For NHL players who played Canada’s junior hockey circuit, Friday’s bus crash ‘hits home’

Chandler Stephenson grew up near where the Humboldt Broncos, whose bus crashed Saturday, were based. (Rob Carr/Getty Images)

Before he signed with the Washington Capitals and began to enjoy the glamour of the NHL, Chandler Stephenson was a typical Canadian hockey prospect who created his best memories in two places: on the ice and on the bus, which would ferry Stephenson and his junior league teammates from town to town in Saskatchewan so they could chase their dreams.

“It’s kind of your second home,” a somber Stephenson said in the Capitals’ locker room Saturday morning, less than 12 hours after he found out that a bus carrying a junior hockey league team in Canada had crashed, killing at least 14 people.

The team, the Humboldt Broncos, are based about an hour from Stephenson’s hometown of Saskatoon; he was acquainted with three of the players. He wasn’t sure of their condition, but Stephenson said one of the players had to be airlifted from the scene with a fractured skull.

“Kind of at a loss for words. Couldn’t really believe that something like that could happen. You’re on the bus for hours,” Stephenson said.

[ ‘A grieving province’ mourns after 14 killed in Canadian junior hockey team bus crash  (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2018/04/07/at-least-14-dead-in-canadian-junior-hockey-team-bus-crash-reports-say/?utm_term=.ca97b70ee5a7)]

Washington’s players were still trying to process Friday night’s accident as they returned to practice Saturday morning. Preparations for that night’s regular season finale against New Jersey were an afterthought during the session. Scores of players reflected on their roots, including Stephenson, Brett Connolly and Braden Holtby, all of whom played junior league hockey close to Humboldt.

Capitals Coach Barry Trotz, who himself had played junior league hockey in Saskatchewan decades ago, opened his meeting with reporters by not addressing his own roster or the impending payoff push, but rather the tragedy that has rocked Canada and the NHL, which is made up of a majority of Canadian players

“The players come from all over, especially in Canada … they’re from all over Western Canada. They come and play in a small town, and you’re embraced by a small town, and you’re the pride of a small town, and you’re chasing a dream,” Trotz said. “It does hit a little bit home.”

Details from the crash were still emerging as Washington’s players prepared for Saturday’s practice. Connolly tweeted for the first time since January, sending out his condolences to a community that is about 20 hours from his hometown in northern British Columbia.

Connolly wondered what had happened and how safe he used to feel on buses while traveling in his junior hockey league days with the Prince George Cougars. The road conditions were often ugly and the glare of the sun on Western Canada’s plains could be treacherous for drivers, yet Connolly and his teammates never thought anything could happen; they instead bonded over card games, movies and music while they traveled hours from town to town.

“It hits home for a lot of guys … part of everybody’s junior career, you’re on a bus a lot. That’s kind of your safe spot,” said Connolly, who played junior league hockey in Saskatchewan. “That’s where you grow friendships. It’s crazy. It doesn’t make any sense how that can happen.”

Stephenson tuned into a Canadian radio station to listen to Humboldt’s mayor address the community of 5,869 Friday night, where citizens were invited to the rink and to church to grieve together. A number of Stephenson’s close friends are from his junior league hockey days, he said, relationships that were strengthened by travel and community support. He couldn’t fathom the loss.

“Especially a place like Humboldt. It’s just a city. To be qualified as a city, I think it’s five or ten thousand people,” he said. “The Broncos were their everything.”

Sad news about the Humboldt team.
At least the survivors didn't get stranded in Saskatchewan and have to eat their team mates bodies to live.

Very tragic. This the 2nd time a bus carrying a hockey team had a fatal accident in Saskarchewan. In 1986 4 members of the Swift current Broncos were killed. The Broncos name should be banned from Saskatchewan sports.

How did Niskanen get called for that? It was pure diving embellishment all the way.

At least they both got nicked, but it has to be one or the other IMO.

The embellishment rule needs fixing. Number 1, it needs to be enforced more, but if it's called then there should be no matching minors. If one guy dives then the other guy obviously didn't commit a foul

Sorry to hear of the bus accident.. I'm not familiar at all with the terrain of Saskatch.. How does a bus crash kill 14 people? Was it hit by a train or fall off a cliff? Can't get my head around it.. Prayers to all involved..

Post by: ArJunaZ on Saturday April 07, 2018, 07:40:17 PM Eastern

By the way, I bought the domain name WashingtonCapitalsFanForum.com and also bought domain parking about an hour ago.  I hope to have the site working under the new domain name by the start of the playoffs.

I'll take the site down for a while over the next couple days to make the transition.  i will also setup an automatic redirect for those going to the site under this domain name/folder.

The number of deaths is now 15. The total was so high because it collided with an 18 wheeler. The terrain here in Saskatchewan is flat. Its the prairies. There is some wooded areas in that part of the province but that shouldn't cause any problems. Weather may have played a factor or possibly icy road conditions.

