Capitals acquire Carl Hagelin from Los Angeles Kings

Headline photo: @Capitals
The Washington Capitals have made their first deal ahead of the trade deadline.
GM Brian MacLellan has acquired Carl Hagelin from the Los Angeles Kings for a third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft and a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
According to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the Kings will retain 50 percent of Hagelin’s $4 million salary and $3.75 million cap hit. Hagelin’s cap hit is $3.75 million because Pittsburgh retained $250k of his salary after trading him to the Kings.
Mike Vogel reports that the Capitals will only have to send a sixth-round pick to LA if they win two playoff rounds and Hagelin plays in half or more of the Caps’ total number of playoff games in the first two rounds.
“We are pleased to welcome Carl to our organization,” MacLellan said in a release. “We felt this trade enables us to add depth up front and provides us with a veteran player with a tremendous amount of speed to help us on the penalty kill.”
Before the Kings morning skate ahead of their game against Nashville, Jon Rosen of Fox Sports West reported Hagelin wasn’t on the ice.
The Hagelin-to-Capitals deal was rumored Wednesday by both Bob McKenzie and Elliotte Friedman.
Hagelin should immediately help the Capitals’ problematic fourth line, which has featured a revolving door of players all season long.

The 30-year-old left wing has averaged 13 goals a year for the last seven seasons.

Despite only tallying eight points in 38 games during the 2018-19 campaign, Hagelin was likely targeted by the Capitals due to his speed, tenaciousness, and experience. Hagelin won two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins (2016, 2017). Not only that, he’s a noted Caps killer, scoring six goals in 35 career playoff games against Washington.

The undersized Swede is in the final year of a four-year, $16 million deal.
Hagelin will practice with the Capitals in Buffalo Friday and play Saturday against the Sabres.
More from the Capitals:
The Washington Capitals have acquired forward Carl Hagelin from the Los Angeles Kings for a third round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft and a conditional sixth round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.
Hagelin, 30, a native of Sodertalje, Sweden, recorded five points (1g, 4a) in 22 games with the Kings this season. Prior to being acquired by Los Angeles on Nov. 14, 2018, Hagelin recorded three points (1g, 2a) in 16 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 5’11”, 186-pound forward’s 53.38 shot attempt percentage (245 shot attempts for, 214 against) ranked second on Los Angeles at five-on-five. Additionally, Hagelin’s 1:13 minutes per game on the penalty kill are the fourth most among Kings forwards with at least 22 games played.
In 526 career games between the New York Rangers, Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, Hagelin has collected 230 points (90g, 140a). Selected with the Rangers’ sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2007 NHL Draft, Hagelin’s 230 points rank 16th among forwards selected from that class.
A two-time Stanley Cup winner (2016 and 2017), Hagelin has 47 points (22g, 25a) in 121 career playoff games, which is tied with Alex Ovechkin for the second-most playoff games among the Capitals (Orpik: 149) and tied for the 12th most among active NHL forwards. Additionally, Hagelin’s 216:42 minutes of penalty kill time in the playoffs is the sixth most among active forwards. Hagelin recorded 16 points (6g, 10a) en route to Pittsburgh’s 2016 Stanley Cup, the fifth-most points on the team.

I'm thinking Backstrom will like this.
Let's GO CAPS!
-
Sending DSP down will make for one less holdout that refuses to go to the White House, leaving only Connolly and Orpik as the meatheads. It couldn't happen to a dumber liberal.
-
Can hardly wait to see what we're in for tonight..
-
Expecting a blow out loss because we suck. Hoping Ovi scores a goal or two because him getting the Rocket will be the only trophy we have a chance of getting this year.
-
Morning chaps. Early start tonight, huh?

Yup.
Maybe Alta lost his sense of humour because he's another year older/??

WoW!!!!
-
Morning!
-
I surprised we didn't get called for too many men given the pipes are rocking the red for us!!
-
Exciting start.
Gonna get tetchy at some point, methinks. :uh-huh:
-
Freddy Andy's got a good record this year. We're going to have to get in tight, I think and get greasy.
-
Amazing they did not score with all those chances. Holtby standing on his head again.
Exciting to watch both ways!
-
Lot of trading punches.. Seems like every time there's a loose puck they beat us to it though. Gotta make Anderson move side to side with crisp (ie NOT LAZY SOFT) passes..
-
Laffs looking pretty speedy these days. Their passing is better than our some way.

