Title: Tech Issues/Suggestions
Post by: alta on Tuesday December 12, 2017, 06:34:42 PM Eastern
pinned

so far I’ve noticed; the like button is in an awkward place but having the dislike is great
is it possible to make the smileys a tad bigger

Maybe it’s because I’m using IOS but when I post a reply the screen takes me to the main Caps hockey page instead of the page I just posted on

should pin this maybe,

I think the like button is good where it is myself. I've already been planning to change all the smileys and making them much bigger. It'll take some time though.

we’ve got plenty of time,

Ok, the button location may be fine, just gotta remember where it is, but the way it’s applied looks more like you are liking/disliking the member rather than the post

Is it possible to limit the likes/dislikes to one per post?
I mean for to be able to only give 1 like/dislike per post, but not limited to how many posts that you like/dislike.  (Which was a bit of an issue on the other boards, as you know.)

Does that make sense?

To clarify.... If I really like a post, I should still only be allowed to give it 1 like.  If I like it a lot, I will comment on it.
Similarly with the dislike, which can easily be abused, should be limited to 1 per post.

I ask this constructively, so that these buttons will not get abused.

Regarding this (the like/dislike buttons), will we get to see the who's?  Who is giving us the likes/dislikes?
Do you/the Mods get to see them?  So you can see if somebody is actively targetting someone?

Awesome job, so far!  8)

Oh, by the way, can we get the heart emoticon back?

Why has my text shrunk?

Edit.... I didn't touch anything, it just went all tiny - again.....

And now it comes up as BIGGER???????????  WTF?

Is that fixed for you?  It is an individual user setting that you can change, but I "think" I made it the default for the two forums 2-3 days ago.  It worked for me and I believe DC said his was good too after I made the chance.

To change it Go to "Profile", "Account Settings", "Look and Layout" and you can check or uncheck the box that says "Return to topics after posting by default."

Let me know if this already changed for you a couple days ago.

Today I changed it so you can only give a user one like/dislike every 15 minutes. No limits beyond that.  I will try to write some code to display a timer if you attempt to click it again too early, but that's not a priority just yet.

Regarding this (the like/dislike buttons), will we get to see the who's?  Who is giving us the likes/dislikes?

I tried to  find a way to do this.  I have not seen any way to do this, and no the moderators and admins can not see this.  These are not even logged.  I will put this on the far back burner and maybe one day try to write some code to display who liked/disliked each post.

I plan on changing and enlarging the emoticons. So much to do and I can only do so much each day.

Used to be on the standard boards, so it must be out there somewhere.
As an expert (NOT) could a post/paste not work?

I have added that. You should see the link clearly on the right side of each post.  Let's all try to be tolerant and not misuse this feature.

I'm tired of being a "Senior Member."
I don't see a way for me to change that title.
I'd like to be a "BitchBoy" or as a fallback title a "Senior Dismemberer."
I am certainly not a hockey diety........
Help me out here.... ;D

Just go to your profile/forum profile and you can add a custom title (like I did with Chairnan Of The Hockey Board).

However the Senior Member\Hockey Diety are hard coded based on the number posts that you’ve made, Im not sure what thersholds are.

What is the significance to the colored squares in the member title area?  I grasp the more squares refer to the number of posts and the subsequent "sub title" (oh to be a deity some day...)
What is the significance of the color of the squares?  DC is Blue, AJ is red, Maaco is yellow, etc....

Regular member groups are Yellow.  Global Moderators are Blue, Board Moderators are Green, and Admins are Red. You're correct the number of squares is related to the numbers of posts which determines the member group as below.

Member Group      # of Squares   # Posts => than
Newbie                *              0
Jr. Member            **
       50
Full Member           ***
      300
Advanced Member       ****
      1500
Senior Member         *****
     3000
Hockey Diety          ******
     5000

Might I ask you to "pin" the "other games around the league"  thread?
No big deal or anything,  just that most Caps fans are hockey fans first and like to see and talk about other teams and players too.  That thread covers a multitude of things.  :)

Question:  After I post, there is a number that comes up just below the post, at the bottom right, just after the "Report" option and the angled Rubik's cube thingammy.  What is that?  I don't see it on anyone else's posts.  It doesn't change, so it's not a post count.

