Title: Gersich to Sign with Caps
Post by: 4 Caps on Wednesday March 21, 2018, 08:18:40 PM Eastern
It is being reported that Shane Gersich will forego his senior season at North Dakota to sign with the Caps.  I wonder if gets to play any games with the Caps or will he just go to Hershey.  At last summer’s Development Camp I thought he was easily the best forward prospect in camp.  He is not real big, listed at 5’11” and 175lbs but he has good speed and hockey sense.  Since the Caps do not have many top forward prospects I hope Gersich develops into an NHL player.

Thanks 4Caps.
Sooo glad you came over.
Do you have any more info on this guy?

Edit@  Is North Dakota one of our farm teams?

Now a technical question........
If we can just sign anybody from anywhere at any time, why do we have an official "draw" once a year?

North Dakota is a university, he will go straight to Hershy, I'm betting he needs at least 1 season, but more likely 2 to further develop

But how are we allowed to do that without him going into the draw?

"KVRR Sports, the FOX affiliate in Fargo, North Dakota, is reporting that 2014 fifth-round pick Shane Gerich will forego his senior season with the North Dakota Fighting Hawks and sign an entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals"

Caps already signed him, just waiting for him to finish university

Hen dhat dere math and legal-like stuff is mighty difficult ain’t it Mick?

Can’t blamw the kid for living The Fighting Souix early, given GMBMs preference for undersized and non- physical players and that there is little to no compittion for him in last place Hershey,  it’s the best chance he’ll get for the NHL

He did go through the draw or draft as we call it.  He was taken by the Caps with the 134th pick in the 2014 draft.  Normally a team has two years to sign a player they drafted.  However there are a couple of exceptions.  If a player goes to college a team has until August 15 after his senior season to sign him.  This is why it is important that we sign him now because if he goes back and plays his senior season he could then wait and sign with any team after August 15, 2019.  This in fact happened to us a couple of years ago with Thomas DiPauli.  We selected him in the 4th round but he went to college for 4 years and then he signed with Pittsburg instead of us.

Glad to hear as a NoDak grad.  I agree he needs to spend a year or two in Hershey, if nothing else but to bulk up a little.  He had a down year this year, but the team as a whole was underwhelming.

He does have good speed, which is a plus since it seems to be the way the league has been going lately

That's very surprising, I don't think kid has the skill to play at this level yet.