I was ready to say the same, but what they showed did not look like a penalty to me.
-
Seems Bears don't just shit in the forest. :snicker:
-
Best second period I've seen from us for a long, long LONG time.
-
They called that a crosscheck? :poop:
technically that's what it was. I'm surprised they called that pick earlier, it's about 10th one I've seen this year run against the Caps
-
That was a solid 20.. Not sure WTF Burt was thinking as we're going to the PP, but not surprised.. We like to do stupid shit at least a few times a night.. :uh-huh: lol
-
I just watched that back. Reilly dove to draw the penalty. Burka was coming and just held his arms up and barely touched Rielly in the back. SOLD!!!!
-
I was ready to say the same, but what they showed did not look like a penalty to me.
Even if it was or wasn't a soft call, after 5 years in the league when you get a call going your way you should be on your best behavior to not fuck up the PP chance. That was a bad penalty to take. Bura is a detriment to our team, full stop. I fail to see what value he adds. Maybe if we were paying him the entry level minimum MAYBE I could see him being a serviceable 4th line or depth guy, but he brings very little in relation to his cost (both monetary cost and the cost of him being shit on the ice)
Good news though - overall I don't have any complaints about the team's play, yet. If all I'm nitpicking right now is one retard who I expect to be a retard, then that's a pretty good sign
-

I'm more than ready to hammer 65, but in fairness he was skating and just trying to stop. He barely touched Reilly who had stopped behind the net. I'm not sure what else he could have done.

And that's why he's still on the team.. Nobody "really" wants him. We'll probably end up retaining salary if he is moved, which I doubt he is..

Could have requested a trade ;D

-
Short Willy!!? :snicker:
Carlson playing like shit all night, btw..
-
Caps needed that in a bad way, Dylan almost let the Leafs back in the game
-
Huge goal by Wilson, and hopefully they get work done on this PP to help put the game away
-
Seems I'm a little behind again........ :snicker:
-
Talking of asses, where is Maaco? Surely whatever bollocking is over by now? Not that I'm complaining, you understand. It's much more peacefull on here recently and much more fun without all that forced aggression. Was just wondering.
-
Bottom six playing for their spot tonight. :uh-huh:
-
Bottom six playing for their spot tonight. :uh-huh:
It is kind of obvious eh! :uh-huh:
-
Holtby has been spectacular tonight. Surely the 1st star!
-
I had mentioned elsewhere that a trade would spark a fire under everyone else, and was promptly shot down for it
-
ENG for pizza!
-
:O=
OH CRAP!
-
I knew that was going to happen after watching the Caps not try to score
-
Ouch. That one hurts. :(

Wha?
-
WE WON!
We played well against a good team and it was a fun game to watch. WHOO HOO!
There was intent, there was heart, there was even the odd bit of D 8-0
-
Wha?
Did I stutter?? :raised-eyebrow:  How many games in a row have we given up a goal, when they pull their goalie? It's been at least 3 iirc..
-
Caps are in 2nd place in the Metro with 75 pts, 1pt behind Trotz. Unless the Bolts just crap the bed, looks like they will win the presidents this season, they have 96 pts, 15 ahead of Calgary, the closest competitor
-

Your phraseology was a little .... confusing. You grumpy old fart. :raspberry: Our goal wasn't empty, wo we didn't and COULDN'T "give up" and ENG.
Jus' sayin' :raspberry: :raspberry: :raspberry:

Put it down to the language barrier. ie: You can't speak proper English, like what I does. :P
-
Sorry, i was helping my son with something.
I did not realize we gave up an ENG. I did not catch that one.
I thought we played a good game. Defense is suspect and without Holtby standing on his head this could and would have been a different outcome.
Fun game to watch.
-
Hens got smoked by the Sharks tonight 4.0
-
That was actually a really decent game from our guys. I suppose in comparison. There were some issues, for sure. Getting in to the zone, getting out of our zone. The usual passing, but that wasn't quite as prevalent as recent outings. We spent a fair bit of time in their zone.
Excellent goaltending. Even some D to back him up occasionally.
HEART and fight.
A good game to win.
-

 Nearly spit my bourbon.
Good game, Night peoples!
-
One of their better games and our forwards were really hustling back on defense. I thought Boyd and Dowd played really well tonight. Not so much for Kempney - he's having a tough year.
The game tonight looked like playoff energy!
-
Woo-Hoo!!!! Islanders just lost in OT to the Oilers. They got a single point. Oilers were down 3-2 and tied the game with less than 3 min left.
-
We're still in the run for the play-offs. Shocking, considering how badly we've payd ths far. But we're still in it.

