Capitals re-sign center Lars Eller to five-year, $17.5 million deal
(https://img.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src=https://img.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_960w/2010-2019/Wires/Images/2016-11-08/AP/Panthers_Capitals_Hockey-0e31e.jpg&w=1484)
Capitals center Lars Eller will be in Washington for five more years. (Nick Wass/Associated Press)
As the Washington Capitals wrapped up practice, Coach Barry Trotz tapped center Lars Eller on the back of the leg and delivered some news to the team. The sound of hooting and sticks smacking the ice filled the rink. Gloves began patting Eller on the head, and Andre Burakovsky happily embraced him. With a new five-year, $17.5 million contract inked Saturday, Eller cemented what’s he’s felt for a while now: This is home.
“He’s said that to me a few times,” Trotz said.
The 28-year-old third-line center was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and the new deal extends his current $3.5 million cap hit for five more seasons. Eller’s deal does not include no-trade or no-move protections, according to a source. Eller still has never gotten an opportunity to test the open market, and because middle-six centers are such a commodity, it’s possible Eller would have fetched a better deal in free agency than the one he signed with Washington.
“I’m only going to have one time to be an [unrestricted free agent] when I’m still in my 20s and that’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, but looking at the options, I wanted to stay here,” Eller said. “ . . . You could possibly get a better deal, but you don’t know where, what kind of team. There’s a risk and reward. You had to make some decisions, but I made the decision that I wanted to be here.”
Staying with the Capitals offered Eller a certain security that’s helped put him on pace for a career year, with 11 goals and 17 assists through 53 games. During his six seasons in Montreal, Eller bounced around the lineup, playing wing and center, top-six and bottom-six. That ended with the Canadiens trading Eller to Washington before the 2016-17 season, and Eller has centered the third line with the Capitals from the first game he put on the uniform.
The new deal also gives the Capitals some stability going forward. The team’s top three centers — Nicklas Bäckström , Evgeny Kuznetsov and Eller — are now signed through the 2019-20 season. Fourth-line center Jay Beagle is a pending unrestricted free agent.
“It’s huge,” General Manager Brian MacLellan said. “If you get four good centermen, it’s a strength of a team. That’s how you build your depth in your lineup.”
Said Trotz: “Everybody in the league is dying for centermen. And we have a lot of them. . . . I think every good team, it doesn’t matter what sport, if you’re strong up the middle, you’ve got a chance. We’re strong at the center position and we’re strong at goal, and if you give us a year or two to get some young guys coming in at defense, that’ll be a strength for us as well. I think we’re in a good position.”
The consistency at center has helped Washington overcome the off season departures of two top-six forwards, and the team is once again atop the Metropolitan Division. Eller’s best asset is puck possession, and his line with forward Brett Connolly has been arguably the Capitals’ most dependable.
In-season contract extensions have been a rarity during MacLellan’s four-season tenure, but with the salary cap projected to rise to $79 million for next season and the trade deadline looming at the end of the month, MacLellan saw an opportunity to strike one item off his to-do list early. Defenseman John Carlson is now the team’s main free agent priority, as the 28-year-old right-shot is expected to command a hefty raise from his current $3.96 million cap hit.
“I’m not going to comment on negotiations, but we’re going to do everything we can to bring him back, yeah,” MacLellan said. “We’ve had talks with his people.”
The Capitals are hopeful that Carlson will also value the comfort of staying in Washington over the allure of testing free agency. In making his decision, Eller wanted to continue to play for a competitive team, and he expects the Capitals to stay that way with the team’s star players all signed for multiple seasons. He has relished learning from Bäckström and Kuznetsov, and along with his penalty kill responsibilities, Eller’s gotten more power-play opportunities this season.
As he took a seat at his dressing room stall on Saturday, his teammates continued to hoot and congratulate him on the new contract.
“You know, the house next to mine is on sale,” forward T.J. Oshie said.
“Where are you buying dinner tonight?” Bäckström called out from across the room.
“I’m really happy to be standing here today,” Eller said. “This club and this city has been a great fit for me personally, for my family. There’s just so many things that have been good about it. It’s been good for my career. I’ve found my game here, especially this year. I couldn’t be happier to make this happen.”