Mights on Ice is always the 1st intermission... and it's highly entertaining because of the heard mentality at that age, it's just one big mass that follows the puck around the rink

When is the  :poop: NHL :poop: going to fix the stupid playoff format?
The way things worked the format doesn't look as bad this year. If they insist on divisions I'd prefer if the division winners get seeded 1 and 2 and then 6 wildcards in each conference.

I hope the Caps slipped out and changed to fresh jerseys and a fresh undershirt so the fans don't get stinky signed jerseys they can't wash.

It worked out better this year, but it's still senseless most years.

Probably 1 more year where the best teams play each other in the 2nd round.. Or, right about the time the Caps start to really suck again, so it won't matter.. Needs to be the east vs the west though and IMO the top 8 teams make it, period.. 1 plays 8 and so on.

Oh, congrats on the domain name!!

The Devils refused to pull there goalie when they had the opportunity even though it is the normal thing to do down 1 or 2 goals. They really didn't want Ovi to get to 50

The Caps spent most of the last 3 minutes of the game on the NJ side of center ice.  The Devils never really had a chance to pull their goalie.  Anyway, by the end of the game Ovie was so gassed he could hardly skate or swing his stick anyway.  He had his chance on the breakaway, and couldn't convert.

They had possession in the Caps end with about 1 min and 30 secs left but didn't pull the goalie. After that the Caps had control in the Devils end.

You answer your own comment, Maaco.  There was one instant where NJ had territory, but it didn't last long. Regardless, my concern is NOT about NJ's tactics, but the Capitals'.

This game, in a certain way, may have been a disaster for the Caps.  It was absolutely FOOLISH of them to have Ovie out on the ice for most of the last 7 minutes of this game, trying to get that 50th goal.  I could see this coming from the very beginning -- when Ovie scored early, I turned to my wife and said "oh oh, now they're going  to overwork him and try to feed him to get the hat trick."  And that is exactly what happened.

The human body has thresholds, and after they are crossed you can have all the good intentions and effort in the world, but your body simply will not respond in the same way as it did before you crossed it.  It's true both physically and mentally, and it is true in virtually all sports.  In hockey specifically, there are thresholds at all stages of competition.  If a shift is too long you can't respond well at the end of it.  Too much exposure in a game and you can't respond in the same ways you did earlier.  After too much cumulative wear and tear in a season, players wear out and their production suffers.  And we all know the "lost a step" threshold that virtually all players cross in the latter stages of their careers.

You could ask the fans around me last night -- all during the game, I was shouting at the team and Ovie to get him off the ice.  That breakaway he had in the 3rd period was his chance to get #50.  After he didn't convert, I just watched in horror as NJ took penalties and he/the coaches refused to get him off the ice.

This to me may have been a defining franchise moment, and the player and the team failed.  Do not be at all surprised if one of the defining commentaries during these playoffs is that Ovie is invisible, or just doesn't have it.  A 32-year-old abusing himself/being abused in this way risks crossing the "seasonal threshold" of endurance.  The pursuit of the personal goal in this case may have risked the golden goose scoring asset that this franchise has for the next couple of months.

I hope I'm wrong, and Ovie can help carry the team offensively during the playoffs.  But that game last night unnecessarily put that at risk.

How do you figure my post is bs? Carlson has shown potential over the years of being a very good dman but he hasn't shown consistency until this season. And like with so many other players he has a career year when his contract ius going expire. So he will get a big raise but is he going to be able to repeat this season. It happens so often. It happened with Oshie last season.
If we do sign him I hope he can repeat this for a few more years. If we don't keep him then it doesn't really matter if he does shit the bed.
BTW Alta I'm tired if your BS.

If Ovi had already reached 50 I'm sure he would have been rested. They rested him a couple years ago when he reached 50.
I'm OK with not resting too many players. I might have rested a couple more players.

Ovi only played 21minutes which is about his average this year.  He has played more than that in many games this season.   I am not worried about Ovi being overused, Caps don’t play until Thursday so he will have plenty of time to rest.

I’d of loved to heard the call/conversation and/or read the email or texts from Teddy, Dickless, that contained the orders for this to be top priority.

Sorry, we don’t have the playoff resume to chasing stats in game 82.

If 50 was so important, maybe they shouldn’t have taken shifts off. uses the same playbook for the past 19years, or not done turnover-drag after turnover-drag all season, so you don’t have to play the exact opposite of playoff hockey the last game of the season

the bigger issue with this core squad, you can clearly see the difference in play when they are chasing a goal they truly want....

Difference is, when they're chasing these personal goals, in the regular season, the other team really doesn't have much skin in the game.. But I get wht your sayin.. You can see they really want it.. It's when they get punched back, that they give up and back down.  :(

Your inference that the Cap players care more about personal goals than winning the Stanley Cup is total nonsense and is offensive.  That is the most ridiculous statement that I have read on this forum and there have been many.
