No Backstrom again tonight, that is disappointing and getting worrisome. What is troubling is that in the game he got hurt which was the Ducks game there was no indication that he got hurt. He didn’t leave the ice or anything to indicate he was hurt. In fact if memory serves me, he was on the ice for one of the last shifts in the game. While most reports indicate it is an upper body injury I have also seen reports it is a lower body injury so I don’t know what is going on. I sure hope he plays Friday.
Tonight will be the 7th game in a row that Backstrom will miss. With the Caps having severe salary cap issues and having to shorten their bench to keep in compliance with the cap, you'd think it would make sense to put him on LTIR retroactively, keep him out for 3 more games, and use the space to bring up extra players while they are on the West Coast.
I think there is one reason and one reason only that they aren't doing this, and it's an indication of how much they value Backstrom. If he were to go on LTIR and HAVE to miss 3 more games, the tenth game would be against the Bruins. I think the team, if they feel he can be back by then, want him on the ice to play defense against the Bruins' top line and they are willing to go through all sorts of salary cap gyrations simply to have him available for that one game.
:74z:
SICK GOAL!!!!
After a wicked game last night the Caps do not appear to be slowing down tonight. Great to see this!
What's happenin' Puck!
eyelids are getting heavy, may not make it to the end
Carlson is improving his depussification. Tonight he stood up in the face of an opponent and pretended he would fight.
:snicker:
LMFAO, AJ!!😂🤣😂
Although I was gritting my teeth, the truth had to be told about Carlson!!😂👍
On a more serious note, The obvious work he’s put in on his offensive skills, may translate generally, in the physical, to improve his overall coordination and reaction time a little bit. That certainly couldn’t hurt him on his defensive side!
(That and cancelling his Quaalude scrip)!! BWAHAHA!
Rush
Gotta admit, haven't seen any sign of Quaaludes in the boy this year.
times like this I wish I had a twitter account, I've some choice words for this johhny for norris thing
Hey Mick!
Are we chuckling a little bit tonight? Or maybe a little bourbon, buddy?😂🤣
Uh, Yes!! :snicker: Good to see on the board buddy!!
Gotta finish this kill.. First 5 minutes of the 3rd is big!
Which Capital is the spider when faced with a confrontation?

I believe I saw a faded #74 on its abdomen!!😂🤣

In yellow, of course!

