Maybe it was cause we lost Schmitty to them, not that we could have afforded him long. I don't think he hasn't really lived up to his contract. (not like the Caps have any of those) Doubt the move to Vancouver is going to help his career, but who knows. He was a good guy to have around.

I don't care for or against any of the teams that are left. Never really followed the teams in the west. I don't like Vegas so I'd rather see the Avalanche win. I could care less about any of the north teams. I hate the Rat, AND they beat us so I'll root for the Isles in the east. I guess I'd prefer Carolina over Tampa, but don't really care.

Probably because the other player was not truly injured on the play. The problem is it WAS a deliberate attempt to injur. I don't have a problem with physical or even rough play, but dirty play, and attempt to cause injury should be punished.

You nailed it when you said the Habs might be the surprise of the playoffs. I really expected Toronto to win. Toronto seemed like they were really strong and playing well most of the year(#1 seed)
Montreal finished the season with 59 pts. that's 18'th out of 31 teams and only 3 games over .500. That would not qualify them for playoffs in any other division.
Price is having a great playoff in net, so that's always key to winning.
I didn't think Winnipeg was to be the SC winner either, but they have played pretty well the last 2 months and well enough to sweep the Oilers in round one (3 games went to OT)
I thought Colorado looked the best, with Toronto, Vegas, Florida, Tampa & Carolina looked pretty solid. I thought both FLA teams were the top two in the "central" despite Carolina finishing as top seed.
Top two seeds in the North are gone, as well as the top two in the East (ahem...Caps). Although TBH...all four teams in the east were pretty evenly matched and finished very tight.

Good on Montreal. I only watched the 5 minute recap, but looked like Montreal dominated nearly the entire game. 42 shots to 16. Hard to tell in a recap, but most of the play looked like Montreal was the better team.
Price let in what was probably a softie for Jets second goal to tie it in the 2nd.
Crazy, in a normal year they would not even have made the playoffs, being the 18th placed team in the NHL, and now they are in the Western Final

And for the record....I think 4 games (especially 4 playoff games) is excessive for the Sheifele hit.
The DOPS says he chose to hit the player instead of using his stick to try and negate the goal. Um....the rules don't say you HAVE to use the stick to swat at the puck and NOT hit the guy. The rules say you can hit the guy carrying the puck.
It was indeed a very hard hit and yes he COULD have avoided hitting him, but Sheifele was hustling back to try and prevent a goal and hit the guy BEHIND the red line, meeting him as he tucked the puck in the net. By the time there was contact, there was no way the committed hitter could have avoided contact at that point. He did not lift his hands or target the head or leave his feet. He lowered his shoulder and turned his shoulder inward and planted it squarely in the guy's chest.
I guess you could call it charging, but the guy was hustling to the play and he hit a player with the puck. The player with the puck, was not passing it or turning into the boards or anything else he was trying to score. Sheifele hit a guy WITH THE PUCK.
It was a massive, hard hit, but I don't believe it should have resulted in a 4 game suspension. Especially for a player who has no history, etc, etc..
The problem is...again....the inconsistent application of the rules of the game.
DOPS:
“It is also important to note that we have heard Scheifele’s argument that he gathers speed and maintains momentum in order to make a legitimate defensive play and attempt to prevent a goal from being scored. However, as Evans comes around the net with the puck, Scheifele does not attempt to make a play on the puck with his stick. Instead, he takes one hand off his stick, turns his shoulder and loads up for contact. While players are not required to attempt to play the puck, on this play Scheifele’s choice to not make a play on the puck tells us that he is conceding the empty-net goal.”
He didn't choose to concede the goal...he chose to hit the guy before he tucked it in the net. He just failed to do so.
Riddle me this DOPS....IF Scheifele had gotten there 1/20 of a second sooner and prevented the goal with the hit, would he still be suspended 4 games? That makes no sense. When would be a more important time to hit a guy then when he is about to score a goal? Just because it happened at the goal line, does that make it illegal to hit a guy? They talk like he hit the guy "well after" the goal was scored, but that BS. He hits the guy at/behind the red line as the guy is coming around the net. You slow it down to super slow mo and yeah...the puck goes in before the hit, but it is almost simultaneous and at real speed it's instantaneous. What you are saying is he should CHOOSE to concede the goal altogether and NOT hit the guy at all. You are penalizing a guy for pure hustle to try and stop a goal. Call it charging, which I will concede...."as a result of distance traveled he violently checked an opponent", which by definition is charging. And for the record....Scheifele was coasting when he hit the guy.
Is the DOPS telling us that a player now has to choose to try and use his stick instead of his body on EVERY play on the ice?
It's not like when Dale Hunter chased a guy down 10 seconds after the goal and cross checked him into the boards. (Pierre Turgeon)

cost of living in the D.C. area is too high, being this close to the federal government brings too much bullshit with it. I grew up here, the quality of life has definitely gone down in the last 20 years with all the development. I've had dirt bikes in the past, every place I rode them has become a housing development or shopping mall. I used to ride on the farm that became Dulles town center mall. Open/green space was a selling point a long time ago. There isn't much left now.

