Brock Boeser took the entire NHL by surprise. Except for T.J. Oshie.

Brock Boeser is a rookie of the year favorite with 22 goals in 39 games this season. (Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports)

Before this season even started, Capitals forward T.J. Oshie was asked to make a prediction. Who was his top candidate to win the Calder Memorial Trophy as the rookie of the year? Oshie confidently said Vancouver winger Brock Boeser “had to be up there in the top three.”
“Whoever it was [that asked] was actually pretty surprised that I said it,” Oshie said.
He looks pretty smart now, when halfway through the season, Boeser has 22 goals, trailing just Alex Ovechkin, Nikita Kucherov and Anders Lee in the league. But Oshie might have seen Boeser’s quick ascension into NHL stardom coming, training with him in the summer and forming a bond through their shared alma mater, the University of North Dakota.
“He really took me under his wing this summer,” Boeser said. “He was a good role model to me. We actually grew pretty close. We started going golfing this summer. We have a pretty good relationship.”
Said Oshie: “He’s a great player. He’s one of those players that he just makes good, strong plays. He has a nice hard shot. He seems not to overthink with the puck; he kind of takes it as it goes and sees what’s open and makes a play. So, great young kid, good hard-worker and obviously lots of talent.”

[‘That was the old Osh’: Caps’ T.J. Oshie snaps drought with two assists vs. Blues (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capitals-insider/wp/2018/01/08/that-was-the-old-osh-caps-t-j-oshie-snaps-drought-with-two-assists-vs-blues/?utm_term=.fbc786e54c83)]

Oshie and Boeser are two of a growing group of Fighting Hawks alumni in the NHL, a contingent that includes Chicago’s Jonathan Toews, Minnesota’s Zach Parise and New York’s Brock Nelson. Boeser helped push North Dakota to its first title since 2000 last year, and then he turned pro, playing in nine games for the Canucks at the end of last season. He scored four goals, a preview of his prolific scoring this season, averaging more than a point per game so far.
“The thing that surprised me most was the jump in his skate, how quick he was from a standstill,” Oshie said. “And also his shot. He doesn’t have the biggest curve, but the way he’s able to release the puck is really quick, really hard. He shoots it very flat, which can kind of squeak into some more holes than when the puck is fluttering a little bit.
“You go to UND, it’s a really close family. I look at him, I see his success, and it makes you feel proud that you went to the same school where you can see a young guy come out and have the success that he’s having.”
Capitals Coach Barry Trotz compared Boeser’s release to Ovechkin’s. “I mean, it’s a bullet and it’s very accurate, and he’s been dangerous,” Trotz said. The last time the two teams played, Boeser scored three assists in Vancouver’s 5-2 rout of Washington, and he leads the league in five-on-five goals per 60 minutes. The Canucks again have among the fewest standings points of Western Conference teams, but Boeser offers the team a future in the post-Sedin twins era that’s fast approaching.

[Boswell: The Washington Capitals are still standing, months after being rattled by cruel blow (https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/capitals/the-washington-capitals-are-still-standing-months-after-being-rattled-by-cruel-blow/2018/01/08/1fe0e570-f48a-11e7-a9e3-ab18ce41436a_story.html?utm_term=.bd4007436fe6)]

Oshie has looked on with pride, but he’ll also be especially motivated on Tuesday night.
“One thing about North Dakota is we’re so competitive, every player that goes there, that when you play against each other, I feel like it elevates your play a little because you want to out-play the other guy,” Oshie said. “That’s the way it is in practice when you’re there. Obviously before and after, you’re the best of friends and you’re roommates, but even in practice at North Dakota, you go hard and everyone just kind of knows that’s just the way it is. You take nothing for granted. I think it feels that way when you get on the ice. A lot of North Dakota guys in the NHL this year, so you take some pride in that.”

Grubauer to start, Chiasson scratched
Trotz has continued tinkering with his lineup, scratching forward Alex Chiasson to get left wing Chandler Stephenson back on the fourth line after Stephenson sat against the Blues on Sunday.
“I really looked at the whole schedule, and the forwards have made it difficult,” Trotz said. “I said to Alex today, ‘I’m taking you out of this game, not because you are playing poorly, but all our forwards are going pretty well.’ I want to get certain guys in, a guy like Andre [Burakovsky] for instance, who missed a lot of time and I want to get him back engaged and productive in the way that he can be. You know, one game, and I want to get him a couple games where he’s getting some traction hopefully. I know we’ve talked and worked with him.
“It’s no different than my decision with [Stephenson]. Stevie last game, he had been playing well, but I thought we are home, and I can do certain things. So we did, and that’s what we’re doing. It’s good on the forwards. The forwards are making it very difficult to move players in and out.”
Philipp Grubauer will start against the Canucks, and it’s likely he’ll also be in net in one game of Washington’s upcoming home-and-home set with the Carolina Hurricanes before the bye week.

ArJ - thanks for the GDT.

Good to see Stephenson back in.  Nice problem for Trotz to have - struggling who to take out of the lineup.   there was a time early in the year when the struggle when have been who to leave in the lineup.

