Defenseman Brooks Orpik a ‘game-time decision’ for Capitals game vs. Stars
(https://www.washingtonpost.com/resizer/YZwFOcRHajwMCzMkR8cvAMWbWSI=/480x0/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/QBOE5ODWX46MDFWVN2EZPVWOSI.jpg)
Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik is a game-time decision for Tuesday’s game. He was out Sunday with a “lower-body” injury. (Joel Auerbach/AP)
Washington Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik, who missed Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers with an undisclosed “lower-body” injury, is a “game-time decision” for Tuesday’s contest against the Dallas Stars, Coach Barry Trotz said. Orpik participated in the team’s optional morning skate Tuesday, and if he were to draw back into the lineup, he would probably do so over Jakub Jerabek.
Sunday’s game was the first Orpik has missed this season, as he has averaged 19:46 on ice per game. He also plays the most minutes on Washington’s penalty kill. The Capitals take just 44 percent of the even-strength shot attempts when Orpik is on the ice, but his absence seemed to be felt in front of the net: The Flyers scored two goals with deflections in a 6-3 victory. Orpik, the Capitals’ most physical defenseman, typically is responsible for clearing bodies out of the high-danger area in front of the goaltender.
“There’s bite missing from our lineup, especially on the back end,” Trotz said. “We’ve got some good people back there, but they don’t have that natural bite that Brooks does. Brooks doesn’t possess the skills of a guy like Christian Djoos, and Djooser doesn’t have his skills, but when you put them together, they seem to work. There was two areas: on the ice around the net, that bite that you need especially with teams that are going to your net hard, and then probably more in the room. When our team needs a little tightening, it either comes from me or it’s going to come from your leadership, and I really feel when Brooks wasn’t in there, our room was way different. It was way different, so he’s a big piece of the intangible stuff you can’t put numbers to that help us go forward. It was noticeable. No question.
“That’s why probably a staff and a team have a bigger value for Brooks Orpik than fans or people that deal with numbers because you can’t really put numbers to that, unfortunately. I think if you could, then he’d do really well in those numbers, but you can’t. There was a big piece there that was missing.”
Center Evgeny Kuznetsov won’t play Tuesday night, missing his second straight game. Trotz said Kuznetsov skated on his own Tuesday morning and is expected to make the three-game road trip that starts in Detroit on Thursday night. Kuznetsov is the Capitals’ second-leading scorer with 21 goals and 50 assists. Washington’s power-play entries especially suffered without him.
“Kuzy’s gifted the way he can enter the zone and skate,” Trotz said. “It seems effortless when he skates and handles the puck. He’s got such a great feel for time and space, but he doesn’t feel the pressure. He’s so calm in those tight areas, that you’re able to enter with that speed and that high-end skill, so your breakouts and your entries are a lot better when he’s in the lineup than when he’s not, for sure.”

Hello all ..... not feeling too great, and no - its not because of the Caps play like normal. But I'll try to hang around and conversate with y'all for a while.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope it's not that wicked flu that took my entire family down for a month.
I hope you feel better soon!

