Andre Burakovsky a healthy scratch again when Capitals face Devils

Andre Burakovsky, who missed the two games before the Capitals’ now-passed bye week due to illness, will be a healthy scratch when the Capitals face the Devils. The 22-year-old winger was expected to be a reliable top-six forward coming into the season, but has since bounced around Coach Barry Trotz’s lineup and missed time due to injury and a few healthy scratches. Trotz indicated Thursday morning that Burakovsky, who rotated into the Capitals’ fourth line during their morning skate, is a healthy scratch because of the time he missed before the five-day break. The Capitals were also unable to practice yesterday due to travel delays, which means Thursday was Burakovsky’s first time on the ice in more than a week.“He’s been on break for quite a while now,” Trotz said. “So to give him the best chance to be successful, get a good skate today and I expect him to go in tomorrow for someone and let’s get him rolling in the right direction.“He was going to be in in the Carolina games but he got sick, so now he’s a week-plus without being on the ice. So I just think this is his best chance to get back after having a little bit of the flu.”
The Capitals will be well-rested against the Devils Thursday. That might be a problem.

When the Capitals play the Devils tomorrow, they will do so without anything more than a morning skate to regroup after a bye week. (John McDonnell/The Washington Post)
Of all the positive consistencies of the Capitals’ last two seasons — rock-solid goaltending, production from the first power-play unit, winning in the regular season — they will confront an unwanted trend Thursday night in Newark. The Capitals have been noticeably slowed following long layoffs, whether it be after last season’s bye week or longer-than-usual breaks between games this year. Now they will come off a four-day bye week with only Thursday’s morning skate to regroup. The team’s Wednesday afternoon practice, scheduled to take place in Newark at 4 p.m., was cancelled due to travel delays, which also means Capitals Coach Barry Trotz and players were not available to the media. The last time the Capitals were on the ice together was last Friday night in Raleigh, as they celebrated a last-second goal by Jay Beagle to head into the break with six wins in their last seven games. That improved the Capitals to 28-14-3, good for first place in the Metropolitan Division, and now they face the second-place New Jersey Devils (23-12-8). The Devils have the NHL’s seventh-ranked offense (3.1 goals per game), sixth-ranked power play (22.1 percent) and are coming off a 4-1 road win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday. In the other locker room, the Capitals are coming off a four-day break filled with vacations and time with family.Washington entered last season’s bye week on a six-game winning streak. When they resumed play, the Capitals dropped back-to-back games. After a four-day gap between games in October, the Capitals dropped a 6-2 result to the Vancouver Canucks. After a four-day gap between games in November, the Capitals lost, 5-2, to the Los Angeles Kings. And after after a three-day gap between games in December, the Capitals spoiled a great start by Philipp Grubauer and extended a losing streak to three with a 1-0 shootout loss against the New York Rangers.Statistically, the Capitals are not successful when well-rested. Soon, with back-to-back nights at New Jersey and hosting the Montreal Canadiens, they will have another chance to turn a brewing trend into hollow, forgotten numbers.

I will be shocked if the Caps win this game. The fact that they could not practice yesterday really hurts. There is no way that they can turn in a quality performance after having been off 5 days and not having any practice. This could get ugly tonight and I feel sorry for Holtby. He is going to be in for a long night.

yea, this bye week is complete bullshyte, the premise is a damn joke combined with the horsecrap schedual this year then not being able to practice before the first game off of it.... this is the stupidest thing ever to come out of a CBA
-
I dont like the bye week either. Usually we come out flat after a long break. Hopefully its different this time.