yes and no, the kind of person you encounter definitely changes outside of a few select cities in this country.. and you've obviously never been to Nashville or Dallas. Not to disparage the residents of Vegas, they are great people. It's definitely a blue collar town. More so than Shitsburgh.

Am I the only one rooting for a Habs - Isles matchup? Unlikely as both are underdogs [despite the Isles win yesterday], but I f'n hate Vegas and don't care so much for Tampa either. How they manage to stay under the salary cap year after year is up there with Stonehendge, Area 51 and the grassy knoll.

I've been watching the Habs games, it doesn't look to me like they can play the same game as Vegas. Though they did pick it up a bit in G4 against the Jets. We will find out tonight though, and maybe the Habs will keep on surprising everyone.

Back way back when at the beginning of the season and we were whining about the Caps and their cap issue - I looked up NHL reports about what teams were in bad shape, and Tampa was listed as probably the worst prior to the beginning of the season as far as cap situation. Caps were way up there (in the top 3-4).
Sucks to let them get away with it. And it does kind of suck to be a team that plays under the cap and then get beat by a team that's WAY over. I'm kind of surprised more teams did not abuse the flexibility of the taxi squad.
Caps should have put Kuzy on LTIR about March and brought him back for playoffs. Could have picked up 8 mil worth of guys in the interim. Kuzy sure as fuck wasn't worth it in that strech.

Well Poop. I actually watched most of this game.
Tampa scored their second to go up 2-1 with too many men on the ice. It did not really directly affect the play, but it SHOULD have been caught and a penalty called which would have resulted in the goal not being scored. Trotz said there were actually 7 Tampa skaters on the ice.
Didn't this happen with Tampa vs Caps in the playoff? - and they reviewed it and called a penalty on Tampa voiding the goal, and then the Caps scored on the PP effectively making it a 2-goal penalty call
You watch the replay from last night and you can see an Islander player go immediately to the ref and nothing comes of it. Can this be reviewed? Why would they not go back and look?

It doesn't look like the NHL is using East and West as conference titles this year, or thought that far ahead. They already need to issue East, Central, West and North division banners. But hard to tell with the NHL, it looks to be a possibility

The Hens, ofviously. Boston now. I really used to like them, but since the emergence of the Rat and the disaearnce of Chara, they are dead to me now. :thumbsdown:
The Lighrning are anther team that seems to get away with nore than they should. They are dirty. Philthy seem to have cleaned up their act over the last couple of years, but i haven't followed them for the last few years so....
These are slew foot teams, when the refs not watching, not stand up and drop your goves teams.

Yes agreed. I thought the Habs looked like the better team last night. More scoring chances and most of the play in Vegas end.
Sucks when you can't score though. Vegas goalie played well. But gets to OT and one bad/good/lucky bounce changes the outcome of a whole well played game.

Watching this game - shows me how much harder the teams compete and the Caps just were not there. Everything was so fast and crisp, etc.

I'm sorry, but I have a real problem trying to get enthusiastic about this. I realize that the Stanley Cup playoffs are supposed to be the be all and end all, and the regular season doesn't really count except to get in. But the Habs were 24-32 in the regular season -- not even close to a .500 team -- with of course a negative goal differential. They sneaked into the playoffs on loser points, as Detroit would call them, and now, here they are. So any old crap team can somehow worm its way into the playoffs, get hot at the right time, and voila - championship in sight.

I'm Happy for the Habs in that I wanted Vegas not to win, but yeah....early on I mentioned that a team that had no legitimate right to be in the playoffs was in because of the alignment and extra team allowed in this year. Didn't really expect them to mow everyone down - kind of figured a losing team was going to lose to better opponents, but you never know.
Good on them, but yeah. Not to take anything away from them playing well and beating good teams, but they really should not have gotten the opportunity.
Maybe someday we will have a "normal" year again.
Hopefully the Isles will take the Cup and nobody will remember who came in second :) (not that I'm an Isles fan, but based on who is left....I pulling for the Isles)
