Todd Reirden retools second line and swaps D pairs, Devante Smith-Pelly returns

Headline photo: @Capitals
The Washington Capitals have again changed their lines for Game Five against the Carolina Hurricanes, tonight at 8 PM in DC. Devante Smith-Pelly will make his return on the fourth line, and Carl Hagelin will try to fill the hole left by TJ Oshie’s injury.
Carl Hagelin basically takes Oshie’s spot, switching to the right side of Evgeny Kuznetsov for a very fast line. Living legend Devante Smith-Pelly will make his 2019 playoffs debut on the fourth line with Stephenson and Dowd.
Smith-Pelly skated one round with the team’s penalty-kill unit of the morning skate.
The defensive pairs are also changed, with 21-year-old Jonas Siegenthaler next to John Carlson and Nick Jensen with Brooks Orpik. Defensive pairings have been a bit inconsistent within games, so we’ll have to see if these stick.
Upon stepping onto the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, Smith-Pelly was greeted warmly.
Head coach Reirden had already said Smith-Pelly would play in Game Five. “With the situation where, to get his game back to where it was last year around this time,” Reirden said of Smith-Pelly’s assignment to Hershey, “it was important for him to play a lot of minutes.” Smith-Pelly played 20 games with the Bears.

I have high expectations for DSP tonight :snicker:

I agree, there was no reason for that whistle. Certainly not offside.

Solid 20 minutes anyway..

Good news = we played well and are 1-0 up
Bad news = should be like 2 or 3 to 0

If we play like that for 60 minutes we got this. I am loving the physical play coming back to the Caps. DSP is a beast tonight.

Definitely could of spun the other way if we weren't engaged on the PK.. Gotta play a smart 20 here!
-
if Monday at the Canes is the normal 7:00 I'm really goona be pissed, the league has screwed DC so far, none of our games have been at the normal time and our local guys have been bumped in three games when the locals are supposed to get round 1

Definitely could of spun the other way if we weren't engaged on the PK.. Gotta play a smart 20 here!

THIS was exactly the game I've been waiting to see form the Caps. My Dad watched a bit with me and enjoyed it. His first exposure to NHL since he went to a Devils game with his brother decades ago, which he hated because it blew his ears out.

Ok boys!! Let's not be fucking suck tonight!! :raspberry:
You got it buddy!!!! :uh-huh:

Reirden got this team turned around. Good on him!! Give credit where due!

