For some reason the National Park Service refused to acknowledge their existence in the east for decades. Now they admit they are back in the east. The fact is there have been sightings ever since the 70's. They were pretty much killed off in the east in the 20th century, but they came back. Bear populations have been and still are increasing and now even a few packs of wolves are starting to make their way east.

Lost River is just over the border where 66 hits 81. That's about a 20 minute drive from Winchester, that's right close to heavy population for an animal that didn't exist
ArJunaZ:
It is utterly mind boggling how carelessly we are trying to clear the puck out of our own zone. I swear it looks intentional. They can't be that bad.

In the 10 years since VA and WV reinstated black bear hunting every year has been a record harvest, and state biologists say there doesn't appear to be an impact on the population. A couple years ago a car hit a black bear just outside warrenton, the state said it weighed 400 lbs ???