Not sure if you noticed but the title of the thread says Devils at Caps. Have you been drinking already?
-
Red Wings are coming off an epic collapse, I'd imagine they have something to prove today
-
Can't say I'm thrilled about Burakovsky being in the lineup. I guess he needs some playing time. He needs to get his head out of his ass and start playing hockey. Then maybe we can trade him for a couple rolls if tape. This is a guy we should have traded long ago.
-
Burokovsky has definitely been a disappointment, but still provides more upside than Chaisson. He actually played well for us in the playoffs and has had some runs where he was really good. Hopefully he can find that again and be a significant factor.
I'll be interested to watch Eller the rest of the year. I think he has really started to gain confidence and that has been helping his game. When he gets aggressive, he is a threat. Bet he scores today.
-
What upside? He has no hockey IQ. He shows some skill once every dozen games or so. So what. Chaisson is a better player than Burakovsky

Yikes! That's pretty bad getting it half right and half a different division. I was up all night and did that after a rough long day. Another friend died. His funeral was yesterday. Pancreatic cancer took him from his family far too early. He was my age. Like all the others he seemed to be doing well and in remission. It was not in the pancreas, but right up against it, so they could not operate. I just talked to him two weeks ago and he was positive he was doing well. He was a man with a huge heart of gold.
I don't drink BTW.
-
Does that mean no jokes about drinking?

Talking about drinking, how about that cameraman running the isolation camera on Ovie? Missed the goal.

I'm sorry to hear that too. My condolences. Cancer is sure a nasty.

Woooooooo Ovi from Carlson
-
Hey ArJuna hope you dont mind if I have a drink.
-
Wings Caps games are always bitter sweet and I hope for OT.
This one has potential to be very interesting. The word from Motown is the players have said, (paraphrased) were better then our record and we’re making a run for it”, which while difficult at 10 pts out in Feb, is not impossible nor far fetched.
It will be fun to see if it’s a step up and play down, or if the other says “well there in first place and it’s only Feb”
-
Hey ArJuna hope you dont mind if I have a drink.
I don’t ;D
-
Sorry to heat that AJ. :-(
Thanks Lil. He was my mechanic before we became friends. The most honest mechanic I've ever known. He would not cheat anyone and all his customers wouldn't trust anyone else. He's the only guy that's ever worked on our cars, which is why they are in such great shape. He has two kids in college. Their still so young.
So many of my best friends gone in the last few years. Life is so damn short already. It's not right.
-

Do you practice at being an ass, or does it just come naturally? :raspberry:
-
I would like to see Niskanan suck a little less, and someone who can win a fucking faceoff
-

No practice needed. I've got plenty if experience.
-
I would like to see Niskanan suck a little less, and someone who can win a fucking faceoff
This why I dislike Niskanen so much. He makes plays like that quite often and for some reason most people here give him a free pass. If Carlson did that, the fans would be asking for the death penalty
-

Ya know, I’m half curious as why he didn’t go after him and risk a penalty shot
Abby’s a bad ass and all, but the chances of him beating Holts would have to be less on a penalty shot as opposed to a short breakaway
-
Caps are offside.
-
Nota great first.

A big part of it is Niskanen going from great to what ever he is pretty damn quick.
Which begs the question is he not 100% or even 80% healthy, or has he gotten so frustrated and overtasked that he has mentality checked out, and just doesnt care much anymore.
Hard to say for sure, but . . .that PK last game was the Niskanen that we expect and NEED.
-

I would definitely interfered with him or held him up

And to this point, May just pointed out the shitty pass Connolly made before what started Abby’s goal . . .

I dont know but every game Orlov has to bail out Niskanen. Several times in some games. Last game Nisky got caught on a stupid pinch that he had no chance on and gave up a partial breakaway but Orlov was able to get over and make a great defensive play. Orlov is light years ahead of Niskanen. He is even playing better than him defensively.
-

Exactly! We have one of the best goalies in the world. And why I don’t have the data I’m front of me, him stopping a penalty shot over a quick rush from a nondangler, would certainly be in our favor
-
And to this point, May just pointed out the shitty pass Connolly made before what started Abby’s goal . . .
Ya it was Connolly from the left boards with the shitty pass. Connolly is pretty much a slot player. He sucks everywhere else on the ice. He made a bad pass to no one in our end too.

sorry to hear, I hope you're handling it well.
On a side note, the reason I got out of a garage and went to work on a company fleet was the public treating me like my only intent was to rip them off.

