Capitals forward Jakub Vrana will be a healthy scratch against the Flyers
(https://img.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_960w/2010-2019/Wires/Images/2017-10-08/AP/Canadiens_Capitals_Hockey_41987-2e0ab.jpg)
Capitals forward Jakub Vrana has just one point in 2018. (Nick Wass/AP)

An hour after the Washington Capitals’ morning skate started, with most of his teammates off the ice and already out of the locker room, Jakub Vrana knelt on the ice to catch his breath. The 21-year-old forward did a lot of extra work Wednesday morning — firing shots at an empty net, cutting back and forth in a small space, stickhandling along the boards — meaning he will be a healthy scratch when the Capitals take on the Philadelphia Flyers at Capital One Arena at 8 p.m. Wednesday night. It is Vrana’s first healthy scratch since he was out of the lineup against the Colorado Avalanche on Nov. 16.
He started the season hot, scoring 10 times in his first 32 games, but his production has since tapered off. He has not scored since the Capitals’ win over the Boston Bruins on Dec. 14, and he has just three assists in the 16 games since. His lone point of 2018 is an assist against the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 12. He played a career-low 6:25 in a game against the Flyers before the all-star break and 9:11 before the Capitals’ five-day layoff that leads into Wednesday night’s game.Capitals Coach Barry Trotz has said he wants Vrana to use his speed to create scoring opportunities, but Vrana has not been able to do so while bouncing around lines the past two months.

“I just think, like I said, I’ve been saying all along I like our group of forwards,” Trotz said Wednesday of why Vrana will sit against the Flyers. “I need him to be a little more involved in our game, a little more impact in our games. He’s got a real high skill level and speed that we can use, but he hasn’t that much on the games probably in the last 10, I think he has maybe one assist, I think last time he scored was in December.

“And I just think his game has fallen off a little bit in the last little while, and other guys have elevated their game, they’ve been out of the lineup or been put in the lineup. A good example is Brett Connolly. He was going to be a healthy scratch and he wasn’t even that playing bad. Our group was going pretty good, and he jumped in there and got hot. Sometimes with a young player, nothing can have more impact than not being able to showcase your talent. He has to understand that there’s 13 forwards and they are going to compete for his ice time, and he’s got to compete for his ice time to get it back. And he will.”

The Capitals’ long layoffs have often led to losses but could bring a long-term benefit
(https://img.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_960w/2010-2019/Wires/Images/2017-01-15/Reuters/2017-01-15T212119Z_1195948554_NOCID_RTRMADP_3_NHL-PHILADELPHIA-FLYERS-AT-WASHINGTON-CAPITALS.jpg)
John Carlson and the Capitals will finish the season with 33 games in 66 days. (Geoff Burke/USA Today Sports)

When John Carlson skated for more than 27 minutes in the Washington Capitals’ season opener at Ottawa in October, it was a taste of what was to come during a season that would continually test his physical limits.

The veteran defenseman has topped 25 minutes of ice time in 33 of 49 games, and he is averaging a career-high 26:07. (His previous high was 24:31 during the 2013-14 season.) In nine games this season, he has been on for more than 28 minutes, all while pairing with rookie Christian Djoos, facilitating the Capitals’ top power-play unit and providing stability for a team that lost much of its defensive depth over the summer.

Coming out of the all-star break, the Capitals (29-15-5) have played just four games in 18 days. These kind of breaks — for bye weeks, all-star games or just odd gaps in the schedule — have not been good to the Capitals across the past two seasons: They have broken rhythms, started scoring slumps and offered a handful of head-scratching losses. But for players like the 28-year-old Carlson, who is taking on a heavier workload than ever, this recent lull could prove integral in the final stretch of the regular season and the playoffs beyond.

“Maybe it’s not going to help in the next week, or even two weeks, but over the course of the year, rest matters a lot if you treat it as that,” Carlson said Tuesday after the Capitals’ first day back on the ice. “So the importance of making sure you’re doing the right things and not straying too far away from what you know — I think we’re all professionals in here and take care of ourselves the right way to make these little breaks and times of rest … just optimize them as much as possible, because that stuff is all over now.”

[Mike Green may be on the move. Could he land with the Capitals? (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capitals-insider/wp/2018/01/29/the-red-wings-mike-green-may-be-on-the-move-soon-could-he-land-back-with-the-capitals/)]

Now, the Capitals finish the regular season with 33 games in 67 days, starting with an 8 p.m. matchup with the visiting Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday. Now, they will look to defend their spot atop the Metropolitan Division without a significant break until the end of the season. Now, they may wish they didn’t speak so poorly of those five-day layoffs while they were scrambling to rediscover their game.

