Capitals mailbag: When will Tom Wilson’s suspension appeal be resolved?
Expect a decision next week on Tom Wilson's suspension appeal to a neutral arbitrator. He was suspended 20 games on Oct. 3 for an illegal check to the head. (AP Photo/Nick Wass, File)
Through 15 games, the Capitals are 7-5-3, and while they’ve been playing better of late, Coach Todd Reirden said he would describe the start to the season as “inconsistent.” In this edition of the mailbag, readers ask when there will be a resolution to forward Tom Wilson’s appeal of his 20-game suspension for an illegal check to the head and where he’ll plug into the lineup when he is eligible again. We also examine the team’s play as it approaches the end of the first quarter of the season, when we might see a Alex Ovechkin-Nicklas Backstrom-T.J. Oshie line again and defenseman Dmitry Orlov’s start to the season.
Wilson was suspended 20 games by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Oct. 3, so his appeal has now dragged on for nearly six weeks, understandably frustrating Capitals fans. After NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman upheld the suspension on Oct. 25, Wilson had a second appeal hearing with neutral arbitrator Shyam Das on Oct. 31, so a decision is expected sometime this week. It took Das 15 days to reduce the suspension to Nashville forward Austin Watson, so it’s not taking unusually long. Perhaps unfairly to players, the process is designed to take a long time; when Dennis Wideman got his suspension for abuse of an official reduced from 20 games to 10, he had already sat out for 18 games. Wilson will miss his 16th game on Monday, and the 21st game of the season will be on Nov. 21 against Chicago.
I expect him to play as soon as he’s able, and considering the Capitals have struggled to fill his first-line right wing role in his absence, I would think he’ll plug right into the top six. He’s more than behind in game action, but unlike players who miss time with an injury, Wilson has been able to skate and train during these six weeks. It might take him a couple games to be as sharp as some of his teammates, but he hasn’t missed this much playing time in four years. He’ll be shot out of a cannon for that first game back, and depending on the lineup configurations at the time, I could see him immediately returning to his place opposite Ovechkin.
Washington has tried five different wingers with Ovechkin and center Evgeny Kuznetsov, and that top line has either been too defensively vulnerable, or it’s struggled to produce at even strength. It’s possible Ovechkin and Kuznetsov will be split by the time Wilson’s suspension is over, but he’s also had success complementing Ovechkin and Backstrom.

I'm surprised Siegenthaler is scratched. He looked good Friday night
-
Key words "Tentative Lineup".
Carlson is a game time decision.
Top line is 8-19-77
2nd is 18-92-13
Holtby starting
Rest is tentative.

With everything we learned last year it's WAY too early to worry about this team and it's understandable that they can't play with the same intensity they did during the run to the Cup, BUT...
Coming out night after night like they don't give a fucking shit is getting a little bit annoying. Kuzy started the season like a house on fire but he's back to his old bullshit of passing up chances on the doorstep to look for the "perfect play." And, frankly, Nicky looks like a guy who is saving himself for the postseason, pulling out of any contact the comes near him. Finally, Eller has not been good at all this season and if our strength is 4 lines of centers, right now we are lucky Boyd looks great because the other three all look like shit.
-
That was one of the worst periods of hockey I've seen in a long time.

Could not agree more. I thought they were lackluster against CBJ but this is a whole level down from there.

Yep. Intensity in November has some leeway, but playing stupid, neigh mentality handicapped to the point of them deserving to wear pink bicycle helments instead of blue hockey helmets
and equally lazy is inexcusable even at the post-Cup party.
But, you’re spot on that Boyd is our best center, and I’m beginning to think Keller’s 15 minutes of fame is over, probably Marchant had something to do with that . . .

Pretty lame game.

Agree completely. It’s hard to speculate that he’s anything more than peaked and over achieved.
Hell, as a “third line center”, has even broke 50% faceoffs for a year? Or compasted with 30 goals?

Basic fucking hockey. Can't clear the puck when they are on the PK. Their PK will keep them from going anywhere this year unless they fix it. Getting Willy back will help but these guys can't keep fanning on the clear. We have played 2 shitty power plays in a row and given up 2 to each. Just fucking atrocious.
-
Arizona played last night while we rested but you'd never know it by the way we are playing. We sucked against Pittsburgh and got a lucky win, played awful against CBJ and got a much deserved L, and are horrendous tonight. Still very early but this ugly hockey is not something to be proud of.
-
These guys hit nobody at all, just wave at the puck and let guys stand in front like statues. They're just really slow and BORING right now and it doesn't look like Riordan can crack the whip.