I'm so glad we have the perfect defenseman in Carlson, who never needs bailing out.

Niskanen and Oshie battling for biggest disappointment on the team, with Burka right in the mix.
-
How did Carlson get in this conversation? Now that he is though he has needed to be bailed out at times but there has been no one there to bail him out. Carlson gets paired with Djoos or Orpik. They dont really bail anyone out.
-
nice save
-
This team has to learn how to play ALL the time if it wants to succeed in the playoffs. Coming out like this against Detroit is piss poor. Giving up 90% of the possession. Not acceptable.

We are out of sync in this period. Happens too often

We come out with low energy and lose EVERY 50-50 Puck. That gets us penned in our end with the long shift. It’s about effort.
-
2 shots in 12 minutes. Seriously?
-
sorry to hear, I hope you're handling it well.
On a side note, the reason I got out of a garage and went to work on a company fleet was the public treating me like my only intent was to rip them off.
I'm fine.
When I heard he had passed I felt him stop by and let me know he is alright. He was a very powerful presence when this happened. I get this a lot when people close to me pass, with the exception of when my Mom passed. I never felt her come by even once. On that note I used to get overrun by these experiences often when I lived on top of the hill behind Arlington National Cemetery. Some nights hundreds of these "spirits" would rush through my apartment and make the hair on my body stand on end and they would completely freak out my Macaw who could actually see them. I could tell you some wild stories about this shit.
In my experience there are a lot of bad apples in the mechanic business and so people are very wary. I've caught better than half the ones I ever dealt with cheating and lying big time. The big franchises are the worst in my opinion. My friend Marty just had so much integrity that his customers totally trusted him. I remember once early on I thought for sure I was looking at a huge repair bill and he said it was just a tiny thing and charged me $25. This happened a lot. When I got sick he helped me save money by letting me bring in my own parts, which I could often get for less than he could. He passed on that ethic to his crew, who now run the shop even though it is still owned by his family.
-
I think embellishment ruins the sport. These fakers :poop: should be fined and suspended for that crap.
-

Agreed. But we deserve what we get. No heart this period.
-
Just fucking awful. Pittsburgh coming into form and Caps are not getting any better. Another early spring. Fuck this team.
-
Again, this team is not up for a game against a much weaker team. We will lose this game since we give up back to back goals because these losers like Niskanan don't play
-
Niskanen sucks. We worried about Orpik’s contract but we are fucked with 2’s contract.
-
My technology doesn't seem to want to let me watch any more....
Not surprising really, considering how :poop: we're playing.

Who the fuck are Locker and JoeB taking about. Calling Niskanen dependable. He’s been awful all year since his injury.
-
it appears Grubs is playing the 3rd
-
Now \i know why. Just back to the game.....
:O= 4 - 1.
YUK!
-

