T.J. Oshie and the Capitals return to action Tuesday night. (Ethan Miller/Getty Images)Capitals forward T.J. Oshie’s Christmas break started with teammates, sharing a flight to Minnesota with defensemen Taylor Chorney and Matt Niskanen, as well as Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt, a former Capital. But Oshie spent the rest of his three days off with his wife’s family, watching his two young daughters enjoy the holiday and open their gifts.Oshie said he appreciated the relaxation away from hockey, but the Capitals’ respite ended Wednesday morning and immediately the team will face a slate of tough opponents.[Nate Schmidt is the latest ‘one who got away’ from the Capitals (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capitals-insider/wp/2017/12/24/now-in-vegas-nate-schmidt-is-the-caps-latest-one-who-got-away/)]
They face three Metropolitan Division foes in the next four games, starting Wednesday night against the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden. If they want to maintain their status as one of the top teams in the standings, they’ll need to refocus quickly.“I don’t know how many games we’ve played, but it feels like Christmas is sort of the halfway point, so I feel like teams really start to kick it in gear here,” Oshie said. “Teams look at the standings and realize that there’s not much more time to mess around or much more time to — I guess take it easy isn’t the right word — but not much more time to not give it your best every night.“We’ve got to hunker down here. Everyone else will be.”The Capitals won’t return a full lineup in their first game back.Fourth-line forward Chandler Stephenson missed the team’s morning skate in Arlington on Wednesday with an illness, a team spokesman said, and he won’t fly with the team to New York. Alex Chiasson, a scratch in the team’s 3-0 loss in Las Vegas on Dec. 23, will likely fill Stephenson’s spot on the right wing.Goaltender Philipp Grubauer took shots at the end of practice and appears likely to start in net at Madison Square Garden, saving regular starter Braden Holtby for a quick turnaround when the Capitals play at home against the Boston Bruins Thursday.[Grubauer knows his best shot at a No. 1 job lies outside Washington (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capitals-insider/wp/2017/12/25/philipp-grubauer-capitals-backup-goaltender-knows-shot-to-start-likely-lies-somewhere-else/)]
But those who will play against the Rangers harped on the importance of regaining a routine out of the break. The players developed a rhythm from late November until the Christmas break to earn 11 wins in 15 games. Now tied for second in the division with the Columbus Blue Jackets (46 points), the Capitals see their upcoming schedule as an opportunity to separate themselves from the fourth-place Rangers (42 points) and their other divisional foes.“We’ve still got a long ways to go before we are where we want to be,” Oshie said. “So, important stretch here there next four or five games to get us back on track.”After the Bruins Thursday, the Capitals welcome the Metropolitan Division-leading New Jersey Devils (47 points) to Capital One Arena on Saturday. Then in January, the Capitals have six games — starting Jan. 2 at the Carolina Hurricanes — against divisional opponents. Just nine points separate the first-place and last-place teams in the divisional standings.“Big points on the line tonight, and tomorrow and the next game, so we’ve got to be ready to go,” forward Brett Connolly said. “It’s definitely an important three games, and it’s going to be an important month, too.“There’s a lot of games, a lot of big games, against teams in our division, so we’ve got to be ready. I think guys had a good break, and we’re ready to go now.”

Thanks for putting up the GDT Alta.  It's been a hectic day for me.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas holiday.  I've been very focused this holiday on family and the billions of people whose lives should and could be so much better if not for the many greedy, pathetic SOB's that work feverishly to ensure these less fortunate brothers and sisters of ours will never have the opportunity to pull themselves up and into the kind of world that holds the pleasures that we all enjoy and that many take for granted.  The New Year brings us an opportunity to help get our own house in order, get the country back on track, and to expose the Deep State globalists who've held the world back in ways many cannot imagine, much less believe.

As we enjoy this game tonight we should think of those who can't even begin to think of such luxury and frivolous behavior as attending or even sitting and watching a hockey game, or anything that requires the things we take for granted like electricity, clean water, food, etc..  We have a long way to go to remove the swamp rats holding the world back and even the simple act of putting your attention and desire on it will help.

It's time for all knowledge to be revealed and to share the bounty of the Earth with everyone.
God Bless All.
AJ

Now!  Caps need to Kick some Ranger Butt tonight!

My apologies from straying from Hockey in this thread, but this has been heavily on my mind this past week as I have tried to help my son appreciate the many blessings and opportunities he has that most others can only dream of.  I know that he will make a contribution that will facilitate the change we want to see and be in the world.  We all have that power.