Also - You know I'm going to start about the emoticons soon, right? ;D

That icon represents interconnected computers and the numbers to the right are that user's IP address.

I just 60 seconds ago backed up the site to start working on Emoticons.  I've been collecting them for a couple weeks and now just need to adapt them to the site.

You are reading my mind Lil, or vice-versa.

Inter-connected computers????  ???
Pretty sure I'm not connected to anyone else.....am I? :o

As for the emotes, can you not just copy/paste?   My e-mails have some pretty good ones that I used to use.
I'm being dense, aren't I. Not a question.. :-X

And now, having just checked, they've got rid of the good one's.  Pfffffffff.

Maybe this is a good place for a POLL?  Personally, I would rather see fewer, but better emoticons, rather than more, but lamer ones.  I would like a heart emote back and a "LOL" or ROFL and a "puke".  Also a straight face.  Maybe you could poach some from other sites?

I think  you are doing a fantastic job AJ, and I can't give you credit enough!  :-*   (See, that should have been a heart emote).  You could do with some technical support.  If I could, I would, but.... well... we both know I can't.  You have started this amazing site.  We need to keep it going and it shouldn't be ALL on you.  There are a few tech wizzards (Terry Patchett ref), that could help out.

I may not be a tecchie, but if I can help, just ask.

Big hugs.

A little 50/50 to be honest.  Much better overall, for sure, but not what we need.  Too many that are redundant.  A couple that have been excluded.

May I suggest that you go a little further back to get the better ones?

Care to be more specific?

Let me guess.  You would like the emoticon that has a bunch of heart hovering over the smiley, so you can express your feelings for your favorite hunks on the team.  Am I close?   ;)

I'm pretty sure we have the equivalents of some of the ones you pointed out in the PM Alta. I just put up additional heart ones for Lil.

I've added two others at the left right side of the list that should satisfy Lil's hunk-a-licious emoticons.  :hearts:    :whatahunk:

It's late. I have to be up early.  I'll try to refine these later.  This was only a first crack at it.  I figured there would be comments and requests. no problem there.

Good night!

You are amazing AJ!  THANK YOU!

Is it possible to have the script 30% bigger and the emoje's 30% smaller. so that they both fit?  So far the emoticons take up a whole paragraph of space and I have to squint a little to see the script...

Also, I only need 1 "heart" emojie.  The last one is pretty redundant and ginormous......!!!! :whatahunk:   Funny as it is, we don't need it.  Either of the other two work just as well.  I'm assuming this takes up a lot of   um.... space?
I don't think we need the "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" either

Pretty much when I first came here, most of the emoticons moved in some way or another.  They were simple but fun.  Basic, but effective.  I don't know why they were extinguished.

I think that's your Josie and the Pussycats look, with a tail.  If you have a better idea for an avatar just send me links to the images and how you envision them put together and I can probably do it for you.  I figured I would put something up that you might like since you had no avatar.  i'll work with you on it. I suppose I could just remove the tail (which I thought looked a bit like a hockey stick) and you'll be left standing on one leg.

Welcome Houston!  Don’t worry we got the Hens Trolld covered  :devil:

One of the many reasons we started our own boards was the moderaoers protecting them.

So should any of them find there way here, they’ll be luckey if they’re only banned onsite.  This is an uncensored, unoffilated, non-profit site, which takes their shield (aka Jags and Paid) away, so any of their attempts will amount only to our amusement  8)

This is a post/support ticket I posted on the SMF forum.  It's a bizarre problem and I am obviously not the first person to report an issue with using the word "from" in some longer posts.  I found this exact issue going all the way back to 2009.  i am just posting a copy here for reference.
AJ

I have been running a board using SMF 2.0.15 Since mid-December and it has worked great.  I've noticed on rare occasion when I post a fairly long post, but not longer than the 40,000 char max I have set in settings, the server will throw up an "internal server error".  The complete error is down below.