Maybe to make a point the Caps should come out like Stooges, falling all over themselves, shooting pucks at the goal, but "accidentally" hitting refs, and maybe even holding their sticks backwards.
:clown:
I am glad they are back on the ice. Watching the other games is not that much fun.
-
I agree. I was freaking out will no Caps games. Watching other teams is fine but it doesn't have the same intensity.
-
ArJ, what does your four colum score sheet mean again?
-

yep, it sucks when what you think is gonna be a week of hot lesbians experimentin ends up being a week of no hockey >:(
-
Better start than I expected. Hope the Caps keep it up. PP was a little off.
-
ArJ, what does your four colum score sheet mean again?
Points, Win, Loss, OT
-
well, at least 74 won't get a minus
-
Points, Win, Loss, OT
you've got a typo in there, Caps have 59pts
-
That flat out sucked!!!!
Turn over and watch the breakaway goal while gliding >:(
Good on DSP for at least tryin
-
well, at least 74 won't get a minus
Why would you even start with that? See what I mean. A couple guys blew it on that play. And the only one you mention is 74. What about 25, 9 and mostly number 2 on that play.
-

Niskanen didnt try at all. Disgusting lack of effort there.
-

Thanks. I always screw at least one thing up. When I do these I first modify my records in a text file and then edit the GDT. I had 59 down in my file. Not sure how I screwed it up. I often forget to mark the correct goalie for the night. I need to slow down and double check my work.
-

I'm trying to point out when he does good, instead of just bad
-
hey, 74 gets a plus!!!!
-
Niskanen didnt try at all. Disgusting lack of effort there.
Yeah, what's up with that? Even when he did skate it appeared half hearted.
-
:10z:
-
I'm trying to point out when he does good, instead of just bad
No you aren't. You are being nothing but sarcastic. The whole Carlson thing is getting old. You should be ripping Niskanen for just standing there and watch the goal happen.
-
well, try somthing 100 times it’s bound to work eventually. . .
-
Yeah, what's up with that? Even when he did skate it appeared half hearted.
I dont know. He should have read that play alot quicker than he did.
-
The Caps are a lot more competitive than I thought after the break. And Holtby is playing well.
-
Yeah, what's up with that? Even when he did skate it appeared half hearted.
Not sure if he’s 100% yet, but regardless I’m hoping he’s not getting frustrated and disinterested.
He must have a lot of additional responsibility and a lot to make up for with this younger and not particularly “defense first” DCorps.
We’ve seen this happen with veterans we sign or acquire before, so I’m hoping he’s not “checking out” mentally
-
I'd rather be sarcastic than facetious :P
-
The Caps are a lot more competitive than I thought after the break. And Holtby is playing well.
they stared well but petered out a bit, hope it doesn't last
-

I agree, playing much better than what I thought although at the end of the period they seemed to run out of gas. I will gladly take a tie after one period.
-
Shit. That sucked
-
Holtby has to stop that shot, there was no angle. Caps are getting totally outshot now, they have to pick it up.
-
When do we give up on the Bowey experiment? He is terrible.
-
He probably should have stopped it. There also should have been a back checking forward
-
Schimtty has a goal tonight!
-
When do we give up on the Bowey experiment? He is terrible.
He hasnt cost us a goal yet.
-
Schimtty has a goal tonight!
Wrong thread

heh Boyle wanted NONE of Willy. Great hit by Willie!
-
heh Boyle wanted NONE of Willy. Great hit by Willie!
I miss all the big hits. My favorite part of the game
-
This PP does not look good, they are not looking like putting it together. Just hap-hazard. Sheesh (yes, that's a word!!! :P ))