Great game!
-
6 booms, I like it!
-
I felt like Kuzy is coming back, even without scoring, he is striding well. Also coming back DSP made an emotional spark. I'd say we have seen the last year Caps' playoff game.
-
Reirden got this team turned around. Good on him!! Give credit where due!
Hey AJ!
Excellent 60 min effort for the game tonite, hands down!! Everybody “bought in”!!
I give Rierden credit for the line change ups, in the sense of getting a good spark going!!
It also appears Rierden put some redirection into the PP. very good!!
This was an extremely satisfying game to watch, witnessing the gradual energy/effort, build its way up to peak level, through the 1st period!
Only to have a steady, continual, performance, of the same, basic, magnitude, throughout the 2nd and 3rd, then putting the period on it, with the STRONG finish!!
GREAT TOTAL GAME!!! Very praiseworthy, all around!!
Although it’s not very often, I have to differ with you, somewhat, on the Rierden turning the team around thing, EXCEPT, in the sense that the head coach always, and rightly so, inherits both the praise, and scorn, in the general course of wins and losses.
My take is more consistent with the prior opinion I posted, about games 3and 4, of the series in Carolina, on where the EFFORT factor originates from!
I still maintain that it was the PLAYERS themselves, independently, and outside of the realm of ANY influence from coach Rierden, (i.e. a motivational locker room talk, a harder practice, etc.), that CHOSE to go “ALL IN” tonite!
The line changes are fine, from the coaching perspective, BUT, in the end, I’m convinced, most any of the regular line combos we have seen, would have dominated tonight’s game, IF, and WHEN, these guys all communicate to each other, that it’s time to “BRING IT”!!... AND THEY CERTAINLY DID TONIGHT!!
I will give TR the very “generalized” credit, properly due the head coach, for this GREAT WIN!!
BUT....I’ll end with this point:
Tonites game is one of those games that imparts, and deservedly EARNS, the FULL spectrum of joy and elation, that the overall fan base can feel, for the status of this type of game! (Round one playoff win)!
OR, at least, this SHOULD BE THE CASE!
As a big fan, If the max joy scale for tonight’s game is potentially a BIG 100, and the boys truly did CHOOSE their intensity level, THEN, being honest, that implies they DIDNT CHOOSE, that level of play, in Thursday’s game 4, (obviously)!
IMHO, THAT implies it’s frickin OPTIONAL, some nights, for them, (by their own admission, in some interviews)!! THAT, then, shows they take for granted, on occasion, their PRIVELEGE, of playing hockey at the ultimate professional level!!
THAT, then, DILUTES the overall feeling, because a small part of my fan experience is “ripped off”, by the less-than-stellar performances, that have been proven to be SO, when we see what they can do, otherwise, WHEN THEY REALLY WANNA!!
Even letting go of the poor performances, as is necessary for my fan sanity, LOL, doesn’t change the reality of the poor effort losses, NOT happening, and more so, the WHY, and the team attitude, behind HOW they generally occur!!
So the joy scale, for me, comes in now at a potential max of 94-95ish!
It’s a great feeling, but in the recesses of the mind, rises, that rarely mentioned, “effort stain”, that has its slight, yet, permanent effect!
On the real positive, at least we can be fairly sure, that these boys, with tonight’s effort, show that they haven’t PLANNED, behind the scenes, for an early golfing playoff exit!
Wherever the effort comes from, they look to stand as good as anybody else, for the remainder of the playoffs!! THAT IS A GOOD THING!!!
GO CAPS!!
Rush
-
Home ice belongs to us all the way to the final, if we make it there. Lightning and Calgary are out, so we have the best record of remaining teams. I suspected this could happen. ;D I was pretty confident TBL might go down. Flames helped our cause too.
Could it be in the cards? Maybe even a rematch of last year's final against VGK?
Can you imagine! Back to Back?
-
Great post Rush!
I agree with so much of what you say, but I don't just put the two loses on the players not showing up. Maybe in the regular season I would totally agree, but I truly believe our guys are as hungry as ever to win a cup.
While true, the players maybe 'seemed' to not be 100% committed the last two games, I have to give much credit for that to a very motivated Hurricanes team that took their play up to a level that made me feel we were playing ourselves. They hammered the hell out of us and dogged the crap out of us. I think that caught us a little by surprise. They earned it with excellent coaching and effort. Also, we did not get bounces, we got some some really bad calls by the refs, and all these things combined to provide a shock to our guys. Not to mention the insanely loud fan base in Carolina. To me the biggest thing that worked against us in Carolina was the excellent play of the Canes. I will fault us for not continuing to bring the physicality to them that we had in the first two games. Can't imagine why that happened except maybe the shock of being dogged, hammered with the Canes delivering both good and plenty of dirty hits, and finding our game plan was not totally not up to snuff.
It seems ALL parts of the machine made the right changes and went all in tonight with a strategy that worked. I also mentioned early in the series that the physicality (on and from both sides) would take it's toll on the Canes in the later part of the series. Look at how scared they were to go near the puck tonight. I think this will be even worse for them in game 6.
The Canes are going to need one hell of a lot of heart to have a chance in game 6 IMO. I think that if we hammer the hell out of them and especially if we do that and score first that they are going to be easily defeated. They appeared spent tonight. They played as badly or worse than we did in game 3.
I think Reirden made some bold moves With Seigenthaler up with Carlson and Hagelin taking Oshie's spot. DSP not being brought in would have been stupid IMO, so I won't call that bold. DSP might be a fool in his politics, but damn he can turn it on in the playoffs.
As you said, the PP changes didn't give the Canes the chance to hound us as we did not resort to the predictable 4 year old PP strategy that everyone knows is coming. So good on coaching there.
Doing what we did tonight after the last two games AND losing Oshie on top of Kempny was a credit to all. Hell, even the refs screwed with us again tonight. With all the changes of late we look capable of beating anyone. I sure hope we do. I think the overcoming of adversity will only serve to make us stronger for coming weeks.
-
Excellent hockey and result by Caps tonight, therefore if we continue to play in same way I would agree to see a Cup Final: Caps vs VGK
Lastly, oh boy what a phenomenal performance by Ovi tonight he got almost 3 assists, 1 goal and 11 hits
-
Well . . .as superstitions go, looks Lady & I will now need to go to an Os and then go for tacos and drink a bottle of tequila during every game of the playoffs from here on out . . . Poor us 🤣
They looked great last night, but. . . we ain’t won a Cup yet. Yeah we crushed em, but this the only time we blew em out. . . And these guys are not going to “cower in fear at our talent”, or “stop and enjoy their on-ice view of our immaculate and divine skill” like it’s EA NHL 19. Expect quite the opposite, they’re gonna be plumb pissed.
We’ve enjoyed game 5, but now we’re on to Game 6. . .
-
I'm very happy about tonight's win, definitely wasn't expecting it. That said I'm not so quick to call TR our lord and savior. He's still an ass clown in my opinion and until he gets us past Carolina and then the Islanders (by out coaching his old boss), I won't have much faith in his coaching ability. I want consistent results, not the occasional "wow" win.
In other news, thought this was pretty funny (Dougie Hamilton's wikipedia page):
https://imgur.com/BpAYvry
Note I did not write that up. Just stumbled upon it

