Blue Jackets-Capitals Game 5: Can Caps keep it rolling and take the series lead?

Game 5

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Washington Capitals
Series: Tied at 2-2
Saturday, 3 p.m. ET, Capital One Arena
TV: NBC

Top story lines

Special teams have been key: Washington has scored seven power play goals in four games, which included a goal from T.J. Oshie in the second period of Thursday’s 4-1 win in Game 4. More crucial to the Capitals has been their penalty kill; after giving up four goals in eight power plays to Columbus in the first two games of the series, it has held the Blue Jackets scoreless on power plays each of the past two games. Washington had to kill just two power plays in Game 4, controlling the puck and showing more discipline than it had in its first two games of the series.
“I think the first couple of games there was a ton of special teams so the five-on-five you don’t get that flow, you don’t get that momentum. I think [in Game 4] we were rolling the lines over,” forward Tom Wilson. “You feel the puck more, you get into it, you get some hits and everyone is feeling a little bit more comfortable. In the first period when there’s four or five penalties some guys don’t even go on the ice.”

Caps must improve at home: Washington returns home after knotting the series with a pair of road wins in a difficult environment in Columbus, which included one of its most complete performances of the season in Game 4. The Capitals must find a way to play better at home if they are to advance; they have lost five of their last six postseason games at Capital One Arena, which included pair of overtime losses to the Blue Jackets last week and three losses to Pittsburgh in last year’s second round.

Braden Holtby is locked in: After being benched in favor of Philipp Grubauer to begin the series, only to be called upon late in Game 2, Holtby has responded with a pair of promising performances. He was especially solid in a 4-1 win in Game 4, which marked the first time since November that he had given up just one goal in a game. Washington’s defense also picked it up with a cleaner showing – Columbus had just two power play opportunities, while star forward Artemi Panarin was held in check – but Holtby did his part with 24 saves.

“I thought we were strong in front of the net. I think they did a really good job of creating traffic, not wasting shots. Most of the shots they got had some sort of net presence or something like that from the end zone standpoint and I thought our guys did a great job of blocking shots, tying up sticks, limiting deflections, making those plays that can become dangerous less dangerous by battling and being full committed,” Holtby said. “All six of them and our forwards to in those positions I thought did a great job of that. We know we’re going to have to do more of that to succeed in Game 5.”

Players to watch

Nicklas Backstrom: The veteran forward posted five assists in the first three games but all of his scoring has come off the power play. Washington needs more from him in even-strength situations and capitalize on Columbus’s Alex Wennberg’s absence from the lineup. Washington received more production from its top line– including goals from Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson – but could still use a spark from Backstrom and the second line at five-on-five.

Seth Jones: Jones wasn’t among the finalists announced for the Norris Trophy — given to the league’s top defenseman – but he remains capable of altering this series with his two-way game. Not only does Jones offer physicality in the back-end (15 blocks and nine hits in the series) alongside Zach Werenski, but he’s also proven that he can produce plenty of offense – he scored a crucial goal in Game 1 and has taken seven shots over his last three games. He’s also become more of presence in the locker room – Blue Jackets Coach John Tortorella said this week that Jones had taken to mentoring Werenski – and his leadership will be counted on as Columbus tries to win its first playoff series in franchise history.

Yes, I hope Caps didn't loose a sense of urgency. There no second round first you loose first. Loosing two games is easy one lack of efforts, other lack of luck.

I hate that they forced this game away from the local channels. I hate NBC.  They lost the Formula One race coverage this year. Now ESPN is airing F1 and have more knowledgeable Europeans calling the races.  Hopefully NBC will lose the NHL AND the Olympics one year soon.

:dildo: behind the glass.
ETA:  Oh wow! Penis is not inside the glass today.

So classic.  Give up the puck and then Holts lets it leak in.  Lack of home ice advantage is killing us!

You know the worst part about this turnover? He carried it into the zone fine, stopped up, tried to get too fancy and make multiple plays and two guys just out worked him. Then shorty leaks through. He should of dumped it or made a smarter decision with the puck. Again this is not the regular season.

Also good afternoon all, we've had some good hits and stuff tonight but I'm still worried here.

Too bad we shit the bed on that shortie. Bad giveaway by Ovi and goal Holtby probably should have stopped. Not sure if he was thinking pass. Carlson actually played it well and covered the pass. Other than that Holtby was solid. Can't make those mistakes.

Happens.  Sometimes Refs call penalties early in hopes of keeping things simmered down, then back off later, hoping to let the players decide the game.

