Maybe when Niskanen is healthy again they have 2 decent D men, but Kempny does not look like last spring, Orpik is old, Orlov sucks balls, Bowey is too inconsistent, Siegenthaler is nothing and Djoos has been hurt since Nam.

The problems with the team right now are very obvious. The D is very suspect. We are able to hide that when the O is controlling the puck and playing much of the game in the other team's zone. In order to do that you need to have quality play from the center iceman. Right now, all 4 of our suck.
Backstrom -- is apparently scared of contact at this point. If you watch any puck that is 50-50 he loses the puck because he no longer will go in hard to the boards. My suspicion is that he is gun-shy from his own concussions and watching Oshie get a concussion every season. Whatever the reason, he is a great passer but he needs time and space and they won't give it because they want to hit him and he don't like that no more.
Kuzy -- has gotten paid and no longer seems to have the intensity he did when he was proving himself. MacLellan called him out on that. He looks confused most of the time and when he is he falls back to what he knows which is skating and stickhandling. He is absolutely killing us because he takes a whole line out of the game
Eller -- may have outplayed his ability last spring but he goes 100 miles an hour with no real thought or direction as to what he is doing. Look at his inability to score and you see a player that is just not getting it done at a level that is required. He is not making anybody better which is the job of a center. And, he gets thrown out of EVERY faceoff he takes.
Boyd -- Is fine but has one goal in the last 12 and is starting to over stickhandle in the Kuznetsov mode.
In order for this team to control games the way they need the center play has to get better. Plain and simple. There are wingers who can score but they need to be set up from the middle.

What is more worrisome is the last three games have shown Reidon and his system have been exposed and solved. This is gonna need to be fixed way more than just juggling the lines, and healthy scratches.
it is a very vanilla version of Trotzs “keep Monumental happy” system, (not the one that won in the playoffs and that shut us out the other night), the difference is the other sets, adjustments and in game descisions before it gets to the players to execute,fuck up, or ignore.
Rierdon's system is the same as Trotz's system. No difference whatsoever. The difference is in film, preparation, discipline, and buy in by the players. When things go badly they need a coach they believe in to be on the bench. They don't have that.

The total mystery of the combination of penalties that ended up in NO Caps power play is beyond me. They HAD a delayed penalty already called. Then Wilson gets involved with TWO guys and somehow their THREE penalties and our one guy turns up being even? WTF was that? Reirdon should have went berzerk and tossed the entire bench of sticks on the ice. They would not even give him an explanation. That is just wrong. Rierdon should have got himself tossed at that point instead of standing there looking puzzled (which I'm sure he was). GO berzerk - show some heat, heart, passion.....maybe it will trickle down to your team. (Maybe is probably too strong a word there)

richkrt99 - great post. For years, I have been screaming about the Caps not ever, ever, ever benching key players for poor performance. I just don't get it. If they don't want to embarrass one established star, then bench 2 or three of them at the same time. Right now, I would bench Backstrom, Oshie and Kuzy for the next game before the break. Then let them stew over the break and come back pissed off.
Don't forget the goaltenders! On top of the shit D and O, the goaltending has been suspect as well..I’d say more resigned, cynical, or apathetic before suspect.

Nisky, Orlov, Orpik, Carlson, and Bowey, ALL had MULTIPLE failures on clearing or bringing up the puck! Hell, even Kempny had a couple, and that’s one of his strengths! A lot of forwards also missing MULTIPLE, MULTIPLE, simple passes, by not being detailed!!
These are HUGE mistakes that lead to unnecessary, repeat CHANCES for opponents SOG’s!
In this case, even if the effort is better, it cannot compensate for THAT many breakdowns, I dont care if you play gritty and hustle the entire game!
Hustle and good effort can win games even with SOME poor execution, but the AMOUNT of the lack of execution in this game, would doom any team!! AND IT DID!
