Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov to miss third straight game with “upper-body” injury
(https://www.washingtonpost.com/resizer/7iK27RLyQfW1hQ5l2ktiQfmoSgQ=/1484x0/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/BY4DBNAHHU6O7NQQZXW3HOFM4A.jpg)
Evgeny Kuznetsov will not play Thursday night against the Red Wings. (Amber Searls/USA TODAY Sports)
DETROIT — Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov will miss a third straight game with an undisclosed “upper-body” injury he suffered last week. He was on the ice with his teammates again on Thursday morning ahead of Washington’s game against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena, but Kuznetsov didn’t participate in line rushes.
“He’s real close, as you can see,” Coach Barry Trotz said. “He was jumping around and all that. At this time of the year, we’re just going to be cautious. I expect him to jump in real soon here.”
The team has a scheduled off day on Friday, and it’s unclear if Kuznetsov will be ready to play against the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night. Washington has a two-point cushion over the Pittsburgh Penguins for first place in the Metropolitan Division, and this trip against the Red Wings, Canadiens and New York Rangers — teams well out of the playoff race — is an opportunity for the Capitals to secure the division’s top postseason position.
Getting Kuznetsov back in the lineup would certainly help. He is the team’s second-leading scorer with 21 goals and 50 assists; he also plays on Washington’s first power play unit and is often the one making the zone entries go smoothly. Before Kuznetsov appeared to hurt his left arm against the New York Islanders on Friday, he was centering the top line with captain Alex Ovechkin and winger Tom Wilson. Without him, center Nicklas Backstrom moved into that spot, and the ripple effect has rookie Travis Boyd as the third-line center with wingers Jakub Vrana and Brett Connolly. Since the start of the calendar year, Kuznetsov has nine goals and 23 assists in 31 games.
Goaltender Braden Holtby wasn’t on the ice for Wednesday’s optional practice, and the team said he was taking “a maintenance day.” He was back on the ice Thursday morning, but the Capitals had a third goaltender — video coach Brett Leonhardt — suited up, too. Trotz indicated later something is nagging Holtby.
“Yeah, he just tweaked something,” Trotz said. Philipp Grubauer will get the start in Detroit, but that was the plan going into the week.
Holtby played the full game in Tuesday night’s 4-3 win over the Stars, but Dallas forward Remi Elie collided with Holtby halfway through the third period, and Holtby was initially slow to get up.
“We’re just trying to make sure he’s okay,” Trotz said. “He’s doing fine. You saw, he was moving around fine and took the majority of the shots.”
Despite the work put in by Holtby during the skate, the Capitals called up Pheonix Copley from Hershey and he will serves as Grubauer’s backup tonight.

Changes are coming to NHL’s goaltender interference reviews
(https://www.washingtonpost.com/resizer/gRGAwmzRmab8wCvqppXQTuWnvH0=/480x0/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/QI7TW4FMDI6D7MX3GK7FROZZSU.jpg)
Capitals Coach Barry Trotz on the current interference review method: “It’s no different than a student marking their own papers.” (Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)
Amid criticism of inconsistency with goaltender interference reviews, the NHL will soon have its hockey operations department in Toronto make the rulings whenever a coach challenges a goal. The aim is to have the “situation room” handling the goaltender interference reviews by the time the postseason starts.
“It will be an improvement to the extent that the managers and the coaches were looking for consistency,” Commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters at the conclusion of the general manager meetings in Boca Raton, Fla., this week. “Hockey operations, we have to wear whatever decision is made anyway.”
Goaltender interference has become the NHL’s most controversial rule of late, and teams’ frustration with it seemed to reach a boiling point when Edmonton Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot sounded off last month. “There’s just no consistency and I’m [expletive] sick of it. It’s [expletive] ridiculous,” Talbot said after a review went against the Oilers.
“I don’t think anyone knows what’s goalie interference and what isn’t,” Pittsburgh Penguins Coach Mike Sullivan said earlier this month.
Unlike video reviews for offside, which tend to be more clear-cut, goaltender interference is subjective. The current system has referees on the ice looking at iPads and reviewing a goal they had just called as good or no good in the moment. During that process, the game referees are speaking to hockey operations about the review, but the ultimate decision still rests with the on-ice officials. With the upcoming change, the referees will still be involved in the decisions, but Toronto will make the final call, perhaps making the decisions more uniform. Bettman said that one of six retired referees will take a seat on a nightly basis in the situation room for goaltender interference calls.
“There’s some referees who are more established and more sure of themselves, and they won’t reverse their calls,” Capitals Coach Barry Trotz said. “They almost say, ‘That’s the way I saw it, and that’s the way it is, so live with it.’ Others get swayed by what they see or maybe the crowd or another coach or how the game is going. It’s no different than a student marking their own papers. Let’s have a nonemotional person, who has no skin in the game and is not in an emotional environment, to make those calls, and I think you’ll find it’ll be more consistent. It won’t be based on emotion, and it won’t be based on confidence of a referee, if you will, to reverse the call or not reverse the call. So, I just think it will become a little more black and white when you have someone who’s very neutral — not that the referees aren’t neutral, but someone who’s not in the heat of the battle — and a little bit removed.”
The league said this week that through more than 1,000 games this season, there were 170 combined challenges from coaches and the situation room for goaltender interference, and the NHL disagreed with just a small fraction of the calls made by the referees. The call on the ice was confirmed 119 times, and the initial ruling was overturned 51 times.