After careful troubleshooting I isolated the problem to the word "from".  Regardless of where I place this word it causes the error. If I change any of the characters in the word "from", even a single letter to upper case, then there is no problem.

If I create a simple post using the "from" word only there is no problem. In longer posts it does not matter where in the post I place the word "from", it will cause the error.

Here is an example: The first post on this page has a few instance of the word "frum" in it. If I change ANY of those to "from" it will not post, but will throw the error.
  URL - galactichub[dot]com/CapsForum/index.php/topic,76.0.html

I did a search on this problem and found the exact same problem from 2009 in this thread.

Internal Server Error By Using "from" Word in Post

I do hope this can be resolved. This is sure to frustrate some users.

Below is the complete error. There is nothing in the log. Again, this is a very clean install.

Maybe you cleared your cookies or something, or used a different browser.  I never have to login.  I set it up to be really easy for all.

I clear the cookies every time I do a scan, which is at least once a week.  I've never had this problem before.   :-(

I don't know of any website that will not log you out if you clear the cookies for that site.  This includes the NHL Capitals forum.  Without the cookies which store the information about who you are there is no way for a website to keep you logged in.  The only other possible way for a site to connect you to a browser session is by your IP address, but since many people get assigned a new IP address every time they boot their PC no one uses this.  Using an IP address to remember a user would also be very problematic for shared computers and Internet cafe's.  Cookies are the only method to remember who you are.  When you click on "Remember Me" when you login to a website you are basically telling it to track you via cookies that have a long expiration time, but if you delete cookies then these are gone and you will be logged out.

To get more technical: There is on our forum a session ID that is used to track users who do not click on "remember me".  I set the limits on this to I think 4 hours to prevent people having to log back in during a typical GDT if they are not storing cookies.  This is done on the server side and uses resources on the server, which is why you really don't want to make these last too long. Some sites, such as banking sites, shopping carts, etc. will use both session ID's and Cookies as this offers a little more security that someone won't hijack your session and execute transactions on your behalf. These ID's are long randomly generated keys that are often tied to your IP address for a short period of time.  These are not practical to use to keep track of a user's login over long periods.

You will need to maintain the cookie for the forum if you want to remain logged in for extended periods of time.  Even cookies expire, normally after 365 days if not renewed.

I hope this helps.

There is no way around this.

Is it possible to get a "ding" when there are new posts in an active thread?  ie: GDT's?  No biggie or anything, but I'm still doing the flipping back and forth between the game and the on-line commentary on this notebook and having techs' getting back to the game after checking for recent posts.

To clarify, I have an HP Notebook thingammy, that has Windows 10 installed.  Keeps telling me I have no more disc space.  My dad explained that this model isn't suited to that program and that the W10 program takes up all the disc space.
Pops (my dad), is an amateur comp expert.... :-\
We did find out that I can't replace my disc with a larger one.  Naturally, I would have the only model, or thangammy, that can't.   ::) STRAIGHT FACE EMOTE.   (Hint,hint AJ ;) l)

I don't know what you are doing to change the size of your text and exposing the underlying code.  I do notice that you very often quote messages and then post your reply within the quoted text, which both makes your response tiny and not separated from the quote. I wrote a news item a few weeks ago for you (top right of page) explaining how to place your reply text AFTER the /quote in brackets.

On the notification of a new post; there is no facility built into this software to maintain a push connection with the users. I sometimes use a Firefox plugin called "Check4Change" which sounds an alarm when a new post is made on a specific page I am monitoring.  If you have Firefox 57 or higher the newer version is required and is called "C4C".  It's a little tricky to use for some people, but I love it.  Mostly, I just refresh once in a while and see the new messages.