You win the Internet for December 5th.
I'm not really that down on Carlson for the not fighting thing. Some guys are obviously not cut out for it. I call them gentle lentils.
Probably wouldn’t bother me as much either, if he didn’t try to get an Oscar, for appearing like he wants to fight!! 😆😆
Here we go again, with Rob Carlin!! I swear I’m gonna mail that guy a photo chopped, nude photo of John Carlson, with some fake sticky stuff on it!!!
I’m sure he’ll think it’s a Christmas present from a fan !!
Hey folks!
Rush, (aka molasses thumbs), here, attempting to keep pace on the GDT!
In the heavily popular, “lip service” world, that NHL coaches have to play in occasionally, with the media, It is so cool to witness, in real time, evidence, proving that an aspect of something they’ve been working on has now began to bear fruit!!
Enter coach Rierden, and his declaration, during preseason this year, that the coaches would be working with John Carlson on his offensive skills!!
A few seasons ago, had I witnessed a goal similar to John Carlson‘s 2nd goal tonight, I would’ve blabbed on about what a crappy defenseman when he was, and spouted off something along the lines of “even a blind squirrel, gets a nut sometimes”, or any other analogy that would fit!!
Simply put, John Carlson has obviously put the time in, AND Rierden had the foresight to make the call, to allow special training time at practice, for it to happen!!
Hands down, this training has really paid off!!
In my opinion, I don’t think there’s anyway JOHN Carlson would have made that kind of quick, and coordinated move, to make that goal, just a couple seasons ago!! NO WAY!!
Kudos to both Rierden, and Carly for a nicely coordinated job well done!!!
(Ok, he’s still a defensive pussy, BUT THATS NOT THE POINT)!!😁😆😁😆
Every month, John Carlson continues to show the value he is to this team!
Rush
I’m definitely with you on that, Alta!
The scary reality though, with todays’ NHL, It’s not like the Norris goes to the guy with the most hits, or blocked shots, or takeaways, anymore. It’s getting more like he just has to have the title of “defenseman“. Whether he’s a fourth forward or not.
Offensive points matter, for the Norris trophy! Now isn’t that a paradox??
Rush
The Norris trophy is given to the best all around defenseman. IMO he certainly quailfies as one of the best all around offensive defenseman. I will wait to the end of the season before I say who I think should win it but certainly at this point in the season Carlson is the leading candidate....for "the most Offensive defensemen"
Whens the last time the norris winner wasn't an offensive D man? Besides, he's the best defensive defenseman on our defensive hockey team, so don't be getting all defensive!
Isnt Johnny Norris also going against the top lines of the opposing teams and shutting them down?
I mean he is a +21 this year and a +101 on his career
I take offense to that :snicker:
The idea that Carlson is simply an offensive defenseman is not true. If he is so bad defending why does Rierden have him out there at the end of games when the Caps are protecting a 1 goal lead? The fact is that Carlson is solid defensively, he is rarely out of position and you never see him get beat by an onrushing forward. He is very good at tying up opposing players sticks and neutralizing them. While he may not throw a lot of hits he is one of the leaders in blocking shots. He is a good all around defenseman and the Caps are fortunate to have him.
Let me suggest this to our conversation about the best all around player at his position....(which is what the Norris is awarded for)
If we put forth that Johnny Q Norris Carlson is the leading candidate for the Norris trophy because of his offensive abilities (when the trophy is supposed to go to the all around best defenseman at the position....
Then I suggest by that standard that Alex Ovechkin is the best all-around forward in the league. He is by far the most prolific and successful goal scorer on the planet in the last two decades. He is a fantastic goal scorer AND is in the top 5 or so in Hits in the league since he’s been in the NHL.
I love having him on my team and he has been at times the MVP of the team and the league
BUT...(everyone I know has a really big but) I don’t know anyone who knows hockey well that would say Ovie is the best overall player at his position in the entire league and award him that trophy.
Ovi is great but he is not the best overall player at his position.
Again I am not knocking Carlson or disagreeing that he is a great player, I am saying his offensive prowess does not make him a great (much less the best) defensman in the league.
Jesus Rush, I thought I was a blabber-thumbs ;D
Rush we will have to agree to disagree as to Carlson’s defensive abilities, what is important is that we agree that the Caps are fortunate to have him on our team.
What I really want to know is why a golf course needs you there at 5:00 a.m. what do you do at that time of day.
I would never have imagined that there are that many dedicated golfers in this area whowould be teeing off at 7:00 a.m. in December. While the temperature may reach 50 this afternoon it sure wasn’t that this morning. I am impressed. I can understand why you would need to be there at 5:00 in the morning during the summer but not in the winter. The sun doesn’t even rise until after 7:00 a.m.
I’m a starter one day a week, every Friday. On a day with higher morning teetimes like this morning because of the temperatures were going to be above 50, we have to get 80 to 90 golf carts out on the line, Set up the driving range, and get the water jugs out and certain holes. Then I’ve got to be on the first tee checking off guys by 7 AM.
It’s actually a great retirement job for me, and I get free golf privileges at five of the courses in the area in the Rasberry Golf system.
You’re right about the Carlsen thing, buddy. The important thing is he’s a valuable for the team and our team is doing awesome

And by the way 4CAPS, if you ever wanted to get out on one of the raspberry system courses just let me know, via private message or whatever, and I can work it out for you!Rush thanks for the offer, I appreciate it but I am not really much of a golfer. About the only time I play is when we go on vacation in Minnesota. Just curious, what are some of the courses in the rasberry system. I am only familiar with some of the courses in Fairfax county.

I don't think there is a member here that is not happy to have John Carlson on this team. Some simply say he is not worthy of being called the best defenseman under the older definition of what that means, which is a shutdown defensive player. I think everyone here is in agreement that Carlson is the best offensive defenseman in the league. It's not a black or white thing.
The dislike for Carlson on this forum is ridiculous. People here loved to hate on this guy and now they are begrudgingly giving him some credit white still looking for ways to rip on him. This group has some of the most negative people I’ve ever seen. I barely come here anymore (not that anyone cares), but I pop back in and while the team is off to the best start in their history and Carlson is having an amazing season I see some people still finding ways to be negative.......amazing.
Great.
You just had to go and make it racial.
Now we're really gonna here it.