"Doesn't really matter at all. I don't really care about that"
Carlson's response to the question about what it would mean lead dmen in scoring.
-
Somebody send me an Oshie bobblehead please.
-
Somebody send me an Oshie bobblehead please.
I was thinking the same thing. Sounds cool.
-
It's very odd seeing our boys in these jerseys.
-
If Carlson just lost his glove but it wasn't a slash by the new rules ... what was it??
-
It's very odd seeing our boys in these jerseys.
Don't like em, not one little bit.
-
Cool, so Boyd's another one who won't shoot the puck. Wonderful!
-
OMFG !!! Play like you actually think you deserve to get a paycheck
-
Without 92 the power play sucks. They can’t enter the zone.
-
Love all them lazy passes like they're isn't another team on the ice trying to steal the puck! Good work ethic right there!
-
Smith-Pelley isn’t very good.
-
Face it guys. This team is not very good.
-
Nice!
-
Backstrom having a great game.
-
On the bright side, we out shot Dallas 5-4. Wtf. That has to be a typo.
-
This is about as difficult a game to watch as I can remember. Does anyone even care on this team? I'm finding more entertainment reading the news.
-
I knew staying in the bathroom might have been a better way to spend the last couple of minutes of the period.
-
With Kuzy out they need a good game from Backstrom and Eller and, so far, Nicky has spent most of the time in the box or fumbling the puck. Very poor first period after the horrific showing they gave on Sunday. JoeB and Locker are creaming their pants over Kempny and he seems like a turnover machine who can skate to me. Burakovsky has almost a zero hockey IQ from what I can tell. He does the same thing over and over off the side wall and it leads to turnover after turnover. He's a nice skater with a good shot, but... so what?
-
That was a weak call
-
:77z:
-
That was supposed to be a TJ Oshie bobblehead???? No resemblance IMO.
-
:2z:
-
Cool ... O'Shie finally gave me a reason to return from my Facebook feed ....
And while typing that ... a flukie goal - which I'll take any time.
-
That was a lucky review . . . We usually don’t get those
-
I wonder what was said during intermission. It's a different team on the ice.
-
Jesus Willie must have all of the hits tonight
-
holy crap, they are winning
-
Somebody send me an Oshie bobblehead please.
they are for sale ;)
-
HOLTBUST !! :O=
-
they are for sale ;)
After seeing that one on TV I'd say it would be difficult to give them away. I did not see Oshie at all in that head.
ETA
Can you text me a photo of it?
-
HOLTBUST !! :O=
not much he could do with that one
-
Stars have 4-1 power plays and Ovie gets dragged to the ice -- a real horsecollar -- and no fucking call. WTF is that?
The refs in this league just suck balls.
-
not much he could do with that one
That's what we keep hearing. Lots of excuses!
It may be obvious, my attitude towards this team is not good. Same old lack of effort on a consistent basis.
-
HOLTBUST !! :O=
How do you figure?
-
:8z:
:pp:
-
The Greasemans definition of torque: when your standing in the shower, you pull back on that bad boy and your feet slip out from under you :P
-
How do you figure?
Holtby simply does not look like Holtby! He does not appear to have anywhere near the poise and composure we're used to. This game he appears shaky, timid, and I'll say scared.
-

I don't Know ArJ. The last 5 goals he’s given up have been 4 PP goals and one as the PK was ending and the 5th defenseman wasn’t back yet. If you want your goalie to play better ..... stay out of the f*n penalty box.

not that I care but did you see the non call on Marchand the other night? absolutely horrendous
-

Well he wasn't at fault on either goal so I dont understand the bust comment tonight.
-
Eller and Orlov combined to make that look like the fucking keystone cops.
-
Jesus Ben just took four players to school
-
OK ArJ - Holtby could’ve / should’ve had that.

Like I said, my opinions are admittedly tainted by a negative attitude towards the team right now. You know me, for years I cannot tolerate the lack of consistent effort displayed by the Caps, and it's eating at me again.

the 2nd goal was deflected right in front of the crease, not to many goalies can deal with those. That last one was a team effort
-
I think we are all frustrated about the lack of consistency by this team
-

That last one. Ugly turnover by Eller and some weak defense by Orlov. It was a sweet play by Benn though. I'd love to have that guy on our team.
-
Anyone still awake?
-
C’mon C-A-P-S. Isles are trying to help us out - leading the Hens 3-1. Could be a 4 point night.
-
We may have the worst D in the league when it comes to the simple ability to control the puck. We turn it over like it's our job. Kempny is really not an upgrade from Bowey from what I'm seeing. I'd rather get Bowey the experience since Kempny is a rental.
-
Detroit helping out too - leading the Flyers by the same score.
-
OMFG ... I come back to watching the Caps again only to see a clinic in shitty passing and zero effort. I would start fining these lazy assholes because it seems we've collected a team of individuals that only play their individual best when its a contract year.
-
Jamie Benn is a much better player than I’ve given him credit for. I know he’s not exactly unknown, but he isn’t one of the first names I think of when I name some of the best players in the league, but he should be.
-
Hey look, another fucking icing .... didn't we have a guy that we paid next to nothing, and still scored a nice number of goals for a 3rd liner) that would chase those down all of the time???? FFS
-
Heh Faska would of destroyed Hooks
-
Shit - a 4 on 4. Wasn’t it last year that went almost the entire year without a 4 on 4 goal?
-
Shit - a 4 on 4. Wasn’t it last year that went almost the entire year without a 4 on 4 goal?
I do believe you are correct.
-
I do believe you are correct.
There you go - bitch about no 4 on 4 goals and we get one!!
-
:74z:
4 ON 4 no less!!!
-
maybe if he played wing instead of D people may think better of his abilities
-
Isles 4 Hens 1 . Less than 2 left in the game.
-
That was a helluva shot ...... wow
-
maybe if he played wing instead of D people may think better of his abilities
You mean he doesn’t play wing?
-
maybe if he played wing instead of D people may think better of his abilities
There is nothing wrong with his abilities. You just have a hate on for the guy. He is playing well for us.
-
You mean he doesn’t play wing?
Carlson us playing well. He has been decent in the defensive zone too.
-