So since I ragged on Dylan earlier today in the other thread, Let me congratulate him for his 600th game tonight.
Go Big John.
Go CAPS.
I just found out I am picking up my son and daughter in law at the Airport tonight and their flight just got delayed. :O=
I was just about to head home (total opposite direction from Reagan National) and prep for the Cap game. Now I am sitting at work waiting to here if they made their flight and what time I have to fetch them. I'd have to leave my house about 15 minutes prior to game time to get them in time (assuming they are on time). So likely I'll sit stay at work only to learn they will be delayed another hour.

That's too bad. There is always UBER !!!!
Tell them the old eyes don't work so well driving at night. Safer to UBER.
Good luck!
ETA
LOL! I just caught your custom title. Very funny!
-
Yeah, Uber from Reagan to Warrenton (well Marshall actually) might be pricey...there are four of them.
They gave me a grandson this year so I have to cut them some slack....even though I'm surely not nearly old enough to be a grandpa.
It was supposed to be my wife and pickup at Dulles at 8. Now it's me at Reagan at 9:15. Ugh.

Good evening

I hate it when the game is on nbc
-
What a play by Eller.
-
Smith-Pelley needs to sit down. He can't suck enough.
-
Another game against a shitty opponent where we come out totally not ready to play. Ridiculous.
-
Way to go to clear the crease boys. ::)
-
Good call by the refs. Easy, but still a good call.
-
Way to go to clear the crease boys. ::)
Goaltender interference. Pretty obvious
-
Wowzers! Didn't seeO'Helloran giving that. ;D
-

Its not that we aren't prepared. We are an average team.
-

Yeah. I thought so too, but it's O'Helloran.....
-

At least we don't need any condoms behind the glass.
Hi All!
-
Are you shitting me? Wilson is the only one penalized? Why are we not surprised.
-
Are you shitting me? Wilson is the only one penalized? Why are we not surprised.
It’s a joke. If 43 is out there he’s going in the box.
-
I listen to these announcers and realize how lucky we are to have Joe B. Craig? Not so much. But love Joe B.
-
Are you shitting me? Wilson is the only one penalized? Why are we not surprised.
I wasn't a bit surprised. In fact, I expected it when I saw he was involved. Seriously, I did. Very sad that the NHL is so inept, biased, and partial.
-
Can this be the last year of the Burakovsky experiment?
-
Can this be the last year of the Burakovsky experiment?
We can hope so. The kid shows flashes of high end skill punctuated by long periods of softness and passivity.
-

It’s the subzero hockey IQ that troubles me.
-
Can this be the last year of the Burakovsky experiment?
I hope so, we talked about this last year. Consensus was three years to earn a spot then trade him. This is year 4
-

We are not shitting on you.
-

I think we are call in agreement that Burakovsky is a failed experiment. It actually pisses me off when he goes on a bit of a hot streak. Everyone thinks we have something special then he plays like an idiot the next 20 games.
-
:poop: :clown:
shitting someone is different than shitting on someone. I don't think any of us are German
-
ArJ, I got some primed brass I need to through out. Given current events you think it's safe to just through it in the regular trash? I know it won't hurt anything, just don't a visit because of noises coming out of the garbage truck

Weirdest Goal of the season!