So the "lowly" Coyotes have a better record than the Caps.
Final Score: Coyotes CARED - Capitals DIDN'T

Well, while on the surface it seems ludicrous, but if the choice of Beagle and two low profile consistent Dman or Carlson and Dowdy for the same price . . . I’d take Beagle and the two Dman.
But this is the Caps, Monumental Entertainment and GMBetaMale we’re talking about, the jersey sales and the goal scored is worth more than the goals not allowed
-
no, unlike others here I don’t push buttons for the heck of it. This team has a better chance at replacing Carlson with what’s in the system than they do getting a consistent face off winner

OK so the truth is that you really are that uneducated about the game.
And yes you do try to push buttons. You try to push mine all the time. Even when I try to be civil with you. You refuse to stop trying to push my buttons.
I know you guys like to take pokes at me. That's fine with me if it's in fun but with you it never is.
When my wife was in the hospital with a heart problem people here were apologizing for taking pokes at me. Rush even tried calling me. I told them to continue and that I didnt care. Everyone here gave positive comments when I commented about my wife being hospitalized. I know no one here knows us but it was a very difficult situation for us and the comments were really appreciated. But one person didnt make a comment offering support. Just could not put his differences aside. Not even for one fucking night. Because of our differences on a stupid message board. Really says a lot about a person.

Lmao are you for fucking real?
just so we're clear, this ^ is trying to be civil??? and how is not berating someone about their opinion

I'm fucking done trying to be civil with you. You showed your true colors. And you continue to refuse to acknowledge it.
Did I not make a sincere comment when you posted about your snake bite? Did you think I was being sarcastic? Was there a reason you couldn't do the same?
-
I'm not sure how I feel about Rierdon switching up the lines to go back to the old 8-19-77 line. My fear is that 92 is still a little bit immature and might see it as a "demotion" -- taking the other top player off his line. If I were Todd I would not be fucking with the lineup that won the Cup because if the team does go south he's going to look like a dickhead. This team will only go as far as 92 will take them. He was their best player during the Cup run and he has to be their best player consistently for them to be elite. He was for the first couple of weeks but he's been having more of the old "hissy fit" stuff of late:
- too much overpassing
- bitching at the refs when he doesn't get a call
- not working hard enough on the defensive end
A young guy with a world of talent and a brand new 8 year $62M contract is a recipe for disaster if guys like Ovie don't ride him hard. He needs to step up -- the past 2 weeks have sucked.

How do you reconcile these two posts Maaco? It seems that only one hockey view is allowed by you.
AFAIC I am getting tired of this abrasiveness that you brought with you when you first arrived here. You improved a little for awhile, but now it's just getting old, it's distracting, and it creates stress in the heart. I hope someone pulls the plug on this.

You've been uncivil to me since the very first day you joined us ridiculing me about picking Holts in ArJ's GWG poll while conveniently skipping over the post I made explaining my tongue in cheek pick as that all happened in the exact same GDT. You accused me of "pounding Carlson into the ground" yet when I asked for you to quote me I was ignored. There have been a couple other things where you accused me of saying something and when I asked you quote me you couldn't. Last season you actually admitted you intentionally push my buttons, yet some how it's me. Now you are butt hurt because I didn't directly respond about your wife being ill. On top of that you are so delusional you can't even see how you berate everyone else with a different opinion about the game. You need psychological help in a bad way. I can be very civil, to a point. You push beyond that point I will let you know. If you haven't figured that out no one can help you.
-
That was a brutal game. Really disappointed in our effort in the first period and then we just couldn’t finish our chances in the 2nd and 3rd periods. This was a game we should have won and now we have a tough road trip coming up. We may be lucky to win one game. Things could get ugly fast.

