Capitals are getting goals from players not named Alex Ovechkin
(https://img.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src=https://img.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_960w/2010-2019/Wires/Images/2018-03-17/AP/Islanders_Capitals_Hockey_48250-bf7fa.jpg&w=1484)
Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin assists as right wing T.J. Oshie scores on New York Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak in the first period Friday. (Alex Brandon/Associated Press)
As the Washington Capitals put on a goal-scoring clinic in back-to-back wins Thursday and Friday against the New York Islanders, nine players combined for 13 goals. Alex Ovechkin, remarkably, didn’t score any of them, and that might have been the most encouraging part for the Capitals.
Ovechkin’s NHL-leading 42 goals have been a lifeline for Washington as the team has weathered lengthy slumps by its other top forwards. Ovechkin’s production has been a constant, accounting for nearly 20 percent of the Capitals’ goal output. But with the playoffs just 11 games away, Washington is riding a four-game winning streak entering its key Metropolitan Division matchup at the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday, and more importantly, the Capitals may be rediscovering the balanced scoring they boasted a season ago.
“I don’t think anyone in here is worried about [Ovechkin] not scoring,” forward T.J. Oshie said. “But it is good that we have other guys stepping up and other guys feeling the puck and other guys getting rewarded for their hard work. That’s important. We want confidence throughout the lineup offensively going into the postseason here, so that’s something that hopefully we can get on a more consistent basis.”
After 19 games without a goal, Oshie has three in his past two games. Rookie Jakub Vrana went 25 games over more than two months without a goal and was even a healthy scratch for a handful of games, but he has three goals and two assists in the past seven games. After Andre Burakovsky had a miserable start to the season, suffering a broken thumb just nine games in, he has seemingly found his scoring touch with five goals in his past 16 games. Washington also got goals from three defensemen — John Carlson, Matt Niskanen and Dmitry Orlov — over the past two games.
Expectations should be tempered — the Islanders are the league’s worst defensive team — but a more even distribution of goals was a fixture of the Capitals’ success last season. And even with the off season departures of top-six forwards Marcus Johansson and Justin Williams, the team was never expected to be as top-heavy as it has been. Ovechkin has twice as many goals as the team’s next leading goal scorer, Evgeny Kuznetsov. In a potential blow for Washington, Kuznetsov suffered an undisclosed upper-body injury late in the second period Friday, when he was slashed and then collided awkwardly with the boards, crunching his left arm. Coach Barry Trotz didn’t have an update on the severity of the injury after the game.
If Kuznetsov, (21 goals, 50 assists) has to miss any length of time, production from players not named Ovechkin becomes even more important. The Capitals have just a two-point lead on the Pittsburgh Penguins for first place in the division.
“For the most part this year, we’ve had some guys go on long dry spells, and Ovi’s been the consistency to our equation of winning hockey games,” Trotz said. “We’re going to score on the power play, or Ovi’s going to score or a chip in from someone else. But there’s been some dry spells, and right now everybody’s sort of getting on the mark here.”
Some lineup tweaks by Trotz seemed to trigger the offensive outbursts. Before Thursday’s game in New York, Trotz reunited Oshie and Burakovsky with center Nicklas Bäckström, a trio that hasn’t played much together this season but enjoyed success in the second round of the playoffs a year ago. In the small sample size of the past two games, that line has scored two five-on-five goals, and the Capitals have taken 60 percent of the shot attempts when those three have been on the ice together, according to Natural Stat Trick.
In the second game of the back-to-back set, Trotz made a few lineup substitutions because he felt some players had “fallen off a little bit” and he wanted to “create some competition within the group.” Depth forward Alex Chiasson had been a healthy scratch for six of the past seven games, and Trotz played him over forward Brett Connolly on the Capitals’ third line with center Lars Eller. Chiasson assured himself at least one more game in the lineup with a three-point performance, including his first goal since Jan. 2.
“Made a statement not only to me but to everybody else that ‘I want to stay in the lineup,’ ” Trotz said.
“Maybe with two or three minutes left in the third, I kind of sat there and gave myself a tap on the back for the hard work and keeping the positivity,” Chiasson said. “This time of the year, for a guy who’s been in and out of the lineup lately, to come up with a performance like that, I’ll be ready to go next game.”

Thread title says Islanders at Caps.
Are those lines accurate. If so I'm a bit surprised Stephenson is out of the lineup.

Actually it said "Islanders @ Capitals @ Flyers". I forgot to remove the Islanders when I pasted it from the last game.
No one is posting a known lineup for the game. Two sites had projected lineups, both guessing the same lineup I have for now. I'll update as more data becomes available, only this time I will wait until intermission to make corrections. I often end up missing the first few minutes of the game updating the damned lines since for some reason the organization can't see fit to post the correct info ahead of time.
-
Grubauer is starting for sure!
-
Interesting lines posted by Isabelle Khurshudyan on her Twitter feed. I hope I don't have to change it again. I'm sure Trotz will switch things up a fair bit during the game.
-
Will we get the Caps or the Craps?
-
I'm not liking that Grubs has been on his ass three times already. We're lucky they did not score a couple already.

