Division-leading Vegas Golden Knights bring their party to Washington

Capitals forward Jakub Vrana has just one point in 2018. (Nick Wass/AP)
When the Vegas Golden Knights chose Nate Schmidt as their expansion draft selection frum the Washington Capitals in June Coach Barry Trotz gave the defenseman a call.
Trotz, the Nashville Predators first coach when they began play as an expansion franchise in 1998, wanted to give the player a sense of what a unique, groundbreaking time it was.
"You're going to be part of something very special," Trotz told Schmidt. "Its the only time probably in your career ... that you are the first. And what you do, what stamp you put on that city or that group, that will be a bond forever."
Fast forward to 2018, and the Golden Knights, headed by former Capitals general manager George McPhee, are one of the top teams in the NHL, far exceeding expectations for an expansion team. They are putting their own stamp on the city of Las Vegas — and the league — as they have already set the record for wins for an expansion team with 34, surpassing the mark set by both the Anaheim Ducks and Florida Panthers in the 1993-94 season.
"They are living the dream right now," Trotz said Thursday. "They are [second in] the NHL as an ‘expansion team, as you would say. If you were a true expansion team you wouldn't be on the top of the pile. You would be at the bottom of the pile."
Capitals fans might remember the bottom of the pile. Washington finished its 1974-75 expansion season 8-67-5, the worst NHL season to date. The Golden Knights matched that win total after just three weeks.
The Pacific Division-leading Golden Knights come to Washington on Sunday for a matinee against the Metropolitan Division-leading Capitals at Capital One Arena. After a 5-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Friday, Vegas (34-13-4) sat just one point behind the Tampa Bay Lightning, which played late Saturday night, in the race for the Presidents Trophy, which goes to NHL's best regular season team.
"Its gone really well for them," Capitals winger Brett Connolly said. "Every organization, they are going to go through some tough times, but they really havent had that yet, so I think this year they are just going to ride it right into the playoffs and then once you get in you never know. They definitely got a lot of good pieces, and if they do it right, they have a lot of draft picks that can really set themselves up for success."
Vegas beat the Capitals in their first meeting, 3-0, in December at the Golden Knights gleaming new T-Mobile Arena, located on the famous Las Vegas Strip. Center Jay Beagle said the Golden Knights, who scored all three goals in the first period, came out with more intensity than any team the Capitals have faced this season.
The Golden Knights style is fast and flashy, and watching them on their home ice is a party in itself, according to Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin.
"Its like you [are] in a nightclub," Ovechkin said at media day for the NHL All-Star Game last week. "Its like a party. Everybody dancing over there. Its like, ‘Holy Jesus, are we in a hockey game or is this like a pool party out there? They're very, very tough to play against."
That might help explain Vegas's league-best 19-3-2 home record.
Ovechkin joked the Capitals home digs carry a different atmosphere, one that he hoped could make the Golden Knights "a little bit sleepy."
The Golden Knights play to this point has been anything but. Trotz noted they have "three legitimate scoring lines" and are led by 27-year-old center Jonathan Marchessault (18 goals, 30 assists), who was a 30-goal scorer last season for Florida in his breakout campaign before being made available to Vegas in the expansion draft.
Winger David Perron, an 11-year veteran who came off the St. Louis Blues roster, has 13 goals and 33 assists.
"They're a proud group," Trotz said. "They play as one unit. They're relentless. They find ways to win. And there's no pressure on them. Its all gravy. They just play. They've been playing with house money frum day one, really. Everyone looked at that team and said, ‘They might make the playoffs."
Note: Capitals forward T.J. Oshie has been fined $5,000 by the NHL for cross-checking Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang on Friday night. The fine, which was announced Saturday morning by the NHL department of player safety, is the maximum allowed by the leagues collective bargaining agreement.
NOTE frOm ArJunaZ: I Apologize for the misspelling of the the word "frOm" Throughout the article and this note. If I change either of those to the correct spelling the server throws an "Internal Error". If I use the same word in a different post it works just fine. This is a bizarre bug that took me an hour to track down.
-
Hens lost last night,
-
Alan May just RIPPED the NHL for COMPLETE lack of consistency on ANYTHING after Oshie got fined $5,000 for his crosscheck on Letang Friday night. He said it was because it was against the leagues beloved Penguins. OUCH!!!! LOVE IT!!!!

Won’t be surprised if he gets fined for that.