After their bye week earlier in January, the Capitals dropped three straight games (although two were in overtime) and had a 153-minute stretch without a five-on-five goal. Those droughts ended in a 4-2 win at the Florida Panthers on Thursday ahead of the all-star break, and the Capitals are looking to make their most recent layoff a springboard instead of a setback. But either way, as Carlson pointed to, the Capitals will benefit in the long term from having a patch of downtime in the middle of their schedule.

During the regular season, the Capitals’ forwards don’t see a lot of fluctuation in their ice time. One reason for that, as pointed out by winger T.J. Oshie before the all-star break, is the team’s consistency at center. The Capitals have had the same four centers — Nicklas Backstrom, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Lars Eller and Jay Beagle — for 140 of their past 144 games. Those centers play similar five-on-five minutes from game to game, which means their wingers, on average, will do the same, outside of extra time for power-play and penalty-killing duties.

[In a young man’s league, an aged Alex Ovechkin is still a star among stars (https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/in-a-young-mans-nhl-32-year-old-alex-ovechkin-is-still-a-star-among-stars/2018/01/28/abcea452-0473-11e8-8777-2a059f168dd2_story.html)]

This has not been the case for the team’s defensemen, after Karl Alzner (free agency), Kevin Shattenkirk (free agency) and Nate Schmidt (Vegas expansion draft) left the team this summer. The Capitals start rookie defensemen Madison Bowey and Djoos, heightening the workload for Carlson, Dmitry Orlov and Brooks Orpik. Orlov’s average ice time is up from 19:32 last season to 23:08 this season. Orpik, regularly paired with Bowey, has seen his average time go from 17:47 to 20:33. Carlson and Orlov have also had increased roles on the reshaped power-play units.

“Yeah, probably,” defenseman Matt Niskanen said when asked whether the team is fresher at this point than it would be in other seasons. “In the short term, those long breaks are not good for your hands and your timing, so guys are going to be a little bit rusty. But long term, it could be beneficial just to give some muscles and joints time to heal up and rest. … It’s going to be real busy here, so guys should be rested and ready to go.”

The all-star break also helped the team get healthy: Kuznetsov suffered a lower-body injury against the Panthers but will play Wednesday against the Flyers (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capitals-insider/wp/2018/01/30/capitals-center-evgeny-kuznetsov-returns-to-practice-after-injury-scare-in-florida/?utm_term=.45c9812d5e2f), the center and Coach Barry Trotz said. Kuznetsov exited midway through the third period of that game after seeming to overextend his left leg after a faceoff. He did not return but was centering a line with Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson at practice Tuesday.

That spoke to Trotz’s larger point about this recent stretch of off days, practice days and days spent waiting to get back into the normal rhythm of the NHL season.

“If you haven’t healed up by now,” he said, “you’re probably out of time.”

“The more games we have, the better we play, I think,” Kuznetsov added.

And, for the first time in a while, he and his teammates will have a chance to prove that.

A big 4 point game tonight.  Caps need to win this game, losing again to the Flyers is simply not acceptable.  I am hoping the Backstrom line has a good game, they need it after the game against Florida.  Neuvirth is starting for the Flyers, hopefully we light him up.  A couple of years ago he really shut us down in the playoffs.  I am off to the game.  GO CAPS !

Interesting.  Ovie has never scored a goal on Neuvirth. Tarik mentioned this to Ovie and I think it will give him extra motivation tonight. Tarik said to Ovie that Neuvirth is the only goalie he has played with that moved on to another team that he has not scored against.

I'm so sick of this suck ass shit team.  We need a major trade for some real defense and some speed. We will lose again. Why can't this team play some real hockey?  This is ridiculous, and our GM needs to be replaced

Yeah. It's shocking tbh.  Like they don't even know who is on their team.  Just too lazy, or too scared of the o
pposition and having to pass blindly, or too soon.  No control or authority, or confidence.
YUK!

The sad fact is the rules that favor “talent”, and the best goalie (at least one of) in the league, this team can stay close, scrape a point or two out and finish high in the standings . . .

There’s a good chance with a call or two we win this, despite playing like a Mites On Ice team in the first.

But as we’ve seen year after year, that doesn’t make a good team, or a team that wins more than one playoff series

meh, two points, but just a “drama” game.

So we can come back from 2-0 to win 5-3 against our former goalie (who was apparently sick)?  There was to much sloppy play and mistakes for  the 50th game of a team with a goal of a Cup, or even the second round.

listening to post game with Ken Saborn, apparently we have a player named Bearakowski, again. Honestly, if it were me that man would not interview me until he can pronounce my name.