We're shortening our player rotation more than Columbus is, both the forwards and the defense.  Could catch up to us later in the game.  We just don't have the depth of playoff-quality players I guess.  And after the season it COULD get worse if the team goes all out to try to resign Carlson.  But what choice do they have?  Who would replace his minutes next year if he leaves?  As I understand it, there's going to be precious little out there on the bullion on the FA market EXCEPT Carlson, so it's likely he goes all the way to UFA and someone is going to give him a boatload of money.

From the time I typed that I thought we picked up our game a lot.  But there are a lot of missed passes that could have given us a lot of opportunities.  Stephenson was great on Thursday but not nearly as good tonight. The 2 on 1 with Beagle was a great example.  He made a nervous play.  We are doing ok (better than Columbus who can't make a decent line change) but not as solid as Thursday.

I admit, however, I overstated in my post.  I've NEVER done that before.  LOL.

Those extra minutes from shortening the rotation are catching up with us, maybe.  Of course, if Columbus shoots their wad and it's still 3-3, maybe we can still figure out a way to pull this out.  But you have to shoot at the net to score.

How do you allow a team to come into your barn and completely dominate you for a key third period?  I'm just shaking my head that a game that we held slight control of for 40 minutes has become so one-sided.  That's all about heart and balls and we don't have them.

Columbus shortens some of their bench too. Not as much on forwards, but on D. Jones/Weirenski or however you say his partners name play A LOT. I'm not implying we aren't short shifting, just that I think your reaching a bit saying that Columbus rolls all their players. They haven't this entire series, Seth Jones especially has been on the ice the most of any player in the entire series.

Well, you're right in that Torts didn't even put his fourth line on the ice in the 3rd period.  But besides the big stud Jones on defense, the minutes for all their other d-men are very balanced.  Ours aren't.

I'm not entirely disagreeing, only pointing out that they do some of the same. Also I don't think it's been a huge factor (fatigue) this series. We don't lose because we are tired, we lose because our guys simply don't have a playoff gear. Far too often. You see it when Nisky and Oshie make a play deep and out hustle CBJ forwards, and then watch others like Carlson or Ovie in our own end circling around staring at the play not fighting for loose pucks. To them the playoffs are surviving, not setting a tone. It's why this board is so negative. We know this drill already. Good games (like Game 4) are more so because the rest of the guys play to the identity that our hard workers try to set.

But that period was such a stinker mentally that imo we don't deserve to win shit. Even if we do, no confidence from it. No confidence from this games result regardless of what happens.

Stop buying the media hype. Trotz is not the fucking problem. You could put anyone in that bench and see what they say and it won't change the mentality. It's the core that needs to say something. I watched the CBJ have a late chance at the end of the third on a break and during it Ovie went from barely forechecking to slowly gliding into the bench. If I was on the bench I would be YELLING at Ovechkin to "SKATE AND CHANGE DO YOU WANT TO BE A LOSER?" Nobody has the confidence to do that. Ovechkin needs to be told he sucks. He needs to be told to GET INTO FUCKING GEAR.

All of them do. But if a coach does that (Hunter) what happens? Fired. You guys don't seem to get Trotz can't be an asshole because our group are fucking babies. Like I'm literally sick of this. Like as far as I'm concerned tie game late in the period and you've been playing like dog shit and your okay with the laziest change of all time? It isn't that Ovie can't hustle, it's that they don't care, they are overwhelmed the playoffs are just WAY too much for them. And until they the players find that gear, or we replace enough of them to change it, it's same ol same ol. Trotz has been an stellar coach imo. Stellar. He's done everything any playoff coach could do with this group of quitters.

Stop buying the media hype. Trotz is not the fucking problem. You could put anyone in that bench and see what they say and it won't change the mentality. It's the core that needs to say something.

I didn't say he was the problem but I don't see him as the solution.  It's not like his playoff record is so stellar to use your word.  I think there are lots of coaches who are better able to motivate.  I agree that the players are the players but a little fire under their asses wouldn't hurt.

I think your misunderstanding what I'm saying.

Trotz is a fire under your asses type of coach. Did you see him Coach in Nashville? He is known for yelling and letting players hear it when they are bad. I don't think you understand that zero coaches change this. Not just because of the players. Because our coach is NOT ALLOWED to yell at our players. Ovechkin has a shield on him, the last coach to give Ovechkin a hard time left the NHL entirely after disputes with the player. Remember when Bruce got hard on Ovie? Let go.

Management and Ownership have chosen to protect Ovechkins pysche over allowing coaches the freedom to do what they wanted. I promise you, if Trotz could yell at Ovechkin he would. He isn't allowed to.

Like why even ice Ovechkin there? Man. Watching him just stand at the circle, and then literally skate in circles as he plays loose zone defense and doesn't battle for the puck at all. Just looks for quick deflects out. Board battle PLEASE. Even in your own end. THE GAME IS ON THE LINE, THE SERIES IS ON THE LINE. Ugh. I'm just so sick of seeing this shit. Every single player should be held accountable for every single shift they have. That is how it works. That is how you get it done in the playoffs.

