Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov returns to the lineup after missing three games with injury

Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov is back in the lineup against the Canadiens. (Ricky Carioti/The Washington Post)

MONTREAL — Evgeny Kuznetsov will be back to centering the Washington Capitals’ first line on Saturday night after he missed the past three games with an undisclosed “upper-body” injury.

“That’s my first time when I miss the game by the injury since I get a few scratches [in 2014], you know?” Kuznetsov said. “It’s feeling weird, you know? But I feel sometimes it even gets you better. You get rest a little bit. You get extra practice, and you get a chance to watch the hockey from upstairs. … Some stadiums have better hot dogs. But it looks like I’m not going to try hot dog today; I know it’s very good place for food.”

Kuznetsov is Washington’s second-leading scorer with 21 goals and 50 assists this season, and just as he was before he got hurt a week ago, he will be between captain Alex Ovechkin and right wing Tom Wilson when the Capitals play the Montreal Canadiens. Nicklas Backstrom will then center wingers T.J. Oshie and Andre Burakovsky on a second line.

“Obviously, he’s one of the top players in the league,” Coach Barry Trotz said of Kuznetsov. “You miss his speed and you miss his skill. From a matchup side, you have a sort of two-headed monster with him and Backy. I think for the [opponent], it puts a lot more pressure on them. We missed him on the power play, we missed him five-on-five — he’s a dynamic player.”

Goaltender Braden Holtby continues to be “day-to-day” with an undisclosed “lower-body” injury, so Philipp Grubauer will get a second straight start after he made 39 saves for a shutout in the team’s 1-0 win in Detroit on Thursday. Pheonix Copley, called up from the American Hockey League on Thursday afternoon, will again be Grubauer’s backup netminder. Holtby again took shots in the team’s morning skate, but Trotz is opting for caution.

“We’re getting closer,” Trotz said. “You know how valuable your asset is, especially in net. We just want to make sure we’re 100 percent. I just said to Holts, ‘Once you get absolutely 100 percent, then we’re going to put you back in.’ But we’re not going to even go there in case something happened to Grubi, and then you’re putting in a guy that’s not at a 100 percent and then he gets hurt and your whole season can be in jeopardy. I said, ‘I’m not going to go there, so once your 100 percent ready to go, then we’ll put you as a backup or a starter.’”

According to Isabelle Khurshudyan, Kuznetsov will be playing tonight and on a line with Ovi and Wilson.  Backstrom will be back with Burakovsky and Oshie, and Eller will be back with Vrana and Connolly.  Chaisson will be in for Smith-Pelly on the 4 the line and Jerabeck will replace Djoos on the third defensive pairing.

Vrana is Burakovsky without as much experience so their may be hope, but he turns pucks over at the half wall all the time.

Whatever Maaco - Bowey was sent down when we picked up Kempny and the Czech I can't pronounce. But if it somehow a domino effect that e send down a defenseman weeks before we sign a forward, OK.

Whether you want to admit it or not, this team is leading the Metro because all the other contending teams have taken as much time off as the Caps have.

This myth that the Caps take more "time off" or coast more than other teams is just that -- a myth.

The reality of this season is that the Caps are really a middle of the road team that has been just a tad more consistent than any of the other teams chasing them.  That is why they are in first place.

Welcome to the boards.

Re-read [or perhaps just read] my post.  Who said the Caps take more time off than anyone else?  I just said I'm sick of this team taking nights off. So no is one claiming any supposed "myth".

The Caps are 3rd in the division in goals for, 3rd in PP%, 4th in PK% and 8th [dead last in the entire NHL] in shots per game.  So perhaps it isn't such a stretch to wonder how this ridiculously inconsistent team in leading what many have called one of the best divisions..

I agree that we are a middle of the road team.  Whether or not we have been more consistent than the others in the division would have required us to watch all the other teams.  They may be where they are because thats as good a team as they can be.  This team is capable of more than it delivers on too many nights.  That was my point.