Many of us knew that leaving him unprotected was a mistake.  GMBM really screwed up on that one.  I knew Schmidt was a future star just a few months into his time with the Caps. They could have probably kept him without taking a big cap hit too. I've missed him for sure.

Like 90% of things, GMBetaMale beyond screwed this up.  Considering protected MoJo, who he had to trade because he was bullied to overpay the Euros, then only got a third for him.   Also throw in Bura who he not only overplayed, but who’s top-shelf talent, has totaled 4 goals this year.

All while loosing a quality D and going into the season with a DCotps in shambles.

This was enough for him to be canned at almost any other team

No one is answering who we should have left exposed instead of Schmidt. We protected 3 dmen and 7 forwards and Schmidt was our 4th dman. I may have exposed Niskanen. Vegas might not have taken him and if they did we would have dumped a big salary. Another option would have been to protect 4 dmen and 4 forwards. We might have lost a key forward but we have still had Schmidt and we might have been able to keep Johansson as well. Either way we were going to lose a pretty good player. Other teams had the same problems. The Panthers decided to protect 4 dmen and they ended up leaving a 30 goal scorer exposed. Not sure what they were thinking. In the end the rules for the expansion draft cost quite a few teams and help build the Knights into what they are. Pretty easy Pickens for the expansion team

Mojo and Eller, protecting Beagle and Schmidt.

If GMGM took either Mojo or Eller we save cap money and still keep a center.  Even then we could add depth at forward via UFA (if they aren’t sent to Hershey), and then there’s enough forwards in Hershey to bring up and down so you don’t hurt your DCorps that already is hurting.

I wanted Schmidt protected over Carlson, but IMO we should have been allowed to protect 4 defensemen.  I was a huge Schmidt fan from very early on and was the first on the forum to proclaim he was a future star.

I thought the teams were required to leave too many players exposed for Las Vegas. Obviously, given their current record the Golden Knights got to cherry pick from too many great players. There were plenty of teams with more than 4 good defensemen for them to pick from and do well. Limiting protection to 3 Defensemen was pretty messed up IMO. This was only for one expansion team.  The teams were allowed to protect less players than in the previous expansion draft which was for two expansion teams. It will be pretty messed up if LVGK win the cup this year.

Heh, it would of been pretty damn cool if teams could adjust their protected list after each pick, . .

well if any GM could have still planned it to work to his advantage, it’s GMGM.

I’ve said this before, but the ownership in Vegas is letting GMGM do his own thing and reaping the rewards.

I mean here’s a team with out a single bonafide superstar, that’s in the toughest division, and is a legitimate Cup contender in their first year, and will only get better.  That isn’t just because the new expansion draft rules, that’s because they got the perfect GM to burn the league with it

Oh ArJunaz, I know you dont care for Carlson but he is head and shoulders our best dman. Protecting Schmidt over Carlson is preposterous. You can't even say for Cap reasons because 3 Caps dmen make more than he does. I know you dont care for the guy but let's try to be realistic.

Pretty much, however. . . leaving Carlson unprotected may have worked for us.

GMGM didn’t just pick players, he picked contracts, so he could very well have not picked him.  I’m not talking about the player himself, but his contract for an expansion team.  We all know Carlson will be getting a payday, and had he had the year he had had here, resigning him would have been tough for GMGM considering the cap situation he’ll  have coming up.

So while almost no one would say Schmidt is better than Carlson in Carlson’s role.  His contract, and price tag makes him a far better choice for GMGM as he gets an upper tier Dman for far less than Carlson’s.

I did stumble across this old article though, LA did what I was suggesting and expose high dollar players and protecting value players. . .  and low and behold, look who the number one unprotected player was: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/2017/6/17/15825002/nhl-expansion-draft-unprotected-players-2017-vegas-golden-knights (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/2017/6/17/15825002/nhl-expansion-draft-unprotected-players-2017-vegas-golden-knights)

I love Schmitty as much as the next guy, but how much of the love Schmitty is getting is Monday morning quarterbacking.  For almost all of last year he was our 6th - 7th D-man.   You don't protect a guy who can barely crack your starting lineup, unless as DC suggested you are trying to entice GMGM to pick up a contract you could do without.

Yes, there is a fair amount of Monday Morning QBing here. and last year he was 6th - 7th on the depth chart.

However, at the least, GMBetaMale knew, or should of known, that Alzner and Shattenkrap would not be back, and i believe Orlovs contract wasn’t done, which left Schmitty, Chrony, and Hershey to fill out the DCorps.
So I believe the biggest issue is protecting the likes of Mojo, Bura and Eller while exposing an excellent young two-way Dmam that can play both sides all while you’re at risk of loosing half you’re DCorps.