The mess on the lines with Willy gone just shows how good of a forward he's become. He's gotta be smart about hitting for the next two seasons to let this habitual tag come off

I have discussed issues with Alta with you and nothing has ever been done. I have tried to be civil with him but he refuses. I talked to him via pm trying to put our differences aside and he just flat out refused. He has never once tried to have a civil conversation with me. Instead he would rather try to push my buttons or mock me. And there is no way to deny it. Do you actually think his actions are OK? Do you realize that he attacked me the very first day I had ever posted on the other site and he has carried that with him here. I even commented to you that I was disappointed that he couldn't put his differences aside after I did so for him. Funny thing was that you didnt seem to even know about Alta's encounter with a snake until I told you. I dunno I thought I was doing the right thing when I wished him well. Like I said I was willing to put our differences aside. Apparently he wasnt willing to do the same. And yes it bothers me.

Anyway a pretty meh game. No one really looked impressive tonight. Pp sucked pk sucked. 5on 5 men. Holtby was pretty average. They looked pretty flat. And a tough road trip coming up.

Sure was tough to watch, 4Caps.
The last two games of a five game home stand, with no back to backs, plenty of rest, and they just go flat. Go figure, but it’s starting to smell familiar!
I just realized that I was feeling about the same way, at this exact time, last year, at approx. the 15-16 game mark. I believe we were just over .500, and there seemed to be not just one thing, but MANY issues that were affecting the team. So many different, underperforming facets of the game, that it was hard to determine where to start with correction.
The similarities are almost uncanny. Bad D, 5 on 5 goal production was extremely low, PK and PP not doing well, and less quality goal tending. (Yes, Holtz is underperforming right now, and he’d be the first to tell you, regardless of some decent game saving saves! He’s also been Swiss cheese on a few, too)! So much is eerily similar to this time last year, IMO.
Anyway, plenty of blame to go around. With the two earlier wins this week, I was hoping it was an early indicator that Rierden was moving the team in the right direction. Obviously, not yet! I’m not discarding the idea, but I’ve shifted back to the neutral, wait and see mode.
Nearly everyone on the ice looked like they were very FLAT. Both physically and mentally. Appearing not very interested in hustling. Again, wasn’t this also similar to last year!! Then we heard in the media, that Trotz had handed the entire locker room a good ass chewing, that was unusually heavy!!
If memory serves me right, we then went on a VERY successful road trip, bringing back some good standings points, and a winning attitude! This took place around games 18-20 or so, or certainly within the first quarter of the season. It went from hopeless, to hopeful quite quickly I recall!
Mind you, I’m not attempting a pep rally style post here. Also not going gloom and doom either. Rather, pointing out the similarities, and noting what a potential litmus test this upcoming road trip actually IS!
A real potential eye opener type of litmus test! Especially on the coaching staff. These next games will be approaching the infamous 20 game mark!
Will Rierden have the ability to lift this teams attitude? Can he get the boys to start buying in? What about the goaltending, moving forward, without Mitch Korn anymore? My honest answer is “I don’t know, yet!”
The waiting to see part SUCKS, for sure, as it’s an unknown! I guess it’s only a notch better than had we returned already from this road trip with a real bad showing!!
Well 4CAPS, there’s My two cents!

If Kuzy is to immature, then he needs to grow the fuck up and realize that not only last year was last year, but as long as #19 is here, he will always be the number #2 AND second best center regardless of the lineup card. While he’s popular and gets a few points, he’s simply not a 200ft center.
The more this season goes on, the losses of Wilson, Beagle, and Chaisson are exposing the lack of depth on the roster. Backstrom, Stevenson, Oshie. DSP and Boyd can only do so much to make up the sloppy and morbidly idiotic play of every one else, and drag them along at the same time
-
If there is one thing that I have learned about arguments on the internet ( or in real life)......... Neither side is ever at fault LOL.
-
Rush I think your analysis is spot on. As I recall last year, after two terrible losses on the road to Nashville and Colorado which occurred at about the exact same time as now, actually I just looked it up and the loss to Nashville occurred on November 14 and the loss to Colorado occurred on November 16th, the Caps turned it around. So I am still hopefull for this season, I think getting Willie back will help both on the PK and even strength play. I think the lines will become more stable and that will help. Also I think we miss Orpik on the PK and we should be getting him back in 4 more games. I think Carlson’s description of the Caps play in yesterday’s game as being blah is perfect. I am worried about this upcoming road trip though, the first three games at least are going to be very tough and the Caps will need their A game to win. A performance like yesterday’s will result in 3 more losses.
-
Look where it is coming from. I'm not sure if he is trying to ruffle feathers or if he really thinks that way. I hope he is trying to just ruffle feathers.
Your continuing to quote/comment on something/someone you're supposedly "done with" seems like what you really want to do is have a confrontation? :clown:
On a side note, sorry to hear about you getting snake bit Alta!! ??? I imagine that's some painful shit.. Saturday I was told their was a coral snake out in the hedge, so I rushed out there expecting to point out it was actually a king snake.. Nope, fucking coral snake. Tried to kill his ass but he was too quick. :-(

