Todd Reirden on scratching Dmitrij Jaskin: ‘I use him at the end of a penalty kill and then it ends up in the back of our net’

Headline photo: Elizabeth Kong
For their first half of a back-to-back, the Capitals have scrambled their fourth line yet again.
Coming off an agonizing 5-4 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers, it’s Dmitrij Jaskin who’s been asked to stay in the press box, as Devante Smith-Pelly returns to the fourth line featuring Nic Dowd and Chandler Stephenson.
When asked about why he switched out the Russian born forward, Todd Reirden, annoyed, pointed out a goal during the Panthers game that he thought Jaskin was responsible for. I asked Reirden about Jaskin getting scratched again: "I use him at the end of a penalty kill and then it ends up in the back of our net. Those are situations where we have to find people that can be used in all different areas of the game, especially back-to-backs."
It appears Reirden is referring to Frank Vatrano’s first-period goal that came right as TJ Oshie’s tripping penalty expired. Jaskin fails to clear the puck, allowing Vatrano to wrist a shot home from the slot.
The goal gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Jaskin scored most recently against the Calgary Flames on February 1, and has shuffled in and out of the lineup throughout the season, playing in only 34 games. As Peter addressed earlier, the Caps need to get serious about who will play consistently on the fourth line, and it appears Jaskin might not be in those plans.
Meanwhile, Pheonix Copley will start in goal against the Kings on the first half of this back-to-back, and it’s assumed Braden Holtby will get the nod against the Columbus Blue Jackets Tuesday. Copley’s most recent start came in a 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche.
The cellar-dwelling Kings are turning it around a bit, having picked up at least one point in their last four games.
Jonathan Quick will start in net.

Awesome....I hadn't even realized their was a game tonight.
Hopefully someone tells the Caps this so they freaking show up!
Also, hopefully they try something different, like playing up to their potential INSTEAD of their usual playing down to the level of their opponent to the point where they make everyone else look good.
So glad their sitting Jaskin. I mean why would we want a guy out there that actually plays with some intensity and hits people and hustles and shit like that?
Someone call Ovi and tell him to bring his game tonight too. Haven't seen that in a while.
Time for an impressive win.
GO Caps!
-
Could of swore they were off till tomorrow myself.. It's like a drinking night just popped up on the calendar unexpected!! :hearts: :snicker: 3 games in 4 nights coming up! Hope they have their heads out of their ass'.. :uh-huh:
-
Damn NHL Schedulers. Caps have 3 back-to-back games in the next 13 days. All of them include travel between games. A couple of three day breaks during this period too. Could not make less sense.

Do you think we can win against a bottom tier team that has had 5 coaches this year?

Orlov is a pussy!
Hi AJ!

Is there a rule against hitting opponents now? We certainly appear afraid to even fight for the puck, much less hit anyone.

I had a strong feeling we were going to score even before we entered the zone on that one. You could just tell the Caps were on a mission. Why does that only happen in brief spurts? I don't know.
-
nice work on the blue line there ::)
-
Watching these Capitals is so frustrating. Brilliant one minute and utter crap the next. Every shift is like playing Russian Roulette.
-
That injury has devastatied Quick.
3-4 years ago, he was the best player, not just goalie the best player on the planet. He could, and did, win any game or series regardless of the other 11 players on the ice.
From 2029 -2015, he was the most dominant and all but inventive goalie I’d ever seen, including Fuhr, Hasek, and Broduer (yes I watched regular, and went to Kings games regularly, I even went to Halperns first game when he was traded to the Kings wearing my Caps jersey)
Now, what used to be easy saves for him are praised goals for the shooters

damnit man, if you've got a time machine you need to share

looked a little better, but still just a pp

:O=
When was the last year that we saw a Capital bump someone out of the crease? Two years, Three?
-
I knew it wasn't going to be a two goal win, but didn't want to ginx em
-
WTF is Bura doing throwing the puck at the bench during a line change?????

74 has no business carrying the puck in,

Much better finish than what we saw in the first two periods. Sloppy game overall. We needed those two points. That top line is hot!

A few of them were a tad suspect. The refs were pretty awfull in the first period. Glad they swallowed their whistles as the game went on.

Yeah, they swallowed quite a few that should have favored the Caps. I guess these refs never get called out by their bosses for crappy performance . . . Ever!
-
Imagine that..
-
We're seeing positive signs of life on offense. If our defense can get it together I will be a happy fan.

well. they didn’t score 5 so I guess that’s progress 🤣
-
Well the good news is this team goes as Kuzy goes so.....
-
tomorrow they play the jealous asshats that mocked Kuzys bird
-
Giving up that many goals against another shit team isn't good....
-
If they don't bring their A game tomorrow, they'll likely get embarrassed.. Should give us an early glance if they got any fire in the belly at all. Given they were mocking Kuzy last time and we've been playing like shit for over a month.

Agree. I see this as a "test" game. Beating a basement dweller like the Kings is one thing, but we need to rack up wins against actual playoff contending opponents too. CBJ isn't even cream of the crop - they're basically in the lower tier of playoff contenders. If we can't beat them how do we expect to win against any elite team?
-
Good win (any win is good) but the D still needs a lot of work. They allowed the Kings way too much time to set up shop in their offensive zone and skate circles around us on too many occasions. It seems that we have a real problem disrupting the flow on 5v5 once the opponent gets established in the zone. Hopefully we take it to C-bus tonight.
PS I wonder if the dumbass who threw his hat on Kuzy's way late empty netter feels like an idiot this morning. Hope it wasn't a favorite hat.
-
Anyone know why Vrana looked the way he did after he scored? Not his usual celebration.

How'd he look? I didn't really pay attention to the celly..

Key issue here is lack of physical play. Odd thing is we can bring it when we want to, but for some reason in games like last night we seemed afraid of our own shadows and allowed the Kings to rule the ice. FFS, how many times did Orlov back COMPLETELY off a board battle for the puck seemingly afraid to hit or get hit by an opponent? The Kings had little or no reason to look over their shoulders. This improved for the last 25 minutes, but nowhere near what we are capable of. This has to end tonight or we are doomed. Tonight needs to be WAR!!! I'm hoping maybe they were saving some up for the important game tonight against a top division rival.
-

He looked like he had a toothache or something. Usually he's quite animated.
-
Anyone know why Vrana looked the way he did after he scored? Not his usual celebration.
Just a guess Barf, but he had an issue last year with putting too much pressure on himself, similar to Bura’s issue. Trotz reset him and he has appeared to have it under control since, judging by his improved performance and play.
Since he was in a bit of a scoring rut before that goal, I believe his feeling of pressure release, (relief within himself), overrode the natural joy of scoring the goal! If you notice after he scored, Oshie came over and appeared to console him a bit, (maybe something said that was reassuring), while also congratulating him.
Although it was subtle, I noticed Vrana different look after his goal also!
Just my two cents