On a side note, if you could pick your first round opponent, who would it be?  The likely choices are Pit, Philly or Columbus, assuming NJD finishes in the 8th spot and gets Tampa.

JWC, I've read quite a bit of these boards, and it sure seems to me as if this team gets dumped on as often lazy and disinterested (not just by you, by any number of posters), with the inference clearly being that a GOOD team wouldn't act this way, or at least, act this way such a large percentage of the time.  Or is the real inference I should take that the posters here are a generally grouchy lot who would gripe the same way if they were rooting for almost any other team?

It's not just the posters here who rag on this teams inability to put 60 minutes together.  Did you watch the Detroit game?   Roenick was blistering the desire and heart of the Caps, and he's just one of many analyst who have this year and for the last several years. So, it's not just us posters here.

It could also be that this Cap team does lack the ability to put together 60 minutes and we [myself included] are a grumpy lot - they aren't mutually exclusive options.

my prediction for the 3rd: this team pisses away a 2 goal lead because they are to focused on getting Willy his first career hat trick

AFAIC Gruby is our number one goalie at the moment. I really want to see Holtby get his mojo and confidence back and retake that spot, but as of now we have a new #1.  Gruby is a calm beast.

I used to do that back in the `80s.  Great fun! Huge rush!  Dangerous as hell.  I had a crazy instructor that pushed way faster than he should have.  My third jump was freefall. By the time I had 15 jumps in my log I nearly died 3 times.  On the day of my first jump we were watching the  instructor with the open hanger door behind him. We saw an experienced skydiver hit the ground not 15-20 feet outside the hanger door simultaneously as his parachute. He fractured his back in a few places and was hauled out in an ambulance. He was experienced with 2000 jumps.  Then one of the students in my class jumped and refused to follow directions or make a single turn. She disappeared on the horizon and ended up in a tree. Had to be rescued by fire department. She almost hit a power line too.  At 20 jumps I decided the risk was too high.  I did get to fly the Ferrari of parachutes once. It had a forward speed of 35 mph and could turn on a dime. I jumped it in very high winds, roughly 35-40 mph (wind picked up after we went up) The airport was going by at lightning speed as i approached, then I made a 180° turn and I was struggling to get back to the airport. Then as I reached the airport the wind gusted and I was flying backwards even with the fast canopy.  i ended up landing in a ditch going backwards.  Not dangerous, quite funny actually.  One time I was freefalling and had packed my own parachute. Turns out I packed it incorrectly and it opened MUCH too fast and I almost came completely out of the harness. i was barely hanging on by my elbows and the backs of my knees.  Had I fallen out of that harness I would have lost both my main and backup parachute.  That thing opened so hard I was sore for a week or two. Even my teeth hurt.  My socks rolled down to the tops of my sneakers. I packed it like they taught me for students that DO NOT freefall. They do not fall very fast. I was falling at 110mph and it was like hitting a wall when it opened.

Trump got plenty of money.  He will use some of it to build a wall. Obama had limitations on how certain moneys in the budget could be spent, but he ignored it and spent the money on what he wanted. Congress did not do a thing about it.  I think that is why Trump did not veto the omnibus bill. He will get what he wants. Besides, these is so much more going behind the scenes that will change the country and the world forever.  2018 will be an awesome year.

BTW, there was some money allocated to the wall, half of which was marked for maintenance of current wall, and if memory serves about $1.7 billion for the new wall.

ETA
OK, I just double checked. There is 1.6 billion allocated for the new wall.  $445 million to provide levee walls along the RIO Grande, $186 million for fencing in the same area, and another $400 million for repairs of existing walls.

Interesting schedule this week.  The Pens, Flyers, and Jackets all have now played one more game than the Caps, and so it will remain throughout the week, with all three teams playing their next game a day [or more] before the Caps play their game in hand.  So it's as if, game by game, the Caps will be able to see what the other 3 teams are doing and know their situation before they take the ice.  If the Caps can win their next 3 games, at least two before the shootout, they can close out all the teams they are competing against for playoff spots except for Pittsburgh, before the last week of the season.