Capitals ‘for sure’ expect Evgeny Kuznetsov (upper-body injury) back by the playoffs

PHILADELPHIA — Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov won’t play on Sunday against the Philadelphia Flyers, as he’s considered “day-to-day” with an undisclosed “upper-body” injury, but in good news for Washington, Kuznetsov seems to have avoided a long-term injury. Coach Barry Trotz said that he “for sure” expects Kuznetsov back in the lineup before the playoffs, which are 11 games away.
“I like the terminology of ‘day-to-day’ much more than ‘month-to-month’ or ‘week-to-week,’ ” Trotz said. “That’s terrific news, but we’ll see where he is tomorrow. But the terminology of that sounds good to me.”
Kuznetsov is the team’s second-leading scorer with 21 goals and 50 assists. He seemed to injure his left arm late in the second period of Friday night’s game between the Capitals and the Islanders. Kuznetsov was slashed by Thomas Hickey and then collided awkwardly with the end boards. He’s played every game the past two seasons, and the two games he missed during his rookie season (2014-15) weren’t because of injury. Washington is expected to take a cautious approach with his health, especially with the team sitting in first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Thanks! :hearts:
Those feeds are as good or better than my $220/month Comcast feed on my big flat screen. It may be time to cut the cord soon when these streams are reliable. I have little use for Xfinity/Comcast Cable besides the Capitals games. The feeds are 60fps too.
-
Goalie interference is now 3-4 feet outside of the crease? It gets more and more crazy, Mrazek wasn't even touching the crease at all. He was well outside it.

Yeah,I gave up on Game Centre a few years ago, 'cos of all the blackouts. ::) Didn't make any sense to pay when I only got to see about 2/3's of the games and had to go to a free link for the rest anyway.

That was probably the best “fight” I’ve ever seen Oshie have. . .
That ain’t saying a lot . .

I hear ya. The only chance we have to do anything in the playoffs is if Holtby gets hot. Grubauer isn't good enough. They have to get Holtby out of his slump and that isn't going to happen if he isn't playing.
. . .
. . .
. . .
Oh believe me, this is a direct attack on the retards that say “just blame the goalie”
There is little evidence to support that maybe two other goalies at best, could have gotten this video game roster and system into the playoffs .
Now I’m not speaking ill of Grubby, he probably will be a great goalie. . . But to win with this shit show. . . You have be the elite of elite
-
If only I could post a rally fat....
-
That was probably the best “fight” I’ve ever seen Oshie have. . .
That ain’t saying a lot . .
It was. I was impressed!

:18z:

Nice fucking goal

Pretty goal!

Now that's how you play a two on one! Good job.

Mrazek has been good today.

After rally fats were only mentioned... ;)
 Yeah, the threat was enough.
-
Stunning ineptitude trying to get out of our own zone. :O=
-
crap, looks like I didn't miss much today
-
Nice work from Burakovsky and Smith-Pelley. Not a good team today.
-
big two points to lose too
-
Wow. Have it on the wall. Keep passing up the gut. Sheesh. I need another drink.
-
crap, looks like I didn't miss much today
Where ya bin'?
Ovi scored.
-
Anyone seriously think we won’t be one and done this Spring?

Anyone seriously think we won’t be one and done this Spring?
You can't ever tell. I don't put much at all into the regular season either way. All the years they were favored. Id rather not be. Get in and catch fire. We'll see.
Scoar!
-
Nice shot from Dylan.
-
Rally fat, rally fat, rally fat.
-
Anyone seriously think we won’t be one and done this Spring?
We need Holtby to get red hot real quick or we are done.
-
Bad choice on Burt's part...
Especially passing to a guy with stone hands.
-
We need Holtby to get red hot real quick or we are done.
We aren’t good enough even if he stands on his head.
-
Rally fat, rally fat, rally fat.
Stfu
-
Rally fat, rally fat, rally fat.
I think you frightened them a little too much..... :P
-
I wouldn't place this loss on Gruby, but I was very concerned at how many times he ended up on his backside. It had to be a record. We sucked all around.
-
Stfu
exactly, that guy is such a prick. Who ever thought the rally fat was a good idea anyway?
this team would be better off if they missed the playoffs this year, and it wouldn't take much in this division to do that
-
Did anyone else notice that Holty's issues began around the time he did that stupid Geico commercial where he couldn't stop or do a damned thing right?
-
thought it was a night game
You saved yourself some aggravation. :poop:

For all the Carlson lovers out there, especially Alta. He is now the highest scoring dman in the NHL. Klingberg is playing now and could over take him but four the moment its Carlson.

Gotta admit he :poop: in his soup less this year!
He has been fine offensively all season. Even defensively he hasnt been that bad. He is by far our best dman. Might even be the best in our zone. Thats how bad our dcore has been.
-
Did anyone else notice that Holty's issues began around the time he did that stupid Geico commercial where he couldn't stop or do a damned thing right?
Yes I did. If I remember correctly Nick sucked when he did a Geico commercial too.
-
Yes I did. If I remember correctly Nick sucked when he did a Geico commercial too.
it seems to me, who ever on this team that does a commercial for geico plays like crap for a season