Can't really argue that. It wasnt a vicious crosscheck by any means. Those kind of plays happen in every game. He got a penalty, thats all he should have gotten.
-
Tuch is a god damn madman. . we need a couple of guys like him

May is too nice, I'm very surprised the league fined Oshie instead of Willy
-
:18z:
-
Caps score first!!! Caps score first!!!
-
Stevenson is making Bura and Commely expandable
Far better two way player then both and now out scoring Bura
-
May is too nice, I'm very surprised the league fined Oshie instead of Willy
Good point, Neither deserved a fine, but Wilson's hit actually took out one of the Hen's darlings.
-
Why can't someone other than stephenson be scratched to make room for vrana?
-
I really like this kid. I'm happy for him. I'm probably a bit bias because he played junior here.
-
Apologies, I'm recording and not watching yet. Was reading the lineups at the beginning of the thread.
-
Why can't someone other than stephenson be scratched to make room for vrana?
They have scratched a few different players. I dont mind that. They can try to keep everyone fresh.
-
Apologies, I'm recording and not watching yet. Was reading the lineups at the beginning of the thread.
My mistake, I thought I changed that. Chaisson is the scratch.
-

Good. I was ready to rip trotz a new one for that...
-

I understand the need to preserve players, but after the way stephenson has been playing you think it's ok to bench him? I hope not.

Hell with scratching and resting.
Trade or send down. Stephenson has out played most of the roster and is now putting points as well

Shit we suck in our defensive zone coverage

I don't get to say that very often. ;)
Still late to the party tho. ::)

Fifty-some games is more than enough time for scouts and teams to figure out how to exploit a poor DCorps, and apparently they can not adjust.
Then you have Niskanen, who was our best all around D, either at about 60% health or just saying “fuck this mess, i’m just gonna get paid until they trade me”
-
I just went back and looked on my DVR to see the starting lines. They had Chaisson as 4R, which is what I thought I saw. Stephenson was NOT listed in the lineup according to NBCSW. Then Stephenson scored, so I figured either I screwed up or they did. It turns out they did.
-
Niskanen is having an off year. He looks slow this season.
-
:2z:
-
YAY!
-
What a great shot that was!
-
Kuzy made that happen
-
Kuzy made that happen
Very patient and what a sick pass.
-
....
so I figured either I screwed up or they did. It turns out they did.
was there ever a doubt
-
Keystone Caps.......
-
PK looked totally asleep. Many opportunities to pressure them and not even a single poke check.
-
Sup all
How he gets there shots off with 4 Caps around him... He should have been on his ass.
-

Carlson was in the middle of a big hit on his doobie. Can't hit the man when you are hitting the weed. He stood 3 feet away and poked at the puck with no interest in taking the body.
BUT... he should have been an all-star. SMH.

Maybe I'll start calling him pokey...
-
When your supposed best D man's first instinct is to drift away from protecting the crease, letting the guy have 3 shots at the goalie, I think there will be issues.. Just sayin..
-
. . . now Lady and I have Hopslam . . .
(I’ll explain in the ABH thread)
-
Ya the entire pk unit stood there and watched and ugh those brutal rebounds Grubauer.

The term “Fourth Forward” is more apprapos

Niskanen and Beagle stood there too and Grubauer gave up some bad rebounds. That 2nd rebound he gave never should have happened
-
:19z:
-
Nicky needed that one!

Yesh, Grubs' fault ::)

some here thought you needed to use visuals

this is two games in row Trotz showed some actual emotion about a bad call, at the beginning of the 3rd

Phone yes - that never worked.
Tablet no... Which is what I'm on now.
-
Grubauer has to stop that shot.
-
nice defense
-
Once again we come to the 3rd and look like we are playing to hold the lead, sitting back with no pressure. This is all the time for years and years.
-
Grubauer has to stop that shot.
Probably was wondering what the D was doing
-
Grubauer has to stop that shot.
I dont think Grubauer has been very good today.
-

Which is the right way, we just don’t have enough players good enough to do it.
If we pressure, we assuredly will give up turn overs and odd man rushes, if we sit back we do so with a significant amount of players not good enough to do play that way
-
ArJ, do you have the game on dvr?
-