I'll look into possibly adding some third party plugin to the site that might add push technology to notify members of updates to threads via popups.  Adding third party plugins is not a good idea since they often cause problems. If I was running a for profit site I might expose myself to the hassle, but I don't need any extra headaches doing this for free.

On your computer. Is it a PC or some kind of tablet like a Microsoft Surface?  I find it hard to believe that any Windows 10 PC does not have at least 25 times more space than the operating system requires.  A tablet is different.  A Microsoft Surface 3 with minimal memory (like 64GB ) running Windows 10 could run out pretty fast since Windows 10 would use at least half of it. Getting a larger SSD in it would be one solution. Removing some apps or data would be another way to clear space.

My current device is an HP notebook.  It looks, and sounds and works like a laptop.  It just isn't, is it.

It seems it has Windows 10 installed,which appears  to be taking up most, if not all of the disc space allowed.  I believe it should have Windows 7 as it's natural installation, but then got up-graded before I inherited it.

I've not had any trouble, but I am methodical in how I do things.   The only thing I can think of is that you are resizing text and then either editing or copying and pasting pieces of the message.  I have noticed when you cut and paste a post with embedded codes (such as size, URL, etc) in the WYSIWYG editor instead of code view that you can potentially grab and split up parts of the underlying formatting code. Then inserting this code within other formatted text can combine and/or split the code up to where it doesn't make sense.  I would recommend either not using resizing or do your complex edits in code view.  Another solution might be to complete editing your post before you change the text sizes and add other formatting.  Preview your post to make sure you haven't scrambled it.

What is the URL to the photo?  it should work.  If you are trying to post the url to the avatar itself, that is not an image, but a reference to the avatar and you can't try and post it as an image.  Place the photo on a photo website like photobucket and use that link to post the image.

My current and only operational device is this notebook.  It's an "HP Stream notebook".  I keep getting a message FREQUENTLY, that the disc space is full.  I have checked and a bigger disc cannot be put in this device.  I sat through over 20 minutes of some guy unscrewing screws to find this out.  :-\   Apparently it is Windows 10 that is taking up all my disc space.  This was already on here when I inherited this device.

Edit:  I think - but I'm not sure - that this was originally designed for Windows 7??????

changing the hard drive and adding memory are two different things, they actual different pieces. If you can increase memory it would help the maxed out hard drive.

ok

Like I said before,don't know what a hard drive is.  My problem is with the disc.  ItS not my original PC, so I don't even know if it has a "hard drive".

 I should just get my old and ancient PC fixed, huh?
The only thing wrong with it was the problem with the mouse connection in the actual PC.  Stupid and pathetic, but it is a nightmare to un-plumb my pc.  It was a major feat of engineering to get it set up in the first place.  I know it's a fault within the actual pc box itself that has a problem connecting to any mouse.  Including a remote one, so it is definitely an internal connection that has broken.  Then a friend gave me this notebook because they didn't use it.  I thought it was a laptop untill recently...  (roll eyes)

Meh.  Me and technology.  Same ole', same ole.    Sigh

Curious if we can allow the “Upcoming Calendar” events to tie into saveable/add-able iCal/Gmail saveable events that could link to the thread slated for the event?

I'm not familiar with iCal/Gmail.  I've read that iCal import has limited functionality on this site and no export capability, but that was for a slightly older version (2.0.0) of the software. I don't know what if any differences there are in this version (2.0.15) I can't find any documentation on how to use it. I read that the next major release of the forum software is supposed to have enhanced import and export iCal functionality.

I've not slept since Wed morning and my brain is not fully functioning right now. I'll have a look when I'm fresh and see if I can figure it out how to import and possibly export. You may need to know the calendar event ID to import to it. Not understanding the Google iCal is not helping me.

If I were to guess I think the URL to access a calendar event, if it works, would be something like this

    https://washingtoncapitalsfanforum.com/index.php?action=calendar;sa=ical;eventid=102 (https://washingtoncapitalsfanforum.com/index.php?action=calendar;sa=ical;eventid=102)

where the event id must match the event id of the calendar event. You can see it in the URL if you edit the calendar event. It looks like "eventid=102", the one for tonight's calendar event.

