat what the EXPECT the other team's effort/ability is on a given day. When they come up against a lower team that is having a good day, the Caps aren't good enough. Yet when they get up for a good team like Toronto, they are expecting to have to play harder to win and do so. (well...er...sometimes)
We lose that game yesterday if Willy isn't there. He brought enough heart to drag half the team with him. I think he is as important to the Caps success as anyone right now.
Go Caps

Definitely at least 3 "stupid" goals against, due to unlikely deflection or Copley not doing nhl quality tending.. But they just have a hell of a time playing responsible defensive hockey.. Ovie and Kuzy don't want to be bothered in the defensive zone. And unfortunately that sets the example.

I did see Ovie doing his ole... coasting, cruising around waiting on someone to give me the puck routine a little too often yesterday. Hoping he is just conserving energy for when it's needed and not just lapsing into lazy play.

Yes, the forwards must be more responsible but Orlov and Niskanen have been dreadful most of the year. They are a combined -16. Meanwhile, Djoos and Siegenthaler are a combined +12 and sit in the press box.

Djoos was scratched to make room for Jensen. Siegs was sent back down to Hershey to make cap space for Djoos coming off the IR

I know. I'd scratch Orlov instead of Djoos. He's been a walking turnover all year. Niskanen hasn't been much better. I'd give up some offense in order to keep it out of our net. You can't win in the playoffs allowing 4-5 goals per game. Carlson is another one who scares the hell out of you in our end but, of course, he's going to play. One liability back there is tolerable. Two to three is a big problem.
-

Yes, this is one of our biggest problems this year. Nisky and Orlov are realistically our shutdown guys and they have Suketh Greatly this year. Nisky is usually a very plus guy when it comes to +/-. Orlov has always had flashes of dreadful turnover stupidity buy all year this year he has been horrible.
I kind of hoped beyond hope we would solve one of them (okay...Orlov and his dreadful contract) at the deadline.
