This covid pause is about the dumbest thing I've heard of.  Who do they think they are protecting?  The fans?  Hardly.  The players are 20-30 something pros in prime physical condition.  The danger to them from covid is about the same as it is for children, IOW, about zero.  Oh, and there are about 8 cases of Omicron in the US and no deaths.  Many more people are going to die from cancer, heart disease, overdoses, gun shots and car accidents than are going to die from covid this year but the only thing people are hysterical about is covid.  This has to end.

I agree with you, I'm not sure what the NHL shutting down for a week is going to do in the greater scheme of things.

But the rest of your post is off base.  The latest weekly report on new cases (Dec. 12-18, I believe) showed that the Omicron variant had exploded to account for 73% of new cases, from less than 1% two weeks earlier and 13% the previous week.  Omicron is now taking over as the dominant strain of COVID in the country.  There have been a few Omicron deaths so far, but only a few -- but that's because deaths are a lagging indicator.  Since Omicron has only been widespread in the U.S. for a relatively short time, it will be into 2022 before deaths from the Omicron variant show up en masse.

And uh, the US is going to record more than 300,000 deaths from COVID this year.  It's less than cancer and heart disease, but much more than the others you mentioned.  And then of course there are the ongoing effects of "long COVID" that affect so many -- but it's the American way; if something isn't brought out in bold letters, it doesn't really exist.

The ONE reason above all others that our society is "hysterical about COVID" is the distinct possibility of wide scale collapse of the U.S. health care system.  Since health care represents about 20% of our economy, that IS a big deal.  Now if all the unvaccinated people in the country would agree that they will treat their COVID at home rather than going to the doctor or hospital when they get seriously ill, then the healthcare stresses due to COVID would largely disappear.  And the people with other conditions whose treatments are being delayed or shunted aside to make room for COVID patients would be able to be treated in a timely fashion.

I have had quite a bit of association with the health care field in a number of different ways over my lifetime.  I know the stresses and strains that the profession puts on people.  When you see the "scare headlines" about the crisis in the system and among healthcare workers -- believe it.

A week would give the Caps a chance to get some players off the COVID protocol list. It was getting pretty thin in the ranks.

You're backing up a claim of no Omicron deaths with a post that is 8 days old?

Look, i grant that there are few deaths to Omicron so far -- and there should be.  It's really only exploded in the past couple of weeks in this country.  In reality, IF Omicron is a relatively less frequently lethal strain than previous ones (mixed signals on that so far), and IF we can provide adequate care of the more seriously ill with the PROVEN mitigating treatments (NOT Ivermectin!!), hopefully we can limit the mortality from this strain.  But that still doesn't address the #1 issue, the strain on the healthcare system, and it might even exacerbate it, because more people who might have died will be saved through extensive hospital treatment -- which is what requires the staffing and attention.

wait...  are you are actually saying ivermectin isn't a proven treatment? Because that is incorrect.

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials say 2021 is shaping up to be even deadlier than last year.
It's too early to say for sure, since all the death reports for November and December won’t be in for many weeks. But based on available information, it seems likely 2021 will surpass last year's record number of deaths by at least 15,000, said Robert Anderson, who oversees the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's death statistics.
Last year was the most lethal in U.S. history, due largely to the COVID-19 pandemic. A CDC report being released Wednesday shows 2020 was actually even worse than the agency previously reported.
The report presents a final tally for last year of about 3.384 million U.S. deaths, about 25,000 more than a provisional count released earlier this year. Such jumps between provisional and final numbers are common, but 2020's difference was higher than usual because of a lag in death records from some states that switched to new electronic reporting systems, Anderson said.

The CDC this week also revised its estimate of life expectancy for 2020. Life expectancy at birth that year was 77 years, a decrease of 1.8 years from 2019. The agency previously estimated the decline at 1.5 years.
Anderson said it's likely that the nation will see more than 3.4 million deaths in 2021. Other experts said they think deaths for the year will end up either about the same as in 2020, or higher.
“It's really sad,” said Ali Mokdad, a mortality statistics expert at the University of Washington.
A large reason is COVID-19, which hit the U.S. hard around March 2020 and became the nation's No. 3 cause of death, behind heart disease and cancer.
Last year, COVID-19 was the underlying cause in about 351,000 deaths. This year, the number is already at 356,000, and the final tally could hit 370,000, Anderson said.
Experts also think the 2021 numbers will be affected by a drug overdose epidemic that is expected to — for the first time — surpass 100,000 deaths in a calendar year.

A great amount of strain could be taken off the healthcare system if the focus wasn't entirely on the vaccines, which are clearly only partially effective, masks and the like.  Why doesn't anyone talk about therapeutics?  Why are medicines that are proven to work even actively disparaged?  Why is the scientific truth that natural immunity is vastly more effective than vaccines also ignored?  Why has a one size fits all approach been taken from the beginning which ignores the differences in age, health, etc. among people which determines their vulnerability to a severe reaction to the virus?  Why do some people seem to have a vested interest in the public continuing to be fearful and uneasy?  Only a few people ask these questions and the people making policy would rather attack those asking them than give rational answers.