It's a matter of nuance, Detroit. You have to make sure you don't give up odd man rushes, but you can't have 3 shots in the period.
-
BAH!!!
Willie gets revenge for a few cheap minors!
-
OV! you missed
-
100 points for whoever got the ref....
-
ArJ, do you have the game on dvr?
yes
-
Goddamn this team. Gruby sucks and the guys in front of him are of no use. Ovi has sucked balls today.
-
You could see that last Vegas goal coming!
-
for pucks sake, Grubs had that, before he put it in
-
Told ya, Tuch is a madman
Bryce Harper wore his jersey when he dropped the puck before the game
-
looks like interference from here,
-
Just play the fucking game instead of having to rely on challenges. You suck.
-
yes
make sure you get Mays post game the next few home games
-
That was interference. Such horseshit. Still he should have had it ffs
-
sounded like they were about to unleash a fury
-
Given how tight the Metro is, we are much closer to not making the playoffs than I'd care to believe.
-
make sure you get Mays post game the next few home games
OK, I always do. I have probably the last 8-10 of them too.
-
make sure you get Mays post game the next few home games
To be clear, you mean post game, not "On the Ice with Alan May"?
-
This loss is on Grubauer. Assuming we lose.
-
To be clear, you mean post game, not "On the Ice with Alan May"?
yea, post game where he has fans around him, on ice won't work, haven't seen fans behind him when he does that
-
pull him !!
-
I swear it looks like the Caps are throwing this game!
-
Who gives a shit how many points the D have? Stfu Joe and locker
-
horse pucky
-
yea, post game where he has fans around him, on ice won't work, haven't seen fans behind him when he does that
OK, I get it now.
-
It's games like this that make you realize that the Caps are a middle of the pack team at best. Much closer to the bottom of the league than the top. 3 one-goal leads and they can't make that hold up at home? Terrible. Gruby was not good. More bad turnovers from the D. Ovie was poor today. It's just another year in Washington hockey.
-
Bah! Humbug! :'(
-
That was maybe the most pathetic last 5 minutes played while down a goal I have ever seen the Caps play. They appeared to be trying to lose the game until maybe the last minute, and even then I'm not so sure.
-
God Damn, these Vegas KaNiggets are good!!
Big, smart players, with a great coach and good system
Overcome a shitty game because they knew it was a bad game, not becaude they where stat padding.
Several of players and all the front office need to grow they hell up and take notes on how to be a winnimg team and not a video game team
-
Can't hold a fucking lead, and get swept by an expansion team. Now it is officially time to send a message and make a big trade. This team finds ways to lose. Trotz cannot motivate them because obviously they don't listen. GMBM created this team. He needs to go. We had a chance to get Shero, but we decided to keep McPhee2... Worked out real well. Up against the cap and not any better. They play 3 out of 4 days and still beat us. We are shit
-

And they tied it on the road and didn't play "happy for a point" instead they pressed and got another and then continued to press after that and kept the Caps from pulling the goalie for at least a minute.
In short -- they WANTED the game a lot more than our team who looked to be afraid that OT would mean they would be late to the Super Bowl parties.
You can't keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. Year after year we do the same things with the same guys and the same coach and we get the same results. Why are we surprised?
-
I didn't think the Knights were THAT good. I thought we sucked a lot in this game. That last 5 min just blew my mind. I couldn't figure out WTF we were doing. It was a comical lack of effort, passing, and complete lack of urgency, lack of effort, lack of heart, lack of effort, lack of urgency, . . . did I say lack of effort?
:poop:
-
Who gives a shit how many points the D have? Stfu Joe and locker
No kidding and they picked Niskanen as the player of the game because he had 2 points. So what. He had a terrible game in the defensive zone. On the last goal he held the guy and slashed him and still lets him get away and score. Of course it doesn't help when your goalie can't stop a beach ball.
-

This was a game we should have won. Goaltending was brutal. Defense was brutal.
-
I was curious from the start why we started Grubauer. Holby did not have a good game against Pittsburgh. I was wondering if Holtby was getting a mild message delivered to him.
-
So why did Gruby get the start today? Seems Trotz could of found a slightly lesser opponent to get him some work with.. They're gonna need some grade a goaltending down the stretch if they want to keep out of the wildcard shuffle.
-

Holts and Grubs are the last two people on this team that need messages sent to them

Grubby post game, "who knows what goalie interference is anymore"
-
Grubby post game, "who knows what goalie interference is anymore"
It wasn't goaltender interference. Grubauer had a terrible game. But the defense has to play better in front of him. Especially Niskanen. He has been awful.
-
Holts and Grubs are the last two people on this team that need messages sent to them
We need Holtby to get his shit together and ride him. Fuck Grubauer.
-
Grubby post game, "who knows what goalie interference is anymore"
Yeah, it's about as confusing as trying to figure out how many genders there are this week. The NHL is just keeping in line with the current insanity in this world. Why be male/female or even LGBT when you can be LGBTIQCAPGNGFNBA?
-
This loss is on Grubauer. Assuming we lose.
YHGTBFKM,
how can you blame the goaltender for the lack of defense in front of him? Ridiculous assertation
-
OK, I get it now.
maybe Friday, you'll know it when you see it
-
watching the post game, the locker room is very dejected, if they don't win Tuesday in CBus I expect a breakdown worse than the one in Colorado
and CBus is here Friday
-
And they tied it on the road and didn't play "happy for a point" instead they pressed and got another and then continued to press after that and kept the Caps from pulling the goalie for at least a minute.

