Waynerivers, it seems to have happened in all pro sports.  As salaries go up, the rules of the game and the nature of play change to try to reduce the risk of injury.  There's too much motivation for players to not only play to make sure they can make the big bucks, but to minimize the risk that they have a career altering/ending injury as a result of what someone else does.

I still bet you a nickel that the Players Association got together about three years ago and everybody agreed to knock off the fighting, scrums and hard hits.  I guaranty that happened.  They make too much money.


Now if as a result, people stopped going to the games and the arenas were half empty, they would come out hitting again.

No doubt.  They are also banking on new generations of fans who don't know any better because they've never seen hockey as it really should be played.
