RALEIGH, N.C. — The Washington Capitals might be without two of their best players in their Metropolitan Division matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday night. Defenseman Matt Niskanen is definitely out with an undisclosed “upper-body” injury, and he didn’t make the trip to Raleigh. Now top-line center Nicklas Backstrom may not play either, staying back at the team hotel for morning skate because he’s ill.
“I’m optimistic, but I don’t know until game time,” Coach Barry Trotz said of Backstrom’s availability. “He’ll be a game-time decision, but I’m optimistic.”
With Backstrom not on the ice for morning skate, forward Chandler Stephenson took his place centering wingers Alex Ovechkin and Devante Smith-Pelly on the top line. Stephenson has been playing left wing for the Capitals this season, but he’s played center in the American Hockey League, and he filled in for Backstrom as a center once before this season, when Backstrom was sick in Vancouver and couldn’t play.
[Rookie Djoos’s patience impresses his teammates (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capitals-insider/wp/2018/01/01/rookie-defenseman-christian-djooss-patience-has-quickly-impressed-his-capitals-teammates/)]
Stephenson has two goals and seven assists in 28 games played this season. If he does indeed get promoted to centering the top line, then forward Andre Burakovsky will draw back into the lineup and take Stephenson’s usual spot as the fourth-line left wing. Burakovsky practiced with the first power play with Backstrom absent from that unit this morning. Backstrom has eight goals and 23 assists this season.
“He’s played at a high level at center ice down in Hershey,” Trotz said of Stephenson. “He’s done that when he’s come up for us. It’s probably the least disruptive [to the rest of the lineup]. That might not necessarily be the lines if Backy was in. It was just very convenient today.”
Niskanen was out for 13 games earlier in the year with a thumb injury, and this ailment is seemingly unrelated to that one. Tuesday was a treatment day for Niskanen, so he didn’t skate back in Washington for a third straight day. The Capitals don’t play again until Sunday, so with him out on Tuesday night, he has roughly a week to heal.
[Slumping Burakovsky wants to strengthen his mental approach (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capitals-insider/wp/2017/12/31/andre-burakovsky-after-healthy-scratch-i-have-to-learn-to-get-more-mentally-strong/)]
The team is sitting in first place in the division with 51 points, but the Capitals have also played the most games, and Tuesday’s 41st game marks the halfway point of the season.
“Our mind-set has to be that we have to get the game tonight because we have a few days off,” Trotz said. “We’ll be practicing and working on our game, but when you get a chance to collect points, you’ve got to do that.”

FOR THE WRONG TEAM!
Another Johnny 714 Qualude moment!
-
yep, Norris contender
-
I still like the energy DSP brings, but I think he'd bring it better on line 2 or 3. Willy has proved he deserves to be on 1
-
yep, Norris contender
Lol there no way to defend that. That is the worst turnover of the year
-

I liked Wilson better on that first line.

Very tricky from 18 and 39!!!!!
-
That was a sweet goal. Wow!
-
Nice fucking play by Stephenson
-
Hello, My People ..... hell of a pass by Stephenson.
-
Hi guys! I hope you had a great holiday season.
-
Hello all.
Any reason why Burakovsky is out? On the trade block perhaps??

These new guys are proving to be quite the surprise for our team. So much talent! Putting a little pressure on the veterans I would think.

D S P !!!!!!!

2nd consecutive healthy scratch. Maybe he is on the trading block.
-
Hello all.
Any reason why Burakovsky is out? On the trade block perhaps??
First things first. Welcome to the Forum.
I would guess maybe because the alternatives are shooting the puck and having success. Maybe coach is giving him another timeout.
-
The only thing worse than hopping the Hens win is hopping Pilly wins tonight
-
Damn! Orpik appeared to pull up hard when he saw he turned his back to him. Weak call at best.
-
Hello all.