Well we’re not surprised, but Teddy & Dickless keep pouring us KoolAid and telling us it’s 30ur Scotch because there’s enough morons who will believe Scotch is red and they can hold their alcohol
-
YHGTBFKM,
how can you blame the goaltender for the lack of defense in front of him? Ridiculous assertation
He let in 3 goals that he should have stopped. One of those goals he put in his own net. He looked shaky all day. He has no rebound control at all. His positioning is terrible and he goes down way too early. When does make a save, the puck just hits him which is why he can't control his rebounds. He has no clue how to direct a rebound to the corner.
There was some defensive breakdowns for sure but I really don't recall Grubauer bailing out the team once today. I know Beagle bailed out Grubauer though. Vegas didnt really get alot of high quality scoring changes but still scored 4 goals.
You can't blame Carlson for this loss. He was only on the ice for the pp goal that Vegas got.
-
Backstrom is delusional. He was saying that the Caps keep battling for goals whether or not we are up or down a goal. Brent Johnson just said what I said, that the Caps gave no effort in last 19 minutes of the third and took their foot off the gas after they scored their last goal.
Even after we gave up the tying goal we were :poop: on the ice.
Did I say lack of effort? :raspberry:
I'm really feeling like the Caps only care about collecting their paychecks. Who needs to play in the postseason when you don't get paid shit for it anyway? The other day I was figuring that Oshie gets paid $70K for every one of the 82 regular season games whether or not he plays. He would have at least play in the Stanley Cup final to get paid $70K for the entire post season. These guys know they are not getting there so why even make the playoffs to get paid nothing.

nothing you've said backs up your assertation that this loss is all on Grubby,
-
Looking pretty weak lately, and especially bad on defense. No idea how this team has won 30 games so far.
This whole group needs a wake up call. Trades, maybe a gm and/or coach firing.. I wouldn't mind seeing ovi leave. He makes too much for what he provides on the ice. Then maybe get a real gm who knows what to do with the cap space. Instead of blowing it on players like Orpik and Niskanen like the current guy did.
-
nothing you've said backs up your assertation that this loss is all on Grubby,
Duh 3 of the 4 goals were on Grubauer. Weak rebound control on one goal. Terrible positioning on another goal and the last one he put in himself. He also got beat a few times but got lucky with posts or teammates bailing him out. He did not make one big save. He did absolutely nothing to help his team.
Like I said Vegas didnt get a lot of great scoring chances but they still scored 4. How could you possibly defend this guy. He had a terrible game.

These guys know they are not getting there so why even make the playoffs to get paid nothing.
pride
I really want to believe that, but when I see the Caps on days like today I genuinely question their motivation. I believe we should have won today. We beat ourselves for sure.
It seems I've been in this place before. This is a broken record we keep playing each season with this team. Something drastic has to change, or we just need to settle with seeing Ovie set records without a Cup.

Ok - so I watched Schmidt all game. He is a better dman than anyone on our team. If you watched the game, there is zero argument. He not only has more talent, but he has more heart. You wouldn’t see him stand around at the side of the net while some guy wacks away and scores.

No point in beating a dead horse. Management blew it and now he is gone. Can't change it.

at the same time you openly admit the entire D corps had a horrible game, so once again, nothing you've said backs up your assertation that this loss is all on Grubby
And like I said even though we had some defensive break downs they didnt result in many scoring chances. Grubauer should have stopped 3 of the 4 goals. Thats nitva good game.

I figure sooner or later they have to make me GM.

The best thing they can do is clean house.
Managment has blown almost everything for the past 10 years

no shat, we all saw it wasn't a good game, by anyone. But it wasn't all Grubs fault as you said earlier

The team played well enough to win this game. In fact this was a game that we should have won. If we had even average goaltending in this game we win easily.

No, he didn’t have a great game, but he probably played well enough to win. But the 6 Dmen hirt him way more than helped him.
One of the things to note is with the garbage that’s in front of them, our goalies have no room to allow softies of any kind.
Now I’m saying excuse them, but even Hassak and Broduer missed with their glove once in a while. . . but they also didn’t have Dman giving the puck away right in front of with no one else around, high volume turn overs multiple odd man rushes, Dman player mg behind the net so they can’t get back, and forwards that watch breakaways as they glide back.
But they did have was Coaches and 1& skaters that protected them, and more so on off games to stop the proverbial bleeding. Holtby and Grubauer have nothing like that. Which is probably why after those “ones they’d like to have back”, everything goes downhill very quickly