Also Alta, your totally right. That is my issue with Carlson mostly is that he has a tendency to get out worked the moment you put the puck in his feet and start to battle for it. He falls more than he should, he may not be Mike Green levels and he can still shoot the puck/play offensively even if he gets hit. But we need more players willing to go to the dirty areas, and with the skills to succeed in them.

The loss of Joel Ward honestly was one of the biggest losses to this club. He was literally the definition of the exact type of player this team needs more of in spades.

last few minutes I had it on the radio, bout a 30 second delay. I'm neither excited nor disappointed. I'm not really looking forward to the Caps winning this series, they don't have the talent to win round two. It might be a good contest if this squad had some juevos, but alas, too few of them do to make a difference

Our problem isn't talent. Our problem is the rest of our game. Poor decision making, lack of effort and heart and not enough physical play.

Too many good dmen in the league for Carlson to win a Norris. He will get some votes. I'm not really surprised at the 3 finalists. Hedman and Doughty are the best dmen in the league. Not sure I would have had Subban as the 3rd. I was thinking Seth Jones, Jossi or Pietrangelo for the 3rd guy. Glad to see guys like Karlsson, Burns and Keith arent finalists.
Keith completely fell off the face of the earth this season.

If Djoos can't be trusted to play more than 10 minutes in an OT game like this, then put somebody else in.  Maybe try Bowey.  He's well rested.  They have to do something -- they hardly used Orpik during the OT period, I imagine because he's slow to begin with and at his age he only has so much in the tank any more.  They can't just kill Niskanen and Carlson.

The top 4 in TOI in the playoffs is Seth Jones with the most. And our dmen are 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Kempny gets a regular shift 5 on 5 but doesnt play on special teams. Orpik is limited a bit 5 on 5 but he kills penalties. Djoos is very sheltered. I understand why. He gets muscled off the puck easily. Not sure Bowie is the answer. He can handle the physical play but doesn't move the puck as well. Jerabek might be a better option but he is pretty soft in the defensive zone too.

Now I see Bowey just the opposite.  From what I saw when he was playing, he moved the puck and passed it out of the D-zone as well or better than any of our other defensemen.  Where he looked to me like he had a problem was along the walls, and as you say, it wasn't necessarily that he was outmuscled.  He didn't seem to be able to figure out how to position himself to win board battles; he was always on the wrong side of the puck and had no leverage to keep possession.  All during the season, when Carlson or Niskanen had the puck along the boards a lot of times the opponents would lurk, hoping to pick off an errant pass -- and we saw Niskanen and Carlson make plenty of them.  When Bowey had the puck along the boards the closest opponent always engaged him immediately to strip the puck away.

Boweys problems getting the puck out if the zone weren't because he can't make the pass. He just wasn't quick enough in his decision making. Being paired with Orpik didn't really help him. I saw too many times during the regular season when Bowey had the puck in the defensive zone corner and Orpik was standing in the opposite faceoff circle around 60 feet away. Bowey was forced to eat it. I like Bowey better than Djoos. I don't really think either are ready for the NHL playoffs. I do think Bowey is going to be a good dman in this league in the near future.

Regardless, we need DefenseMEN. . .not more and more of the oh-so-trendy fourth forwards to move the puck to the other team.

I’m afraid you are going to have to wait for that to come back around. If it ever does. Having several defensive physical Dmen has gone the way of the enforcer. It’s all about speed and transition these days and it wins (see Pittsburgh Penguins). Until a team wins it all with brute force nothing will change.

Actually it already is.   The Hens went and got one of the best enforcers oil the game to add to there Defense,. . . (who at 6'7" isn't fast). . . and Boston has one in Krug and the other 5-6 are Defensive Dman or 200ft with a focus on D first players, . . . Tampa only has one in Stalman with 3-4 HOF caliber shutdown D, . .  Vegas has Miller and even Schmittys,  turned into a 200ft/sutdown first Dman.

This trend puck moving/transition fad were still trying to catch u, to is about three years old, and teams are starting to move away from it.. . most importantly the teams we are trying to catch are moving away from it.  The longer we praise and convert the likes of Carlson, Bowerey, Djoos, Orlov JJ25. . . . the teams that don't are gonna stay ahead of us and continue to beat us.

I don't mind having one or two offensive dmen but I'd prefer the other 4 were excellent defenders. In today's game dmen have to be able to skate but that doesn't mean they can't be good defensively.
I'm like DC and I like old school dmen. I'm starting to accept puck moving dmen. Why can't a dman be a stud defensively and be a puck mover. DC would rather have Lewington because he can hit and fight.