as I've said before, I don't hate him, I recognize his skill level. At least I don't get a hard on over him
-
alan May with some serious love for Tom Wilson’s game tonight.
-
Please . . . No shorties!
-
as I've said before, I don't hate him, I recognize his skill level. At least I don't get a hard on over him
Neither do I. You guys think I'm a Carlson lover. I'm actually not. I started defending him because he was getting ripped so much here.
-
that's bull shit. There is no way they've been selling out the last two seasons, there are way too many empty seats every night, no way that many people are eating that many tickets
-

We'll take it!!!

well that's odd, we started pointing out how bad he is because someone here seems to think he's a Norris candidate

What would this forum be without Maaco? He keeps us on our toes, rubs our face in it, and faces the battles head on. ;) Don't we have to have some respect for that? Who needs boring and total agreement!
-

Could be. Lady and I used split a full season pack until last year, when we went to about 5 of them and couldn’t resell most of the time
But yeah, any one can get a ticket, selling them is the hard part
-
Good win. Team played well for the most part. A few very shaky moments in the back but not bad without Kuzy. I thought Holts was pretty good most of the night. I think those that are complaining he doesn't look as confident are missing that he is trying to play as fundamentally sound as possible which is what he's been working on with the coaches. When that stuff is second nature again he can show his flash with the glove, etc. For now, having him stopping the bulk of the shots is good enough. A power play point blank, a double tip and a one v one with Jamie Benn for the 3 goals is not bad.
-
well that's odd, we started pointing out how bad he is because someone here seems to think he's a Norris candidate
Thats odd because you guys were shitting on him long before anyone ever mentioned Norris candidate. Especially you. There is no way you can say he won't get consideration for the Norris. He is the highest scoring dman in the league. Plays a ton of minutes and plays all situations.
I wouldn't vote for him. I'd pick Hedman.
-

You're talking early in the season. 74 was very much 714 the past few years. He's vastly improved this year. To his credit the 714 moments are even fading into the past for the most part. We rolled our eyes many times in the past at his play. You came in on the heels of that.

on the old site you directly accused me of "pounding him into the sand" yet when I asked for an example you were oddly quite, because I never did.

Shit, I turned it off.. Oh well, least they won. Can't wait till it starts to really matter!!

He had a pretty good season a couple years ago. He was dealing with injuries the past couple years. Trust me I've rolled my eyes at his play plenty of times including this season. I think everyone is pleasantly surprised at his play this year.
-

you're missing the point. You directly accused me of something I didn't do. It has effected your memory ever since

Ask yourself how this reply meshes with some of your past posts? I and others have been pretty consistent IMO with regards to the criticizing and praising his play. I don't see that anyone of us has unfairly called him out. He's always been a capable player. Now that he's improved his skills even further and largely eliminated his brain farts I don't think anyone would disagree that he's an excellent D-man.
I/We had good reason to rip him at times the last couple years and even early this year. I personally have no bias for or against him. I will call out or praise any player that IMO deserves it. I'm a very impartial armchair hockey critic. :P
From this post it seems you agree with what I just said.
-
you're missing the point. You directly accused me of something I didn't do. It has effected your memory ever since
Not wanting to gang up on you Maaco, but I agree with Alta. I recall the exchange he mentions and you never provided a single example of Alta "pounding Carlson into the Ground". I don't recall anyone doing that.
To me this entire unfair Carlson bashing meme is a fabrication that you are doing your best to keep alive.
-

Back to this game. I'd like to know what happened in the locker room and what adjustments and/or motivating words spoken that flipped the switch. They began to play much better in the second period. It was still very sloppy at times, but they were at least putting the effort forth and won the game. I think someone else mentioned this, but these guys should be fined for making no-see drop passes or passes straight to the opponents tape. Maybe one in ten of these actually succeeds. When it works it can make for some great highlights, but it's not worth the risk.

You guys are suffering memory loss apparently. You guys always take jabs at him. The qualude comments or even the 714 is actually ripping him. Not sure why you guys dont see it.

That was a big game to get by. We have more problems with San Jose and Dallas than any other Western Conference teams.
The next 5 are against lower-echelon teams. We'd better try to get as many points as we can there, because the Fowl/St. Louis back-to-back is no picnic, followed by Nashville. Then the last game against a NJ team that might be on the bubble to the very end.