He sucks? lol Had high hopes for the kid but apparently he's a head case..
-
This game does have a weird feel to it. Stone Hands not only is on the 1st line, he's scored. I feel all funky - not only physically but also I'm on this little stay-cation and I have this feeling I should be getting ready for work. Chaisson has the other goal .... I mean, WTF??
-
The only thing worse than hopping the Hens win is hopping Pilly wins tonight
>:(
apparently I need to splain, if Pilly wins in regulation tonight the Hens will have sole position of last place in the Metro

Well, I hoped the kid would develop into the player we all thought he would be but now I hope he doesnt - that is, if he ends up with another team.

Isn't that a wonderful thought! ;D ;D ;D

Another cheap call. Kuzy barely touched him. We haven't seen
many any embellishment calls this year. There surely were some deserved embellishment calls.

I kind of agree with you. I had some hopes for the kid, esp. after the second half of last season and how the 3rd line jelled. But again, after his injury, its like he needed a total reset. As a professional hockey player, you can't keep having to do that. My big concern now is that we don't coddle the guy. Either set a deadline for a return to form, or trade the guy while he still has some worth.
-
I agree, and trade him while he still has upside. That should be for a few years maybe but I would like to see something valuable in return. Either that or, snap the F out of it bura!
-
The guys with the big paychecks really need to start producing /....
-

No kidding. I think they have to get Kuzy off the half wall on the pp.
-
The intermission radio guy just called DSP's goal secondary scoring. From the 1st line?

Kuzy reminds me of Semin, far too many stick penalty’s

Haven't seen him play any bongos though....

At least Semin would shoot the goddamn puck.
-
Fucking bs
-
FFS ... this is what happens when you keep demanding your lower lines carry more than share.
-
Well that was a quick self-destruct period.
-
GOOD teams don't do this shit. 3-1 up to 4-3 down. Can't fucking happen.
-
Well that was a quick self-destruct period.
Orpik put it in our net. Wow. I'd be pretty pissed if I was Holtby.
-
great collapse guys
-
Get it back PP
-
Carlson assists them on their first goal.
Chorney loses it right in front of the goal for their third goal.
Bowen and Orpik combine for their fourth goal.
This isn’t the "scoring from the D" that we need.

Who says we are a good team? We are a collection of really good players that only sometimes decide to play to their potential.
-
Typical Trotz unprepared team against a much weaker team. No power play and no pk. Orpik can just go along with gmbm

I can't disagree with you more. It is not Trotz's fault. It wasn't the previous coaches fault. This team historically has an absolute black hole when it comes to on-ice accountability. And who's role is that to enforce .... the captain. And how long has the black hole been around ................
-
Atta Boy Ovi!

Bowey had a bad turnover but Orpik has to give him some support. When Bowey is in the right corner Orpik can't stand 60 feet away. Orpik has done it to Bowey all year and he did it to Chorney last game. Boweys options were to try and force a pass or eat it. He chose to eat it. There really wasnt a good option for him.

-
Ummm
-
And while I question his leadership ability, I can't question Ovie's ability to score a goal.
-
this team is a joking puck in their own end
-
Looks like Orlov didn’t want to be left out of the Caps D-men setting up the Hurricanes. I think the only one who hasn’t contributed to the Canes cause is Chorney.
-
that is a phukin horse shit call
-

Chorney coughed up the puck on the 3 rd goal
-
You’re right - what was I thinking - they’ve all helped the Canes out.
-
Lots of weak calls against the Caps this game.

No kidding

Cap'n GR8 does it again in OT!

holy flirking schnit!!!!!

You know I was just going to say Ovi was pissing me off. Refused to cycle the puck and tries to do everything himself then the fucker scores the game winner

GWG!!