I'll attach the "Calendar.php" and "Subs-Calendar.php" and "Post.php" files to this post and you can have a look and see if you can see how it lines up with what you need. We can edit these too and test when the site is not too busy.

If we use any google API's in the code we'll probably have to install a couple of PHP modules to the site. I believe CURL & JSON might be needed. I think I have these available to install.

We should probably talk on the phone about this in the future.

I just found someone that wrote a tweak for the 2.0.0 version of SMF Forum, again ours is version 2.0.15.. Claims it works for both Apple and Google iCal exports.

Here is the modified function: (would go in Calendar.php)
--------------------

function iCalDownload()

   global $smcFunc, $sourcedir, $forum_version, $context, $modSettings, $mbname;

   // Goes without saying that this is required.

   // Load up the event in question and check it exists.
   $event = getEventProperties($_REQUEST['eventid']);

   if ($event === false)
      fatal_lang_error('no_access', false);

   // Check the title isn't too long - iCal requires some formatting if so.
   $title = str_split($event['title'], 30);
   foreach ($title as $id => $line)
   {
      if ($id != 0)
         $title[$id] = ' ' . $title[$id];
      $title[$id] .= "\n";

   // Format the date. Note: No separator characters are to be used! jre -2011-06-26

Title: Re: Tech Issues/Suggestions - Screwy text formatting code in posts. Solution.
Post by: ArJunaZ on Tuesday May 29, 2018, 09:51:49 PM Eastern
Some people are having issues with the font formatting code. I'm guessing they may be formatting text (changing size, color, etc) and then editing, copying, pasting, or otherwise moving the text around. This can maybe split the code due to grabbing (unseen) formatting code and moving it, which can cause it to be divided and placed out of sequence. The best thing is to type your message and then the very last thing you do is format the text. If you follow this procedure I can't imagine having any problems.  Look at my OP on the GDT's. I have tons of formatting and no issues.

OK, here's what I did to figure this out.

I had a hard time replicating this.  I found that the site  is really good at dealing with cutting and pasting mixed format text. I still do not know how to replicate the problem consistently. I think this may simply be a  random bug, but I did seem to figure out how to clear it up easily if it happens.
I just saw the issue where the code fragments came up after some crazy editing and pasting. It happened when I clicked on the toggle view button (https://washingtoncapitalsfanforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/toggle.gif) twice.  I  imagine if I had posted it at that point it  would have displayed the code fragments, but what I did was simply click on the toggle view button (https://washingtoncapitalsfanforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/toggle.gif)  two more times and it cleared everything up . So maybe those that are having this issue can simply click toggle view button (https://washingtoncapitalsfanforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/toggle.gif) twice and then post after the code get's  properly organized.

BOTTOM LINE:  If you see your post is screwed up then simply "Modify" your post by clicking on "Modify", then
click the toggle view button (https://washingtoncapitalsfanforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/toggle.gif) twice.  This should clear up the funky code fragments.  It did for me. Then "Save" your post again.  I have reproduced this (still not sure how) a few times and each time it is resolved by following this procedure.

I would love to hear feedback from those who have this issue and try this solution.  It doesn't usually happen to me, so any help would be appreciated.

The only symbols that I see to click on, to give a “like” are the same that evidently everyone has under their avatar. If it is the little guy with his hand stuck out, when I hit it, it takes me to the individuals profile page. I see no little green “thumbs up” as in the list of likes given. And mine never show up there. Thanks

The site was configured to require that you post 50 times before you can "Like" another post. i just changed it to 10, so you should see the link now on the left side of each post.

Just click where is says "Like this Post"

and welcome to the forum.

Ok, thank you, I was not aware. Possibly in the rules somewhere?  I had asked before and another member replied that it was under my avatar. Possibly they did not realize or did not think of it at the time.
