Reirden is stupid for not benching Holts. At least two of those goals should have been stopped.  2nd goal against was poor defense in front of him.

I really thought after the last few games, that it was fucking crystal clear that Samsonov should be getting more starts. I was pretty surprised that we went with Holts again this game instead of Samsonov. It's just incredibly obvious that:

1) Holtby is no longer the Vezina caliber goalie he used to be
2) Holtby is no longer the Stanley Cup caliber goalie he used to be
3) Holtby is not the goalie of our future
4) Holtby is not worth anything NEAR $10 million a year
5) Holtby is nothing without Korn

I mean Holts is getting paid well north of $5 million a year to let in 3 goals in 3 shots. I COULD FUCKING DO THAT. Pay me that much annually and I fucking assure you I can just as easily let in 3 goals on 3 shots.

For those who think this is an overreaction based on a couple games, no. Holtby has been on the decline since our Stanley Cup season. He had not won the Cup he would be judged MUCH differently, just based on consistently declining play.

If Sammy has a decent game, TR better fucking start him next game. If he doesn't it will just be more proof positive that TR is a fucking retard.

I really wanted Samsonov to start this game, but I can totally understand giving some respect to Holtby and letting him play. I would have pulled after the 2nd goal on two shots, but since the defense was crap on that 2nd goal I can see waiting until 3rd goal. I do believe that Holtby has lost that privilege from here on out.  I felt pretty strongly about Samsonov playing today against the Avs.  I do have to add that the team in front of Holtby has SUCKED ASS today.

Would rather give him to a garbage Western team that won't be a huge threat. Giving him to a Metro division rival and putting him in with the one guy who can actually turn him around would be bad news for us.

I agree that Braden has lost the privilege from here on out. Going forward, Holtby's gotta earn his starts again like he's a new goalie on the team.

At least Carlson is improving with age. 

Holtby seems to be heading into a slump. Hopefully not. Thank goodness that so far Samsonov looks ready to take over. Obviously, the coaches thought so to let Copley go.

Holtby will always have my respect for his past efforts and for the incredible cup run.


ETA
I wanted to add that Holtby will likely be back to old form again. Just don't see him getting his payday here. His payday will depend on how he does this year.

That heavy forecheck and physical play has to be a regular feature, not just something trotted out because you're getting throttled in your own rink.  The Caps have good size and need to use it much more consistently.  When that happens, opportunities present themselves.

Amazing that 92 doesn't seem to get this message. He's passed up at least three great shot opportunities in which he gave the puck to the Avs on a terrible pass. With his shooting skills it makes no sense.

I have to give the boys credit for trying to storm back into the game. Almost got it too if it weren't for the offsides call.

Sammy put up a hell of a fight in relief of Holeby. Is this enough to convince the coaching staff to at least keep going with him as the hot hand for now?

I can't pin the loss entirely on Holts, but if Sammy were in net not letting up 3 goals in 3 shots we'd have a better fight on our hands. Holts is on the decline and we really need to give the youngster some more reps in net. A 30 year old goalie on the decline is not our future. A young kid who has been solid in his first few NHL outings with potential to grow could be that future.

Clearly, the Caps are capable of playing a shut-down, physical game and dominating opponents, as we saw in the first two games. Their biggest problem is Reirden, a soft-touch coach ill suited for this veteran team that needs a tough voice to keep them focused and playing hockey.  Terrible mistake letting Trotz walk. They're going nowhere as long as this guy is at the helm.  (They have the same problem in Tampa, where Cooper is a mild-mannered guy, who just stands there while his team is lollygagging around out on the ice, playing pretty-boy hockey.)  Read the recent article on Brind'Amour and you'll understand why Carolina is in first place and plays a hard-nosed game.

Joe B was on 106.7 this afternoon, he still thinks very highly of Holts and thinks he’ll turn this around fairly quickly. Joe B also said the results thus far are not unexpected given the new guys and opponents so far

Again....watched the game last night...watch the Dallas game then immediately this one.  Not a great idea.  Talk about Dr Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde..




Holtby - OOH FAH.  3 goals on 3 shots.  Holy cow.  I can't say I would have pulled him before the third goal, but....OOH FAH.




