with Charra, that's 10 defensemen on the roster. Kempney is LTR for the year (I would expect)
They might carry 7 so.....that still leaves 2 men out, and that's not including "the Fever"

Was reading the other day that some teams are stockpiling d-men because the season will be more compacted and that would allow rotating fresh d-men in. Personally, if Jensen never saw the ice again I think it's "addition by subtraction".
I forget who, but I read one team was toying with going with 11 forwards and 7 defenseman.
Wouldn't mind seeing some double shifting of our top six forwards and situational use of d-men like Chara.

I don't mind this signing. Solid defence from chara is what we need and he'll help the pk (especially in playoffs when special teams are so crucial)
With all the back to back games with teams this year will cause animosity and I expect fights will increase dramatically. I feel like the Caps were the toughest team in the league last year and now with chara and Dillon for the full season, no other team is even close to as tough as Washington

I doubt we see more fights. In fact, I think the players will have an unwritten rule of no fighting this year. I'm not a big fan of Charra at this point. He has very little mobility and if he takes minutes/games for Ziggy and Fehrvary, I think that is a big mistake. Plus, the fact that Boston didn't want him back ought to tell you something...

You may be right, but the schedule is not quite, but almost all, "series" of 2-3 games in a row against the same team. We all now how chippy things historically get on a back-back, let alone a back-back-back. So, that unwritten rule may be torn up. If so, it's nice to have Chara taking some of that pressure off, especially off Willie.

Chara doesn't need to play every night. There will be injuries and guys will need rest with the compressed schedule. Boston let him walk because it's pretty hard to have your team captain and leader not be on the ice every single night. How can you be the leader of the team when you're a 5th or 6th dman. In Washington, he's not the leader of the team, Ovechkin is. If the day comes when Ovie is at risk of just being a depth forward in the league, he will no longer be with the Capitals and certainly not wearing the "C" for them.

Easy Canadaman. I don't think I am crazy or naive. Much to my disappointment, the league and the players have ramped down fighting and even hard checking over the last several years. The players finally realized that there is too much money at stake and I'll bet you a Canadian nickel that there have been plenty of locker-room discussions about not fighting. Just look at the stats.

It wasn't about politics. I was simply stating that there's a reason the caps can sign chara and there's a difference between them signing him and the Bruins keeping him. People here are trashing the move and I don't see why. It's a depth signing for min money. Fights will go up and the season will go on to think any different is absurd to me is all.

Also, I highly doubt the players discuss not fighting. Guys just don't have the balls to do it as often as they use to because there is basically no fighting in minor hockey anymore. Emotions will run high and these are grown men that will do anything to win. I'll bet you a "Canadian nickle" that fights will be up 20% min this year compared to last.

Meh On a more reasonable note..I think the logistics of running an NHL season is totally unrealistic.
One player o a team gets tested positive. End of.
There are too many variables in each and every team..... too many people invoved.

Hes >40, playing for 20ish mins, mostly paired with Dman who thinks hes playing forward in a no-hit
rec-league. Also his previous team had forwards that actually know that playing D is not just a "social construct". To add to that, injuries have left us with the Lollipop Guild whos combined bench & deadlift probably doesnt equal Charas.
Yet he still hits & plays harder than all the D (except Dillon). Not to mention, had more hockey IQ than all of em before he got drafted.
I doubt it is anyones, including his, preference to be logging this many minutes, but, with injuries & Orlov being a dumbass, and underperforming, we dont have a choice. But when at 100%, hes our best Dman