We can hope.
-
I may switch over to Olympics. This is too difficult to watch.
-

I wouldn't want to play in front of this sorry-assed group of losing motherfuckers. To give up 3 straight goals to a lowly team like Detroit is pathetic. 10 shots in 2 periods at home? What a fucking joke this team is. Every year it's the same crap. They get all excited with themselves like they've done something by beating the fucking Jackets twice in a week. So, then it's just like every other year. We play bad hockey and start our slide into spring so that by the time we get wiped out in the first or second round of the playoffs it's not a surprise. It's so fucking sad that we are all doing this to ourselves all over again. After last year's flame out I said I wouldn't and yet, here I am again. I complain about the Caps but the reality is that I'M JUST FUCKING PATHETIC that this is how I elect to spend my free time.
I am a Caps fan. By definition I am self-loathing.
-
This team needs to dump Trotz.
Unfortunately, he is too nice, as the Capitals players, other than the rookies, are not listening to him. Bring in an asshole like Keenan or Sutter.. Sorry Trotz, you're just not a winner
-
I may switch over to Olympics. This is too difficult to watch.
The Olympics are REALLY hard to watch. I think an old Law and Order rerun is my next hour.
Better than this horrible display.
-
Ya know. , I’ll have to go back and rewatch to be certain, but this right know come Bash destroying Trotz. and Bashers players executing the game plan.
The causes for mistakes of that magnitude being made, and then in that succession simply HAS to be attributed to the forcing them, and generating confusion to cause even more.
But if it’s not that, . . . There some MAJOR issues that are being dismissed, covered up, denied and ignored.
-
You guys have said it all. Its our terrible defensive zone coverage and turn over that have killed us all year. People complain we dont get enough shots. Well that all starts in the defensive zone. We are hemmed in our zone too long.
Niskanen has been downright awful in this game. Orpik sucks too.
-
Have to bench Niskanen next game. Trotz only uses benching son rookies and 4th liners. He never wants to upset the hiarchy.
That was one of the worst periods I have ever seen us play.
-
Caps just need moar puck moving defensemen...
-
:10z:

Conno!!!!

The shitty thing is there are so many who think the “skill talent and stars” are enough to win a cup, and all we need is a chance. . .
More fans need to get pissed off and challenge that this team is as good as they want to believe
-
Caps just need moar puck moving defensemen...
If only we had Mike Green. . .
A Shattenkrap may be available too!!
-
And if we come back and win we praise the work ethic and ability to fight and come back? Or, do we look at how the fuck we could play a second period like that and try to figure out how to fix this crap before we (hopefully) make the playoffs?
-
YAY! We got one! ;D
-
Add Backstrom to the list of under-performers this year. I’d say three out of four games he has played average at best.
-

It takes a lot more than skilled players to win. The role players are very important.

The Caps need a shutdown dman and a good 2 way forward. We already have puck moving dmen that suck defensively

Agreed. He HAS to score there. Open net.

horseshit call

Backstrom and Oshie have under achieved but that isn't our Achilles heel.
-
I am hoping for a 6-2 loss, rather than a 5-4 win. This team needs to understand they can’t keep pulling this crap. Practice tomorrow should be nothing but gassers until guys are throwing up. Then Trotz needs to quit doing his eyebrow raises and unload on these guys and bench some veterans. He needs to publicly embarrass some guys.

Spot on, Beaglefan.

Hehehehe yep, while that was a 100% sarcasm. I would not be surprised if one or both ended up here at the deadline.
Given what appear to be the priorities, competence, and trends of the front office. I wouldn’t be shocked one bit if they gave at least Wilson, Stephenson, two 1sts and started another “this is the year” marketing campaign . . .

:9z:

Orley!!!!!

4th line playing well. Actually caring. What an idea!

I would bet, that behind closed doors with his coaches, he probably does.
But, as soon as he makes it public, he’d probably be canned shortly after

Unlucky Beages....

Nice shift by Willy

Beagles crew does at least 95% if not more
-
How was there not a penalty on the Wings when a player grabbed Wilson from the bench?
-
pull the goalie !!!!!!
-
pull the goalie !!!!!!
We suck at that. Almost guaranteed to give up an ENG.

could be a two man pp

Damn right!!!
As we’ve seen, you can’t win play of series if you’re down 3 goals every game

LOL. Too funny.

:19z:
:pp:
-

-
this team doesn't deserve a point, but Hens won today so they need it
-
I have started to watch from the third period! Not bad!
-
I bet next goal wins it

This may be the worst game I ever witnessed.
Both my teams play so SHITTY they end up goin to OT.
This comes down to who wants to give it away more
-
FUCK 65. Fire his ass!
-
nice
-
Burka still can't shoot the fucking puck. IDIOT!!!!
-
FUCK 65. Fire his ass!
Oshie had 2 on 1 early in the OT and fucked it up... as usual.
They got a point they didn't deserve and then lost like they deserved. Nobody will remember how FUCKING AWFUL they played in the second period. If they play even bad hockey -- instead of atrocious hockey -- they win easily.
They are not professional day in and day out. That is the problem. And that shit catches up with you in April. I supposed it would in May as well but we NEVER get there.
-
Well, loosing 1:4, and getting a point is odd already.
-
Thank the Gods that's over with!
That was frightfull.
Getting a point was more than we deserved.
-
Well. . . At least we didn’t have to watch a shoot out!
Now I can enjoy my T-bone steak chilli!! (HT had Tbones for 4 something an lb!!)
-