Have to wonder what kind of patience Trotz is gonna have with Burt? Kid's looked lost since he's been back.. Like he's not sure if a hockey game is taking place or not..  :-\

OK, I missed the first 5 minutes. Caught the end of what appeared to be a lackadaisical PP.

Is that what's been going on since the start?

Agreed on both points.  I was surprised the whistle wasn't blown when the net nearly went over Markstrom.  They should have let the net fall over. kind of a rookie move by Markstrom.  I'm sure Holtby would've ensured the net fell over.

I really like the different looks we can give the opponents.  So many weapons in our arsenal.  Makes it tough to defend.

It's an insurance commercial that's got `70s style teenagers that act really dumb. That one doesn't bug me, but I can see how  some would find it annoying. I really can't stand the Verizon FIOS series of commercials with this obnoxious kid that disrespects adults and acts smug and is kind of a know-it-all.  He says things I find misleading, if not deceitful. Verizon is also one of a few companies I refuse to deal with. The other being Sony. and soon to be Apple.

"Hockey" - just so this post is not too far off topic.  :-)

He got in too close to get a good scoring chance.

Caps need to give the Canucks a goal or two to make the game exciting for themselves . . . .  Don't they?   ::) ;D :D

Worth staying up for.
Pretty good performance over all, after a slow start in the first.

Have to wonder what kind of patience Trotz is gonna have with Burt? Kid's looked lost since he's been back.. Like he's not sure if a hockey game is taking place or not..  :-\
LOL Mick!
Bura won’t get much patience from Trotz’s, I’ll tell ya that! 3rd reset in 3 seasons! Don’t know if you caught local Trotz interview, just after Buras 3rd reset. Trotz was unusually candid as to why he reset him again.
Trotz said he was “hoping” his recent 2-goal game, would be a turning point! Trotz said quote, “but it wasn’t. It was a one game thing”!!  Trotz mentioned wanting him to change his “thought processes, and details, SYSTEMATICALLY”!! (The team system of play, NOT individual, IMO)!
In Buras 2-goal game, one of his goals was setup by one of the BEST passes of the season, by Connelly, if you recall.  Well, Bura was interviewed between periods, about the goal, by the NBC jerks,
and didn’t utter a single WORD, about anyone but HIMSELF!  He had a 2nd chance, in the postgame interview, with the interviewer even ACKNOWLEDGING the great pass from Connelly, and again, NOTHING, except talk about HIMSELF!  Bura even admits in the interview that he is “yelling” for the puck, all the time! He’s a head case, IMHO! Some get over themselves, and some don’t!  Bura is on thin ice! He’s got the talent, no doubt, but he doesn’t have enough production numbers, in the bank, to be cocky, and full of himself! Hope he can get out of his own head!

Am I wrong in wanting to throat-punch the lug wrench kid???

yes, it's his dad that deserves it for letting him drive the car and not teaching him

LOL guys
That damn commercial gets me too!
Another that kills me is that snot-ass kid, whose dad brings him a pizza. Dad is wearing a hat, that say“#1 Dad” on it.
The kid gets pissed because he wants a different pizza than what dad brought him, (either delivery or something), ANYWAY, that damn kid reaches up to his dads hat, and pulls off the “#1” lettering from dads hat!!! Leaving just the word “Dad”, on the hat!!! It was done like when a military guy gets stripes or a medal torn off his uniform!! Obvious message was that Dad got a “demotion”, from his little son, because the boy was upset that he was brought the wrong fuckin’ pizza!!! OH MY GOD!!  LMFAO, if it wasn’t so pathetic!!

Yep, looking like a head case. He looks confused to me. Wonder if he took a concussion? I imagine he's getting some trade talk within the team. Not sure what they could get back at this point but anythings is better than a sad sack.

Hell, I still go there for those things.  I have enough to do with keeping this going and doing the occasional GDT.  I appreciate all help if anyone wants to volunteer to do another section on here.   ;)

Couldn’t agree more with ya Mick!
I say get what we can for him, hoping that one of the teams hasn’t done all their homework!  He’s been given more than his fair share of sweet opportunities to prove himself.  He has some decent proven MOMENTS, but nothing in the consistency and team player categories to really speak of!

I think I might have mentioned before that I think Burro has a little Semin in him.......   phnaaaar! :P

Sasha had some issues, for sure and he had Ovi mentoring him.  Burro doesn't have that support, which is a shame.

Semin had waaaay more skill and he was let go because of his attitude, so I can't see Burt getting many more chances.  If he doesn't get it by now, I don't think he ever will.  He doesn't have the talent that Semin had and his attitude stinks.  He's not a TEAM player.
We see megastars like Ovi and Backstom being team first players and this runt just doesn't get it.

Unless he has a major epiphany very, very soon, I can't see him being here much longer.    I just hope we can get something decent for him in return.

On the flip side, I really, really like the way Eller and Willy have been playing recently.  Also SMelly.  Loved the way he stood up for Hooks last night and he hasn't been as much of a washout as I had expected.

It seems everyone has the same feelings about Burakovsky. He has easily been the biggest disappointment on the team. I could see the Caps trading him.
Another disappointment has been Oshie. He started off strong but has really struggled since his return from injury. His struggles haven't only been on the offensive side. Inconsistent play was a bit of a problem when he played for the Blues. Its the first time we have seen it from Oshie.
