Decided i would just continue sanding drywall and paint the kitchen.

FFS Caps. When it’s a better night to paint kitchens than it is to watch hockey YOU doing something wrong!

While Laviolette is basically worthless, what we are seeing on the ice is more an indictment of the front office.  This is the 2nd oldest team in the league and it's going nowhere.  They've tied up money in tired, old vets like Backstrom and Oshie on their way out, an overrated guy like Carlson, have apparently not drafted that well and have made terrible trades.  How good would Vrana and Burakovsky look over what we've gotten in return?  Heck, Sprong has 3 goals in 6 games while we get another fading vet who won't be here next season anyway.  We're the Eastern version of the San Jose Sharks and you see what they look like.  Long, dark days are ahead in DC I'm afraid.

Totally agree except I'm not sure you can separate Lavi from management. Lavi forced the Sprong trade. For some reason he didn't like him and you could see the trade coming. Management has always been loyal to their chosen guys and I think that has always come from Ted.  Loyalty is an admirable trait, except if you want avoid prolonged downturns in sports.

This franchise has never, ever made the tough moves to trade, or core veterans go.  They have never benched core veteran players for playing poorly or without enough effort.

Oh well, at least we will get to root for Ovie for the next couple of years.

Meh, I don't think it is quite so black and white.  We don't know MOST of what goes on ...including with players and how they fit....or what trades can actually be made or not.  I don't think the Sprong/Mojo was a plus for this team, but you moved a player that wasn't working for you and got what you could for him...a guy you had success with before....for a SHORT TERM, which is all Sprong was.  The fact that Sprong (or anyone) did not fit is not necessarily the coaches or team mgmt fault.  They don't always work out in your favor, and the Caps are so hemmed in by the Cap that they have very little room to work with.  Yes that is mostly their own doing, but what are you going to do...let Ovi walk and not sign him?  Move Carlson and Backy and Kuzy and "pick up" some guys.  Every team in the league is trying to do that.  Try finding one good center much less two.

I think BMAC has actually done good things for this team several times with very little resources to work with.  I liked that they signed a true veteran coach.  Yes it is his responsibility to get the most of the players, but Lavi can't go out there and do the skating and scoring....so there is plenty of blame to go around, but as much whining as we here on these boards after a few losses (and I don't mean this specific topic or thread), can you imagine if they actually blew this team up and started over?  Sent Ovi to Vegas or WTF ever would want him?  Traded Carlson and let Nicky walk of with UFA deal elsewhere.  Then you start you team over and win 30 games a year.

The coach can only do so much.  He can only work with what he is given or can get.  You have some aging superstars on this team.  What can the coach do when they underperform?  Sit them...okay, to what end?  That doesn't really work with veteran players IMO.

I hear a lot of grief about how badly we draft and don't develop our own players, etc, etc, but you look at the history of this team and we've had some pretty successful drafts.  I'd say that Ovi guy is working out.  Backtstrom too.  John Carlson...grudgingly admit he has been good for this team. Yes all of these guys are now old.  But you aren't always able to draft, develop and then keep every player. And they aren't all Ovi's.
Ovi is probably one of the best draft success stories for the success of a team in the last 20 years.  He literally made hockey in this city.  I'm not surprised they are riding him for as long as they can, and good for them for making it work.

We've been burned a few times by bad trades.  They don't always work.  I'm glad when I see them at least try, but sometimes there just aren't any trades that make sense, so ....you don't.  I'm curious to see how the Vranna/Mantha trade works out in the long run.  For me, I'll take Big Tony over Vranna, for his size and impact.  Vranna a speed demon and exciting, but he never played any D.  Big Tony seems to be a bit more stable.  Odd that both had serious injuries after the trade.

Sorry...this should have gone in the boredom thread, cuase that's what's authoring it.

Some good points Rich.  I think GMBM has done ok - some good some bad.  He hasn't had much to work with in terms of high draft picks and a depth of prospects for trade stock.  I do think the recent Sprong/Mojo deal was a significant mistake but that was probably driven by the coach.  We weren't going to play him (for some reason) but I think we could have controlled him for a couple years?

Lavi has been disappointing. I generally share your view that coaches can't play on the ice and its the players that need to perform, but Lavi doesn't seem to consistently motivate the team and has let things coast - like the predictable power play, the poor faceoffs and the up and down goalie situation.  You can argue that he is just working with the guys he has, but I think good coaches figure out a way to make things better.

For instance, they could have changed out the special teams coach and brought in coach specifically for faceoffs.  They could have also brought in a different goalie mentor.

Regarding drafting, I don't give them credit for a brilliant draft of Ovi - that was a no-brainer.  I think the drafts over the last 5 or 6 years have been average at best.  Unfortunately, a lot of that is due to trading away picks, but I see a ton of young, fast, skilled players in the league and we don't have anybody that I am excited about.

So we are stuck for a while until some of our big contracts roll off and we can hopefully draft well in the next 2 to 3 years to start ramping up later.

I agree Lavi has been a bit of a disappointment...to me anyway.  Maybe I just had high hopes a "real" coach could make a difference.  I do think he inherited a team with not much wiggle room.  But, you have to work with what you got, so...
Realistically Cousin Brucey was probably the most successful coach with this team...except he could never get anywhere except great regular seasons and then he just sort of fizzled.  Obviously Trotz was ultimately successful with the Cup win, but the year before, hell earlier that season, we were all yelling for his head.  Hindsight and all...
I would like to have seen a little more house cleaning when TR was sent packing.  Start over with ALL new coaches. Give the HC the opportunity to select all his own staff and you have a clean slate with every coach and every player.  They all have to earn their spots.
This team now is just old and has some weak spots.  We still have a decent talented group, but they are underperformers sometimes.  Not sure how you solve that underperforming.
Goalie situation is not great, but man....letting Holtby walk was (a necessity due to salary) but a blessing in disguise.  He game was already declining before he left and it has not recovered.  IF one of these guys doesn't work out to be a real contender, we are going to be hurting next year as well.
I think we missed the boat on a couple guys and not making trades to shave salary, but when you are the one trying to dump salary, it usually costs you picks, and Caps have already emptied that cupboard too much.
I believe if they could have gotten a reasonable deal done, Kuzy would have been gone over the summer.  He has however had a pretty decent season.  He always has his ups and downs, but he's a point per game guy this year.

Anyway....I'm a lifelong Cap fan, so maybe I'm just used to mediocracy