You don’t think they look disinterested? I do.
-
We are not shitting on you.
I’m going to chalk this up to you misreading my post and resist the temptation to shit ON you.
-
-
Nice shift, wasn't even a PP
-
How stupid IS Niskanen? Guy lies down in front of him and he slaps it into him?
-
How stupid IS Niskanen? Guy lies down in front of him and he slaps it into him?
if you aim for the face they tend to not want to lay down if front of the shot
-
Did Trotz move DSP up with Nicky and Ovie?
Cancel that. I see Willie is there. May have been a middle of a line change thing.
-
This has the feel of a scrimmage.
-
And now a common refrain: this team sucks.
-
This has the feel of a scrimmage.
a scrimmage where everyone has already earned a spot on the team
-
Pretty average so far. :-(
-
Perfect! A 5 on 3 to a team all but eliminated from the playoffs.
-
5 on 3. 2 minutes. Not good.
-
unfukin believable
-
The call on Oshie was questionable but they had to call the Eller high sticking penalty.
-
Question: if we are already defending a 5 on 3 and commit another penalty, what happens?
-
Good kill even if we can’t win a face off in the D zone.
-
Sweet PK boys!
-
Question: if we are already defending a 5 on 3 and commit another penalty, what happens?
Guy goes in the box but penalty doesn’t start until a guy comes out of the box.
-
Guy goes in the box but penalty doesn’t start until a guy comes out of the box.
Thanks
-
Question: if we are already defending a 5 on 3 and commit another penalty, what happens?
It remains a 5 on 3. I believe the 3rd penalty begins after the first penalty is over.
-
Even Grubs is getting bored........ :raspberry:

every now and then they stack em in like cord wood..

We’ve had 1 PP and they’ve had 4 with a 5 v 3.

Yes. Correct.

Two words: Dan O'Helloran.
-
Roenick has the Caps figured out and calls them out. Says they are disinterested and not working. I blame both the coaching and the team leadership for a poor effort so far. They will probably win, but they should be dominating a weak team at this point in the season,

I said that and Maaco disagreed. I’ll go with JR.

This only confirms what I've been saying for 3-4 years now. This team needs a new captain. Until that happens no coach change will make a difference, though I do believe Trotz has done all he can here. Trotz will still be a good coach somewhere else, where the on ice leadership hasn't gotten lazy
-
The drop off from Kuzy to Eller is staggering.
-
wow, yet another pipe from Dylan
-
That was fukking horrific.
-
Nats vs Mets is on
-
DSP is just a waste of a sweater. But so many are. Vrana has sucked for a while.
-
Nice job Gruby!!!
-
Absolutely no pride in themselves. It’s embarassing.
-
Conno!!!!
-
:10z:
-
Good shot. Lucky to get that.
-
FINALLY!
-
Kuzy is so critical to this team it’s not funny. You really see it when he’s out.
-
it's pp time
-
Well it could be worse...you could be waiting at the airport at 9:51 for an arrival scheduled for 8:45...
And nothing to do but listen to the game on the radio. And circling the airport trying to find parking in the cell phone lot that is full....and knowing you still have an 1:45 drive ahead of you and need to be up at 5:00am Tomorrow.
AND YOU HAVE TO PEE!!!!!
But at least the Caps scored!

all the way in, there are some big hollies up against the retaining wall, just walk around for minute staring at your phone

Well my passengers have arrived. Peace out peeps
Hopefully Caps manage to finish this
-
Caps appear to be wanting to give this one away.
-
OMG, I want to wring a few necks, including Ovie's. Pathetic!
-
Why are these DB announcers Ovie-bashing?
-
It takes very little fo fluster the Caps. They can't even stick handle like a child when they get nervous.
-
Why are these DB announcers Ovie-bashing?
NBC. nuff said!
-
Fugly but we’ll take the points.
-
So glad that's over.
Great job by Grubs.
-
wow, I'm very surprised that ended 1-0
-
Fugly but we’ll take the points.
I have no problem with a 1-0 win. Nice to see them tighten up defensively. However it was only Detroit. Grubauer played very well. Maybe the best game I've seen him play.
-

+1000
It's not like we didn't do our best to let them back in it.

You saw that as "tightening up defensively" I want whatever you're smoking.