I think getting Willie back will help both on the PK and even strength play.
I only saw the last 10 minutes, but I notice they gave up 2 more PP goals??? WTF is wrong with the PK? I know they miss Wilson, but it seems like they can't stop anyone, anywhere on the PK this year.. Are they last in PK %??

They are missing Wilson AND they couldn't resign Beagle AND Eller has gotten off to a mediocre at best start this season AND Reirden has been experimenting with playing offensive forwards on the PK at times. The intersection of everything adds up to a PK that isn't in the same

Ah, Beagle is missing as well.. Hadn't thought about that! I guess 2 strong killers down can disrupt the apple cart.. I've not "noticed" Kuzy being a liability on the PK, but again I've not been seeing all the games either.. Just noticing the # of PP goals we seem to give up most nights..

The PK is not a priority for the organization . . . more goals for them, more goals we need to score.
That leaves a roster that is mostly to "skilled","talented","special", to work their ass off in the weight room, film room, and PK even if they won't score goals. It will be interesting to see just how long the organization will let the season go on like this before they start bringing up the likes Greitsch, Walker, and Obrien to start taking roster places from guys who think that winning 16 makes them elite and untouchable. . .
Whenever it is, dont be surprised if its too late

Your continuing to quote/comment on something/someone you're supposedly "done with" seems like what you really want to do is have a confrontation? :clown:
On a side note, sorry to hear about you getting snake bit Alta!! ??? I imagine that's some painful shit.. Saturday I was told their was a coral snake out in the hedge, so I rushed out there expecting to point out it was actually a king snake.. Nope, fucking coral snake. Tried to kill his ass but he was too quick. :-(
Hey Mick!
Two years of my childhood was spent in Florida. That would be second and third grade. I live in Jacksonville, and went to Orange Park elementary school, where we had "coral snake sightings", All the time. Most of them were corn snakes which can be similar.
After getting disappointed several times as kids, me and my buddy, who is a little more of a nature boy than I was, (he would pull armadillos up by the tail, as they were digging down in the ground), we came upon a REAL coral snake. It was really slender and fast, and not very long either. My buddy caught it with a stick, and brought it to the teacher, as we did not know it was a coral snake, yet!
I had never really seen any adult freak out so much as did our teacher that day! She ran down the hall, screaming, and got the principal, as we just stood there in the class. The principal made the entire class, including myself, leave, except for the boy that was holding the snake. It was like an evacuation.
Then I think they got a box and gave it to some park police guy or something I can't remember. Looking back on it I thought it was a little bit of over drama as I got older, as I learned that the size of a coral snakes mouth is so small it's actually hard to bite adult human, although there are venom is extremely toxic! I don't claim to know this is fact just something I've heard along the road of life. Can you shed any light on the truth of this?

I've not heard good things about coral snakes, never seen one though. The problem with poisonous snakes is the juveniles haven't learned how much venom to inject so they usually just dump it all. The one that bit me was about a foot long, a juvenile. As poisonous snakes go, the copper head/water moccasin we have here is fairly mild. They don't usually cause tissue necrosis. But Christ is it painfull, and two months latter my foot is still swollen. I grew up here and this was the first copper head I'd ever seen. Been bit a few times by black/king snakes, didn't really hurt but they don't have venom. Such are the perils of catching snakes. Out in the Shenandoah valley there is still the occasional eastern diamondback, but they've been mostly eradicated. Not totally, but mostly.

Glad you’re doin better with that bite! I’ve heard that it’s worse to get bit by a baby/juvenile snake. Wouldn’t wish that on anyone, buddy!
I’ve seen two coral snakes when I was in Florida. They are unique looking! Really slender and sleek. There was a little rhyme we had memorized about the coral snakes color sequence, when we were kids, but I can’t remember anymore.
When do you expect full recovery from the wound, Alta?
