Jay Beagle to play against Minnesota Wild after slash to the ribs

ST. PAUL, Minn. — As Jay Beagle rehabbed his sore ribs and prepared to play against the Minnesota Wild Thursday after taking a nasty two-handed whack from Winnipeg’s Dustin Byfuglien last game, there was one thing that especially nagged at him.
He didn’t much care that Byfuglien got a $5,000 fine from the NHL Department of Player Safety, or if Byfuglien should have received more discipline. Beagle is not of the opinion that, because he was impeded while skating toward an empty net, the Capitals should’ve been awarded the goal anyway, which would’ve given Washington a two-goal lead with 1:17 left in the game.
[Dustin Byfuglien, Madison Bowey receive fines, but no suspensions after questionable hits]
What still bugs Beagle is that he couldn’t complete the pass over to a wide-open T.J. Oshie for the easy empty-net goal. Instead, Beagle folded after Byfuglien’s slash and the puck never reached Oshie in the middle of the ice. The Capitals got a power play, but the Jets scored the shorthanded goal in the last 15 seconds and then won in overtime, 4-3.
“You can’t control what a ref or anyone else is going to call, you only can control what I can control, and I had the game on my stick and I wasn’t able to make a play to finish it,” Beagle said. “So, I’ve got to make sure I do the job.”
But Beagle was in obvious distress on the bench, just slashed on the ribs by a 6-foot-5, 260-pound defenseman …
“Got to do it,” Beagle said. “You get paid to do it.”
Though the Capitals lost that game, the good news is that they didn’t lose their fourth-line center to an injury. Beagle has six goals and 13 assists, and he’s been more productive of late with one goal and four assists in the past seven games. He’s also Washington’s top penalty-killing forward and takes the most defensive-zone draws on the team.
“He’s recovered well, and that’s good,” Coach Barry Trotz said. “That was a non-hockey play, so to have someone get hurt on that, you never want to see that.”
Asked if a fine was sufficient discipline for Byfuglien, Trotz shrugged several times. “That’s my answer,” he said.