ArJ, I got some primed brass I need to throw out. Given current events you think it's safe to just through it in the regular trash? I know it won't hurt anything, just don't a visit because of noises coming out of the garbage truck
Ahem

Sorry, I was busy and missed this post.
First choice is send them to me. What are they? Otherwise, spray them or soak them with a thin oil. WD-40 in tiny amounts works. Within 24 hours they are safe to dispose of.
ETA
That little bit of oil on the primers will destroy them.
-
Ahem
I also have equipment to deprime them quickly.
-
Kuzy is so critical to this team it’s not funny. You really see it when he’s out.
I agree completely. The PP is just not the same without Kuzy and we miss his creativity on offense. I expect to see him Saturday against Montreal and I hope to see him back with Ovi and Wilson and Backy back with Oshie and Burakovsky.
-
If you don't give them to me, be sure to dispose of them within a few days of adding the oil. It's not easy to kill a primer permanently. They are sealed tight and lacquered. One the oil dries they could possibly fire again. The thin oil will penetrate enough to prevent ignition at least temporarily. You could also fire them depending on how difficult they would be to chamber.

We really didn't give up a lot of high scoring chances and our defense did a very good job grabbing whatever rebounds Grubauer gave up. When Detroit had possession in our end our mnan to man coverage was solid. Yes the team played well defensively. Although it was Detroit. Our problem in this game was that we generated no offense and didnt have much puck possession in the offensive zone. In the defensive zone we were fine. Just because Detroit had modem possession time and more shots doesn't translate to poor defensive play. We were good in the defensive zone but we sucked in the nuetral zone and offensive zone.
-

they are empty cases with live primers. I can easily deprime too, never done live ones though. Several years ago I was given a bunch of 10mm hand loads from the second owner of them. Not the guy that made them. I pulled some random bullets to weigh the charge, they were safe, so I took them to the range. Every third one would not extract, so I pulled the bullets of the rest to reuse on fresh brass. I realize how difficult it would be to set off a primer in lose trash, but because of events in Texas I'm now hesitant to just toss them.
That same trip I bought some new 10mm at the range, they all extracted fine and the extractor on that piece looks fine too. That's why I blamed the brass

I understand what they are. I just wanted to know what caliber.
If you had trouble extracting it was likely one of two things. The brass was not resized before reloading, or the charge was too high and thus bulged the cases upon firing.
I've deprimed live brass quite a few times. Just be sure to wear safety glasses and don't have anything flammable or explosive nearby. Worst case the primer goes off and you get a small blast headed toward the ceiling. i've never had one go off. Go slow and steady. It takes a lot of impact to set off a primer. Again, wear safety glasses and keep your face away from the area above the press. Make sure the brass does not need trimming. This can cause problems too. This is not normally needed for straight walled handgun brass unless they've been reloaded a few times already.

Normally Id love a 1-0 game between these two. . . .but that was pretty brutal.
1-0 games suck when its just two teams sucking at offense and not two teams playing high intensity, aggressive, smothering D.
The Caps have to win games like that for them to have a chance in a series, but I haven't seen much to support they have the acumen, IQ, and guts to not pout about individually not scoring. . .Its easy to say "they're pro's, have faith,. Rock The Red Kool Aid Ohhh Yeah", but the data that they will, or are able to is simply not there. . .
The Wings are bitter/sweet . . . a combination of Murphys Law and the waining Euro-calm is disturbing and resulting the the worst record since before i was high school at least, but next and and the years after,. . .holy shit. We saw Svenchnikov last night, (now thats the type of Euro we need!), not only dod play great, slammed Willie, but fought Dalton Prout to a draw this year, with 22 its in AHL after 51 pointss last year and they have several more similar types in the system. . . . it could get . . . .FUN,
-
I thought the Wings outplayed them pretty much all night. Grubs just didn't let any of their mistakes end up in the net.

We saw Svenchnikov last night, (now thats the type of Euro we need!), not only dod play great, slammed Willie, but fought Dalton Prout to a draw this year, with 22 its in AHL after 51 pointss last year and they have several more similar types in the system. . . . it could get . . . .FUN,

Yep, thank god it was the Wings..
Ya if we played a better team we would have been crushed.

Being a Detroit fan you must enjoy watching Kronwall. I know he is getting up there in age but I wish we had a guy like that. Love his signature hit at the offensive blue line. How many guys have been Kronwalled over the years.
