Overall I thought that was a solid period by the Caps. The third and fourth lines I thought looked the best they have all season. Top two lines not so much. Holtby made some big saves. Hope they can keep it up for two more periods.

Wow great special team play by Caps. PP finally showing up and nice shorty by Wilson. Caps have an even strength goal, 2 power play goals and a short handed goal. Don’t see that very often. Now lets see if Caps can keep this lead. Hopefully, they won’t sit back but will keep attacking. In that period they only had one quality scoring chance at even strength. That is concerning.

Those blind no look passes have basically given the Preds two goals IMO. Instead of taking a moment to think and clear pass or dump in there is too much hopeful passing and the Preds are jumping all over it.

Just fucking horrible to take a 2 goal lead into the 3rd and come away with zero points. Top to bottom a shitty effort in the 3rd. The Metro will be really tough this year and giving away points in October may come back to bite these jokers in the ass in the spring. The coach knows how they should play but he has zero ability to convey it to his team.

They've led after 2 in every game and are 2-3. Play in our own end was especially horrible tonight. Outside maybe Jensen and Gudas, the defense sucked. Holtby looked like crap. Sit his ass the next couple games.

We need to stop putting him on a pedestal because his Vezina caliber seasons were thanks to Mitch Korn. Mitch Korn can take pretty much any goalie and turn him elite, but once that magic leaves the goalie turns into an average joe again.

Holtby has gone steadily downwards since Mitch Korn left. :-(
Is it that Holtls isn't doing any of that any more? Has his new coach got him out of some of those practices? Is it a motivational thing?

I was thinking the same thing, that conditioning is a problem. But no team is in prime mid-season conditioning form anyway, every team is a little out of shape, so we can't really use conditioning as an excuse.
I think the issue is plain old coaching. Team has a game plan and use their talent to dominate in the first portion of the game. Then the opposing coach, being an NHL caliber coach, adjusts. After a couple periods their coach fully understands what we're trying to do and tweaks their game plan to defeat ours. We're left flabbergasted because Reirden doesn't know how to counter. The guy is almost as dumb as Oates.
You can clearly see what good coaches out there can do, because they can take teams with half as much talent as ours and make them perform as well or better than us.
I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but if we're not going to bring on a real coach and therefore will lose a ton of games anyway, we might as well just play loosey goosey firewagon hockey and at least make games interesting.

My feeling all along was that the combination of the new third and fourth lines would match the goal output of the previous third and fourth.
Our new fourth line has certainly looked better than I thought it would, and the third is kind of dragging (as far as output). I think Panik will get better. He's been kind of snake bit. He did score one in preseason. Hags is what he is. I'm not sure we were expecting tons of output from Hags, but some contribution and mostly a big PK guy too.
We shall see....