-
Holtby looks like shit :poop: tonight..
-
jesus I get up to get a beer and two goals happen?
-
Holtby looks like shit :poop: tonight..
He started off well, but has given up the goals on breakaways.....
-
Holtby looks like shit :poop: tonight..
Agree
-
the instigator should be a double minor, that was a bullshit sequence, except for Willys hit
-
Holtby looks like shit :poop: tonight..
Not his best game. Orlov and Niskanen look like crap tonight. It looks like Niskanen has laced up the skates for the first time.
-
Nisky is having a really bad game.
-
jesus I get up to get a beer and two goals happen?
Well you missed Niskanen and Orlov give up another breakaway and once again Niskanen didnt even try to get back.
-
OMG, what a a night to have a new Geico commercial of Braden Holtby playing the klutz that can't stop anything. ???
-
The pp sucks
-
That was terrible. Awful zone entries, and as a result, no shots on goal. WTF???
-
Yup we look like a bunch of clowns out there.
-
normally I don't put much weight in the SOG stat, but jiminy christmas man, shoot the damn puck!
-
Yup we look like a bunch of clowns out there.
Well said.
-
passing sucks tonight
-
i think it’s safe to say that “deeking” is not working tonight
-
This is difficult to watch. It seems the Caps forgot how to do everything. If we can squeak out a goal soon I bet we come alive and remember it all again. Keep working it hard boys!
:cross:
-
It seems skating is way off. Everyone looks slow and clumsy.
-
i may have just got Spin over!!!
-
Chaisson just bought his ticket to the press box for a few games. What a stupid penalty
-
Not very good tonight.
-
PP is really awfull tonight but again that is not surprising since they have not had a chance to practice it.
-
Woooo Connolly
-
:10z:
-
wooohooooooooo
-
Way to dig deep boys!

wooohooooooooo
LOL, I did not see you post this before I posted mine!
Great Fans think alike!
-
Great pass by Kuzy and Connolly puts it in. Looks like Vrana may have been benched. Connolly does find the open spaces.
-
great, it's extra time
-
I will happily take a point, played much better than I expected. Third period we outplayed the Devils.
-
I pucking hate 3vs3
-
We were lucky to get a point.
-
Got a point, but Holtby just played awful..
-
well that sucked . . .
-
I will happily take a point, played much better than I expected. Third period we outplayed the Devils.
Agreed. Be happy with the point, but Kuzy used to be the BEST 3 v 3 player on the planet. His turnover on that one gave the game away. He tries to be SO cute in the 3 v 3 that he usually winds up turning the puck over.
-
Well that was quick but I thought eveything considered it was a good effort by the Caps. Hopefully, they will be even better tomorrow night against Montreal.
-
Got a point, but Holtby just played awful..
I'm not saying Holtby played great but I hope you realize that 3 of the 4 goals were on breakaways and the other goal the guy was left alone as well. Funny thing is the odds are with the goalie on breakaways but I dont recall Holtby stopping any breakaways.
Orlov had a rough night defensively. At least we got a point out of it. A point we didnt deserve.
-
I think Holtby will be the first to admit that he did not have a good game tonight and again that is not surprising he hasn’t faced any shots in a week so he was rusty.
-
hey Rich, thanks for not saying what we've all been thinking this week
-
A lot of guys didnt have good games. So the question is who gets benched for tomorrows game.i

If I had to guess I would say Vrana.
-
If I had to guess I would say Vrana.
I agree
-
I really, REALLY hate the drop pass on the PP. Everyone is doing it and it is not effective and just slows down the PP. And then, we have to watch 74 casually drop it back with a no-look drop and hope that there is someone remotely close to beat the other team to the puck.

For some reason that seems to be the play teams use to gain the zone. We drop it to Kuzy and he carries the puck in the zone. The 2nd pp unit uses Eller in that spot. I dont really care for it.

It appears that Smith-Pelly and Chorney will be the healthy scratches tonight. What will be interesting is where Burakovsky plays. Does he just take Smith-Pelly’s place on the first line or does Trotz juggle the lines. Today’s morning skate was optional so there was no indication of what the lines were going to be.
-

It looks like a hockey equivalent to a flee-flicker/ half back pass play in foot ball, particularly off a faceoff. Get the opponent coming in, sneak a fast player behind them and have an unexpected player make a long pass to him catching the other team of guard and not in a position to stop it.
If executed, it gives you a break away, and if the skater is caught up with, can lead to a penatly shot or just a penalty. And if all those fail, the other four can quickly get into position during the play.
So to some extent, it exploits the 4th forward and/ or aka the defenseman pinching. If you know that the other teams D is not as concerned with coverage, if at all, its gonna leave that wide open until teams adjust to it, take it away and/or exploit it.