Caps play is ugly beyond belief.  Terrible passes, turnovers, losing puck battles, and not as physical as the Rags.   A swift Trotz kick in the butt is in order.

I wonder sometimes 8) . The radio feed is 30 seconds behind the tv, the online feed is 35 seconds behind the video. I'd rather listen to the penis.

NHL needs to learn from MLB, over there the radio feed exactly matches the video feed

They refuse to shoot. Oshie is pissing me off tonight. He has passed up 3 or 4 shots in this game. No wonder we are last in the NHL in shots on goal.

Grubauer bailed out Niskanen on that brutal turnover. The guy had a wide open net. I have to admit Grubauer is playing very well but he has been very lucky too. A couple times he had no clue where the puck was.

It's still a tad early to move her to adult food, but Harris Teeter has been been selling quality chicken breasts for $2 a pound at the meat/seafood counter. That's why mine is getting more chicken. The quality canned food I get him is $3ea. There is a HT in town on top the hill, I used to shop there when I lived down there. Feed her well and you should get 14-15 quality years from her. Mine has eaten better than me since the day I got him and he doesn't look like he's about to turn 10

Obviously their morning skate today, did NOTHING to knock the holiday rust off!!

It's just one game for now, but considering they've lost two in a row, they look like the Caps from the first 15 games. Playing with no direction or purpose!! Terrible puck handling!!

Bad thing is that he was by far our best defenceman tonight. Niskanen tried to give this one away several times.

The Caps displayed a totally lackluster, heartless (Trotz's "Lack of urgency"), brainless in that game.  We deserved to lose ten times over, but Gruby again proved to be a top notch goalie that could play as a primary goalie for any NHL team.  How this team can come out and play like that given how they are capable of playing and how much they are paid to play is monumentally mind boggling.

We have been over this before, but we should not have Ovi in the shootout. It should be Oshie, Kuzy and Backstrom in that order. I know Trotz wants to preserve the hierchy but he has to make that change!

You are blaming Carlson because he couldn't get the wrap around to go. If you are going to blame guys make sure its warranted. That isn't. He missed the wrap around. Those things happen. At least he gave himself an opportunity. He was one of our better players tonight after Grubauer.

I'm not a big shootout fan, but we've done ok. OT hasn't been bad either!  We're LUCKY to have even HAD an OT and Shootout tonite!! Outplayed across the board. The goalie battle was awesome! Grubs gets us an undeserved point, and he's STILL thrown under the bus!!   BASTARDS!
I don't think the rangers played that well! We handed them a lot of mistakes, and Grubs helped keep them from capitalizing on us, especially in the 3rd!! We simply played bad enough to lose in regulation, but were spared the trauma!  Ridiculous!!   AND BOSTON TOMORROW!! Yeah we're ready!!

I'm now seriously questioning the heart of this team. Ovy could really use a night off in the skybox.. He has been lazy and drifting.  I lost count of how many turnovers and giveaways they made. They do not value the puck possession. The players that won't shoot need to sit. This euro passing shit is getting really ridiculous.

Let me add on here. Maaco, Carlson ISNT the reason we lost! The entire team fucked up, sans Gruby!  But he definitely COULD have been the reason that we would have STOLEN A WIN!!  That play was the very definition of being a SINGULAR play to WIN the game! In another sport he'd be called "the goat", or any one of many words, that are used to describe a player who had a game-winning opportunity BY HIS HANDS ALONE, and simply BLEW IT, BIG TIME!!!  And you say my criticism is NOT WARRANTED!!  I rest my case!

Every Washington Capital sans Gruby deserves criticism tonight.  Everyone is at fault for that pathetic display.  Many players had chances to score and blew it. Besides Carlson missing a wide open net on the wrap there was Ovie in the crease with time to lift one over Pavelec and appeared to have been sharing the 714's. During one PP we had three guys in the crease with the puck and not one of them took a shot at net. Those were but a few of and endless stream of insanity. As others have said, you can't possibly score if you don't shoot the damned puck.

I dont consider not scoring on a wrap around a fuck up. He needed to reach his stick out a another 6 inches or so to be able to wrap that around the post and into the net. Not sure if he had enough time. The goalie was out of the play but the dman was closing in. Its unfortunate he didnt score on it but it didnt lose us the game.

Grubs was lights out tonight. For forwards Oshie, Movie and Kuzy had bad nights all the other forwards were invisible. Our dcore played alright. The 3rd period the pairing of Orlov and Niskanen had some issues.