Sammy looking good - gonna get more starts.  I can't really see give him all the starts until "holtby earns them".  But I would make it 50/50 anyway and see who plays better.


Also, have to consider the opponent.  It's not all on the net minder.  YOu give Sammy Dallas and Holtby Colorado....not exactly a fair comparison.


I'm really not all that twisted over Holtby....sort of counting his chicken as already hatched elsewhere.  He's just making that decision easier.  Can you imagine paying $10m for him?  I could see the Caps doing it (cause that's what they do...overpay guys based on their hype value), but if he has a shit year - or even an average year.....let someone else pay him.
Got to see that Samsonov can actually do it though.  He's looked good so far, but it's only been a few games, and the Caps have played better in front of him, and against weaker teams.


I certainly think Samsonov has played better thus far this year, but need some more games to really see how he will fare in the long run.

Imo, Holtby will be the starter until/unless he REALLY starts fucking up.. Like, he already has, but you know what I mean.. Only 6 games in. But a couple more shellings and who knows. They seem to give their vets a pretty long leash. Hope he snaps out of it.

It was in the middle of Trotz’s 2nd season here, taking notice of how the Caps could bring a total, 60 minute, physical game, annihilating their opponent, THEN, next game, play a completely soft, slow, lazy-minded, embarrassing game, having their ass handed to them, that caused me to pause.....


Searching for an answer, or answers, to make some sense as to why I was witnessing this phenomenon, about just what could possibly explain the reasons this Caps team can be the SAME GUYS, who can appear so  180°, different, from one night, to another.....AND......that it CONSISTENTLY OCCURS, but in random waves that seem to defy explanation!!


The first beginnings of a theory I had, about the Caps TEAM, were born! Although, it would need more time to test and see if it would manifest, to be fair, I started realizing that these guys, basically decide, as a group, WHEN, exactly they feel like SHOWING UP,...OR... when they’ll be OK with dialing it down a little!!


Trotz would FREQUENTLY mention, in post game interviews, about “some or our guys not buyin’ in”, “some folks didn’t bring their “A”, game tonite”, and other similar phrases!
SOMETIMES, Trotz would get pissed, you’d hear about him yelling in some locker room, at practice, or mid-game, and then SOMETIMES, Trotz’s message would work, for a short time, and sometimes it had no effect!


I’m talkin’ Barry Trotz, here, with a proven, tough cookie, no whining, no excuses, “next man up”, type of SUCCESSFUL pedigree!!  EVEN HE, couldn’t get the boys in line sometimes!


It has been well documented in my posts, especially over the last two seasons, screaming from the mountain tops, my frustration with paying $10K/yr. to Big Ted, for good season tickets, just to watch these guys play footsie, with their collective on/off energy switch, all during the season!


And I’m supposed to be GLAD, and grateful, about it!!


Well, although I love my Caps, I put my money, (or didn’t put my money), where my big YAP was, this year, by NOT renewing my tickets this year! The main reason??


Reirden!!! I gave him EVERY opportunity, last year, to prove he could HANDLE, and be in some form
of control, of this  UNDISCIPLINED team, that his predecessor, Trotz, had to pull teeth for, often, in order to get even small disciplinary changes to come about!


On a good tough day, Trotz, could be a teeth-gnashing Rottweiler, although rarely employed, you did NOT want to go there with Trotzy!!!


Rierden, on his toughest day, last year, seemed no more than a hummingbird, who told us of the nectar he’d found, when we won, and talked of the nectar that’s “coming soon”, when the boys will get it back on track!
I mainly view Rierden as the guy who Ted uses, to stand in front of the mic, and softly speak general, vague, game play rationalities, and well worn cliches, that ask the average fan to swallow the assumed falsehood that, soft-speaking and intelligence are inseparable!!
YOU’RE WRONG, COACH!!!

Of course, I still love NHL hockey, and the CAPS!!
I just don’t give you $10K, anymore!! I watch and scream and yell from my living room sofa now!!
Waiting for you to open a can of hockey whip-ass, grow some testacles, get a LION-type coach in here, change this rotting team culture, allowing me to return as a PROUD purchaser of your seats, and a RESPECTER, of our TEAM!!!

Damn right!!!   The real question is if Reidon is capable and willing to do that, or if he’s just a yes-man