That was a huge game for the Caps, it was a four point night thanks to the Islanders. The Stars have had the Caps number ever since they moved south

Maaco,
i'm not meaning this as an attack on you, but just using your quote as starting point: (well okay, the first part is directly to you, but the intent of my post was to discuss the Norris Trophy silliness)
Mostly I think you get the "Carlson Lover" tag as you do seem overly sensitive and usually respond to ANY criticism that 714 Johnny "Dylan" Qualude gets from any of us.
You don't seem as sensitive to complaints about other players. Why only stick up for big Johhny D?
I know personally, that I'm a smartass, and will stir the pot (as in the monikers above), but I really don't mean any insult or offense to the person posting (or the bong-hitter I'm ragging on at the time). I am here to discuss hockey and share opinions with other CAPS fans. I do not always agree with them, but that is part of the reason I'm here....for others' opinions and comments.
Also, speaking for myself; MOST of the negative spew regarding Carlson comes from YEARS past - before you were part of the boards here. Carlson deserved the names as he was obviously dense when it came to playing defense, and mostly that he was a seemingly uncaring, unmotivated, bong-smoking, dope of a marshmallow who was wasting his great potential to be a solid D-man for this team. FFS, use your size and at least F'n HIT the guy you just let waltz thru your crease and run down your Vezina winning goaltender you big Lummox!
That was the type of comment I would frequently yell at the TV when watching Johnny D play.
I will admit (and have said several times before) that Carlson has G R E A T L Y improved his play the last two seasons. This season especially. Both the offensive and defensive play. Along with the fact that I have entirely given up on him ever being a real physical D-man, he is much more tolerable to me.
So Carlson is not nearly as bad as the rap he still sometimes gets here, but most of it was based on his poor play historically and the rep he once greatly earned,
NOW....onto the real reason for my post.....this Norris Trophy Horse Crap:
I was mistaken in thinking that the Norris Trophy went to the ENTIRE LEAGUE'S best all-around Defensive player who demonstrates the best all around ability at the position. My argument here is the definition of DEFENSE MAN position.
John Carlson is a great point producing hockey player who happens to be a defense men. He is not ONE OF THE LEAUGE's best at the all around position of defense.
Yes he logs alot of minutes. Yes he gets ALOT of points. Yes he gets ALOT of hype, hence lots of Norris talk, but....
I DO NOT BELIEVE HE IS A GREAT DEFENSEMAN. I am not saying he is a BAD D-man. I am saying he is not one of the leagues great d-man
Scott Stevens was a great D-man. Rod Langway was a great D-man. Zdeno Charra was a great D-man. Okay, so I am stuck in the past, but we are talking about great D-men who deserve to be mentioned among the leauge's best.
John Carlson is a very very good hockey player but not a great D-man.
Maybe my argument in not so much against Dylan, but against what the Norris Trophy now considers to be the best all around d-man. Although, I did go look it up and it says:
"the National Hockey League (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hockey_League)'s top "defense player (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defenceman_(ice_hockey)) who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position"
(I am assuming the position they are referring to is Defense.)
w can the best all around defensive player in the league have 61 points yet a NEGATIVE plus/minus rating? How can a team with one of the best goaltenders, yet worst defenses in the league have a Norris candidate? How can a guy who no opponent fears playing against, or standing in the crease in front of, (or skating circles around, or running over, or skating on by...okay, I have wandered into smartass folly) be the best all around defensive player in the league? 61 points is ALOT of points. Yet you have been on the ice for more goals against? That's not a great defensive player, that's a great offensive player. That's a very productive hockey player (for both your team and your opponent ;D ). Hell, OVIE gets so much flack for not being a two-way player and he is a goal scoring FORWARD and his +/- is better than Johhny D's. Ovie has a rep for not being a two way player and Carlson doesn't? Yet Carlson position is DEFENSE (or at least that is what is says in the lineup)
I will grant you Carlson is one of the leagues best OFFENSIVE defensemen, but not agree he is the league's best all around player at the position of Defense....which IS still supposed to be the criteria for Norris candidates.
Why not mention Niskanen for Norris then? He is a +24 or something. Oh wait...he doesn't score enough to be considered a great defensemen  .
Okay, rant over.
No offense intended to you Maako, but I don't think Dylan deserves all the Norris talk he is getting. I think it is more about the successful marketing of John Carlson than about his play as a defensemen.
Really though, no offense....I was taking jabs at Dylan on purpose. Cause it's still fun. But seriously? Norris Trophy?