Hey I think Schmidt is a great kid and has a chance of being an elite Dman.  However if there wasn’t an immediate need for him, I’d say good luck.  So this is less about the person/player, it’s more about GMBetaMale being a terrible GM

DC the facts don’t support your contention that BMac is a bad GM.  The year before he took over the Caps didn’t make the playoffs.  Since he has been here we have had the best regular season record in two of the three seasons.  This year despite all of our personnel losses the team has done much better than most people expected.  I think MacLellan has done a fantastic job and the only GM who has done a better job during this time is Rutherford.  There are a heck of lot worse GMs out there and we are fortunate to have BMac IMO.

I love how you keep trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. I am not a Carlson hater. Carlson is a good defenseman. I just rag on him when his brain goes blank, which is too often for my liking.  He's also improved a fair amount this past season.

The fact is that I really liked Nate Schmidt, both as a nice guy and I also saw him as a future superstar d-man.  You weren't around back then, but others here know that I was the first to sing his praises and predicting that he would be a star.  Schmidty was also a lower cap hit than Carlson, which was paramount after last season.  Schmidt also always gave 100%, something that could not be said for Carlson.  This year it's understandable that Carlson is not 100% balls to the wall since he's playing so many minutes, but he was a slacker in past years, and those Quaalude moments always bug the hell out of me.

I really did not like the way the NHL set the rules for the draft. The 7-3-1 option to fill just one expansion team was ridiculous.  In the previous draft, which was to fill two teams the teams got to protect 9-4-1 as an option.  This makes more sense.  There were other rules in place to prevent teams from leaving only recent call ups exposed.

All that said, I'm saying this from my bedroom having never played a single shift of hockey myself.  I know these guys must work incredibly hard and here I am nitpicking because that what fans do.  I am not a Carlson hater.  I actually have greater respect for him now then I did in previous seasons.  I still really like Nate though.  The only players I really do not like are the ones that are mean and nasty and that try to hurt other players by playing dirty or players that embellish all the time;  people like Subban :poop: , Crosby  :poop: , Clutterbuck :poop: , Marchand :poop: , Shaw :poop: , Kessler :poop: , Simmonds :poop: to name a few.  Carlson is a nice guy and for that alone I couldn't hate on him.

If he had the same control he has in Vegas, it wouldn’t matter.  We’d have Cups.

Now to his credit, GMBetaMale can market and make fan friendly moves.  So Im sure he’d  do great for a team that needs splashes and names to get immediate new and renewed interest. . .

How is my logic flawed? Just because you personally dont like a player doesn't justify giving the player away. Say what you will but Carlson is still our best dman whether you like it or not. Our dcore is a mess right now. I thought right from the start that we should have protected 4 dmen because good dmen are harder to find than forwards. I dont think my logic is flawed.

This just illustrates mamagments priorities, and ability.

A better President and GM, would have been able to see who is unprotected in the league, upcoming UFAs, upcoming contracts, & who’s on their roster, and who’s replaceable. Moreover, the guy picking the expansion draft was here for 10 years and they couldn’t come up with a strategy for minimal loss and give GMGM minimal gains?

They has more advantages than every other team and lost what could become a future all star

I thought management did a decent job in recruiting decent skilled players but we didnt bring in any much needed grinders and physical players. We could really use more players that play like Wilson. Or on defence we could sure use a younger and faster Orpik.

Yep, problem is they don’t see that and/or agree with us.

If you look at what beats us, it’s not as much stars and skill players, it’s the Defence anc Depth players that ultimately do us in.

We are soft and our defensive zone coverage has been brutal. And its not just the rookies. Niskanen and Orlov have been caught watching way too many times.
To the guys that have been riding Bowey. He has struggled moving the puck at times. I think alot of that is lack of support from Orpik. However he is improving his defensive play and puck moving. The guy I'm concerned about is Djoos. He is struggling in the defensive zone.

Funny thing about Green when he was here was that a lot of people didnt like the offense only approach by a defenceman. Now that is very common. Every team has a couple of defensemen that play like that. I guess he was ahead if his time. He isn't the dman I would want. I'd rather have a shutdown guy. Like a Hjalmarsson or a Hamhuis.

Correct.  But, Green has developed into an excellent 200ft Dman in Detroit.  Almost to the point his  offense approach is almost limited to the Power Play.

I have little doubt that he would be the best Dman on the Caps if he came here.

However, it will come down to Holland vs GMBetaMale, so not only do we need way more than Mike Green, we’d  way over pay for him