I have to admit, as one of the more negative people on the boards always cursing up a storm about how much the Caps suck, I don't have much to complain about this game. Some stupid penalties, sure. And maybe they let the Leafs get too close for comfort by giving up the garbage time goal. But overall a solid performance, and Holtby really stood on his head.
This was much different from our Kings win, where all I could think of was 1) no shit we're supposed to be able to beat a bottom feeder team; 2) we didn't beat them convincingly enough considering they're a bottom feeder team; and 3) Caps still suck despite the win.
This Leafs game was actually a pretty solid showing. I felt like I saw more effort and conviction than usual, better passing, less retarded plays, outstanding goaltending, and the PP clicking again thanks to Ovi is a good sign. And this was definitely not a pushover team. Limiting a potent Leafs team to only 2 goals is pretty damn good work, unlike our "effort" in allowing the very shitty Ducks to score as many goals against us as they had in their previous 6 games...
We've earned ourselves a little bit of breathing room. If the team that showed up today plays the rest of the season, then we can actually make the playoffs. The the team that showed up against ANA plays the rest of the season, then we all might as well pack our bags and hit the golf course now.
-
I thought it a pretty solid game by the Caps. They looked energetic.
Holtby definitely saved the game for the early. Liked what I saw overall though. Love seeing Willie score, and his "home town". Man he has some wheels. I can't imagine what it feels like to be freight trained by him at full speed.
I was going to make some smartass comment BEFORE the game about how much time the players spent at the Hall of fame and such....and maybe they should be practicing, but maybe it woke em up a bit.
Let's hope so.
Go Caps

Well, I made a comment before the game expecting a blowout (like 7-0) loss. Glad I was wrong.
-
Well, I made a comment before the game expecting a blowout (like 7-0) loss. Glad I was wrong.
Hey Zero.
This EFFORT thing is exactly what I’ve been mentioning in my last few posts!
I totally agree, in that WE DID see a REAL effort for damn near, just short of the entire 60 mins!
It’s amazing, the difference in how this team behaves every week, hell, every other game! LOL!
Said in a different way, (paraphrasing from a recent Carlson postgame quote), where he talked about having to give a real effort, again, saying guys just can’t show up and play, “when they feel like it”!!
This issue is a two-edged sword, that holds our emotions, as fans, “hostage”, in a way. WHY?? Because I don’t like the natural, emotional, ups and downs, that occur when our team WINS or LOSES, being predicated on whether a few guys didn’t “FEEL LIKE PLAYING” at a professional level, that night!
Lack of talent, a speedier, quicker opponent, goalie has a bad night, injuries....all WAY BETTER reasons for accepting a loss more easily! DIDNT FEEL LIKE IT!!! (at the money they make)....Fuck off, then!!
Lack of effort, once in a while, is even hard to tolerate, but as often as it happens this year, it has the sense of cheapening the fan/team/player relationship!
As if we’re supposed to feel FORTUNATE, when they ALL come together, and play with good effort, that we already know they’re capable of!!! When they DO, we fans KNOW, they are one of the leagues best!
IMO, it’s collectively POMPOUS, as a team, to possess the real talent, and show that you CAN bring the effort, then, start coasting in and out of CHOOSING to bring it, at the fans emotional expense, because your good enough, to have the choice, and remain in playoff contention!
CHEAPENS THE WHOLE DAMN THING!
This Leafs/Caps game was great to watch. Hands down!
We are left, with the remainder of this season, with only the hope, that they will CHOOSE to bring the effort, that we know they can! YES, I said CHOOSE!!
(Wasn’t that long ago, that as professional sports players, this CHOOSING crap, wasn’t even a subject to be discussed, AND the coaches NEVER tolerated lack of effort)!
Lombardi would have put a Riddell, coaches shoe imprint, on the back of your ASS!!! GEEZ ALERT!!LOL 😂
Rush