I agree with this sentiment. Yeah we won. Cool. It was a solid game, a statement game. But let's not get too hyped up and get all aboard the back to back train because we haven't accomplished anything yet. This team isn't championship material until it wins again. And TR isn't a great coach until he gets us a 2nd Cup. So let's not go around throwing parties and patting each other on the back and hi fiving everyone. Gimme a Cup, then we'll talk.

Looks like Oshies out for the year (https://wtop.com/washington-capitals/2019/04/tj-oshie-almost-certain-to-miss-remainder-of-stanley-cup-playoffs/). If there is not retaliation and deliberate and systematic targeting of Flowererr or what ever his name is, the message will clear to any other team that they can do the same.
The Code will never go away.
Were Champs, we need to act like it.
-
that's the second time this season Oshie was taken out on a play that should've had supplemental, I'm getting pretty fed up with how the NHL calls things, and it won't change until Buttman is retired

I especially like this one..
"Captain Alex Ovechkin passed Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin for the
most Stanley Cup Playoff goals among Russians in NHL history."
OV has played in 40 fewer playoff games than malkin has, as of game 5
-
I hate losing Oshie as that guy has the burning desire and gives it his all. For some reason though, I think it might be a good thing this year, at least for the short run. It gives the Caps something to rally around and although I don't like DSP, he does give us another physical guy and we really need that.
For all the talk of the Caps being a "heavy team" I think Carolina exposed that as not true, especially in Game 3, and consistently with or D. Other than Orpik, you can argue that our D is one of the softest in the league. If we are going to make a run, we have to hold up physically.

"Captain Alex Ovechkin passed Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin for the
most Stanley Cup Playoff goals among Russians in NHL history."
OV has played in 40 fewer playoff games than malkin has, as of game 5
Let's not forget about Holtby's addition to last night's game.

Caps played really well, but Carolina was definitely OFF. I don't expect the same game from them again.
Caps bring it like that again tonight and Carolina can't compete, though.
Liked what DSP brought. Good to see Dowd score (or anyone).
When our stars outplay their stars.....Well, we have better stars, so....
Dougie.....well what do you expect from a guy named Dougie :lmao:
Holtby looked sharp as well....even thought not tested all THAT much. Still need him to be sharp, so good on him.
GO CAPS