Exactly - the Canes ring the pipe because of Ovie’s Half-as defense, pisses me off, then he goes and does that!
-
Both teams played fairly sloppy games. We kept giving the puck away in our end. Carolina zone coverage sucked and Ward had a bad game. Holtby played decent for us. Wish the team played better in front of him.
-
On the first Car goal Carlson looked so careless.
-
Hey Everybody!!
Watched game on new Christmas TV, but our new puppy prevented ANY chance of GDT participation!
Caps are finding different ways to win, (and lose sometimes), AND doing it in a variety of different game situations! THIS seems to be starting the emergence of a DIFFERENT identity to our TEAM!! Yes it's early, and a lot of the "caps culture" crap is still being seen, BUT, some of it is also FALLING AWAY, giving rise to a different "feel", to many, (not all), of these wins! Ovi slacks in some games, BUT is showing a willingness, way more often than last year, to "TURN IT ON"!! Something I didn't expect to see this year from him, at all!
OK Maaco! Are you sitting down, buddy? LOL! I saw Carlson show some GOOD hustle tonite, and play some quite above average DEFENSE, with minimal lazy mistakes, if any!! Made some good passes on PP, as well! I'm actually happy for the guy, and our team!! He LOOKED different by the eye test, to me, IMO! More alive!! (Maybe the typical Holiday weed drought, that occurs annually in the US, had something to do with it)!!LOL. All kidding aside, props to #74 tonite! (And NO, Maaco, I'm not drunk, my friend)!

Hey Raven, good to see ya!
I did see that Car. goal, and agree with you re Carly! But I just posted positive on his overall play tonite, while you were posting! LOL. Thought he had a decent game otherwise. He had a blocked shot near the end of regulation that was a GREAT EFFORT!! I had to wipe my eyes, and double check that it was him. Not for the block, as that is one of his forte's, WITH HIS STICK, usually! This one was rare for him, as he showed good situational awareness, some hustle, and a willingness to lay on the ice and sac the body! Once I confirmed it was Carlson, I had to give him props!
Good to see you here!

Hi Rush, thanks! I'm also glad to see all of you. At some point I thought that it was an exodus after playoffs disappointments, but then a kind soul gave me a link here!:)
You are probably right, I just watched scored goals, too busy at work (the West coast, games are started too early here).
DC once wrote that Carlson just plays too many minutes and make such kind of mistakes because too tired. Yes he makes a lot good plays, and these sloppy plays looks even worst, on a contrast.
-
Sorry I missed the GDT, looks like I missed a good one

well, see you all in 4 days. The schedule this month is horrid

That was a brutal blunder. You take that play away and Carlson actually played a good game. Bowey, Orpik and Chorney not so good.
-

Well we won but it was ugly. Very bad turnovers cost us 3 goals. Even the pp goal we gave up was a weak play. Beagle was down too low and gave Rask too much space in the slot. To make matters worse I think Beagle screened Holtby on the play.

You must be talking about 4caps. He seems to be the only guy there. I still keep in contact with him a bit via PM.

understandable,
And while Beagle should not be immune to criticism, I think to much is asked of him. While few players in the NHL can take on/accept the responsibility he has, with the others he’s with, bad moments are magnified far more than what he he does that gets unnoticed. Because as we know, the best defense is what goes unnoticed,
He certainly belongs in a class with Draper and Madden, but neither of them had the weight, or the substandard Dcorps Beagle has.
-
Beagle has struggled a bit this year. A lot of that because of the situations he plays in. He has been very good on faceoffs again. Is defensive play and penalty killing has been a bit off this year. Our pk as a unit has been off.
-
I agree Beagle seems to have lost a step and some energy. Although he is actually playing well for a 4th liner, I had hoped he would be deserving of the 3rd, or even 2nd line.
-

I think he is more suited as a 4th line player. Your typical hard working checker.

He isnt the problem, it’s that our “entertainment first” system flat out sucks.
As I said before, he has to do more than any center on the team.
Imagine if Suzy and Helen Keller had to do Beagles role. . . we’d probably be competing with Buffalo for the worst record in the league if those two had to defend anything.
Beagle went from having Willie and Witoswki to having what ever GMBetaMale mistake throws out and and makes Beagle look like a rec league equipment manager . . .
Beagles “short comings”, are not on him,it’s on the wussy roster our incompetent “GM” has paraded out there to sell VIP tickets
-
I dont think anyone is blaming Beagle for anything. You mentioned Eller in your post. He actually hasn't played terrible. A bit streaky offensively but he has been pretty good defensively. And he works hard.