He gave some demo of his skills. but a goal wasn't part of it!
-
Glad we lost. Hate that we got a point and I can only imagine Trotz telling those guys “way to come back boys”.
I don’t mind if they lose 7-0, as long as they give a real effort and act like they care. I absolutely hated, hated, hated this game. It was a complete failure, from the front office, to the coaching to the players. Bunch of losers - in every way.

The Caps prefer the terms “hot goalie” or “puck luck”

Back to watching the 'Lympics for me. At least peeps there want to compete.

Yes, DC! Enjoy it! You seem to know how to do it!:)

This was a pathetic game. Sloppy play by both teams.

Lmao. You really have no clue. I guarantee Trotz will be pissed about this game. I think it's time for Holtby to lose his shit. He got hung out to dry again.
You guys that continually shit on Carlson. You should be changing your whipping boy to Niskanen. He has been downright awful. Carlson has been by far our best dman. Another note. Boweys game is steadily improving. I think he may have surpassed Djoos.
-
That was one of the worst games I've ever seen our team play, and, let's face it, we've had a few.
-
First of all, I like Trotz and he shouldn’t be blamed when his players miss passes or shots. He is responsible for making sure they are ready and motivated to play. I have been disappointed with that aspect and he does not seem willing to be tough on this team.
If he doesn’t bench Niskanen for the next game, I am done with Trotz. Chorney deserves to be playing more anyway. It is such an obvious and needed move.

I only :poop: on Dylan when he deserves it, or for historical references and jokes and gibes... ;) , but you are right, he has played much better recently and as you say, Nisky has not. :-(
Imho, Juicy Lucy has never been much to shout about.
Jus' sayin'
-
Well, it was mean and it really hurt my feelings. I’m not sure I can rebound from that.

I don’t have a clue? Really?
Yep, those of us that don't see that Carlson is an obvious HOF candidate are all clueless ;)

-
I don’t have a clue? Really?
I mean about Trotzs reaction. I'm pretty sure Trotz will be pissed because they aren't playing his kind of hockey at all.

Hey this has nothing to do with Carlson. I can tell you Carlson is far from our biggest problem.

I dont know what is going on with Niskanen. I cant see benching him. All I know is we need to fix our dcore.

wow, an entire GDT were no one "shit" on Carlson, yet we continually do so ::)
I'm beginning to suspect there is a lot of lead in the water in Regina.

Well. . . In all fairness, if a Dman goes unnoticed, more often than not it’s a good game
On the other hand, if everyone else just fucked up and stunk worse . . .
But yeah, Carlson didn’t make any glaring “Dylan-esque” (que Stuck In The Middle With You), goal giving mistakes that game
(“Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right, here I am, . .”
Now if someone did a hybrid Carlson highlight/blooper video set to that song, they’d never pay for their own drink as long as I’m there , but. Anyone who got the refences wouldn’t pay for much with me around anyway )

Oh, I’m sure Trotz will be pissed - it’s what he does about it that matters. It’s one thing to stick with a guy that is in a slump, but Nisky has been making dumb decisions all year long. Nisky is an established veteran, and giving him a game or two in the press box sends a strong message to the team, and I think would light a fire under him. Chorney needs to get some playing time anyway in case someone gets hurt.
-
Did you guys hear Trotz didn't address the team at 2nd intermission. It was Holtby who did? Not sure if true, it's just what I read. I thought he should of called a time out sometime in the 2nd and lost his shit completely, but he's better at the "I'll be quiet, I'm disappointed" method. Which has proven to be an exceptional motivator/fixer, over his 4 years here. lol

The water here is good. The problem may have been the dozen beer I drank during the game.
