I was begging for them not to trade Sprong. At the time, I was convinced he must have been a bad apple, but then the players came out and said how they would miss him and he was a good guy. I haven't been thrilled with Lavi as a coach and this one is clearly on him.
Just to throw more dirt on it, Mojo gives a half-assed effort in the Canes game and lest Aho skate right around him and score. At first I thought it must be Carlson, but then saw it was #90....

Spronger is definitely a sniper and good for him he gets full playing time in Seattle. Fact was he just wasn't cutting here for some reason or another. I kind of figured he must be the bad apple as well, but maybe he and coach just didn't get along. Whatever the reason - he wasn't getting the ice here. Seattle is a bottom feeder team so for sure he should get playing time there so good for him.
I think maybe Mojo just was sort of a guy they were comfortable with, and this team for whatever reason places a lot of value on that "comfort"
And I believe part of it was there was no (or very little) way the Caps could sign Spronger to a deal next year, so they traded for Mojo (a semi known entity) and at bargain salary cap savings cost. I figure that's why Caps had to give pics, so Seattle would retain salary on Mojo
Although, why not just let Spronger play out the season and give him some ice to see what happens? Dude definitely has some wheels and a wicked release. (and keep your draft pics....even if they are 4th, 6th round pics)
Good for Spronger with 3 goals, and not to take anything away but it was 3 goals in his first 5 games (He did not score in games 1 or 5)
1st goal was in his second game - a PPG goal against Arizona (about the only team worse than Seattle) Krakken won 4-2
2nd goal was the 6th goal in a 6-1 drubbing of LA
3rd goal was in 4-2 loss to LA couple days later
and he did not score in Game 5 vs Dallas.
Technically the twit feed or post or WTF ever it was is correct in saying three goals in three games, but that's a little misleading not including the 1st or 5th games
We could also say Ovi has 42 goals in 38 games this year (or whatever it actually is) but that's not counting the games he did NOT score in so it's misleading IMO
I hate when folks try and manipulate the statistics.
Not that 3 goals in 5 games is bad, and I'm happy for Spronger (or anyone) that makes the best of their opportunities.
It certainly is a lot easier to score from the ice than it is from the press box
Spronger has 11 goals and 6 assists in 51 games this year. Not exactly setting the world on fire. Those are Dowd/Haglin type production numbers just for comparison (and Dowd/Hagelin are definitely defensive role players)
I'm curious to see if Seattle resigns Sprong to a long term deal.
To be fair Mojo has 0 points in 4 games and a -2 for the Caps :-\ although he had 6 G, 17 A in 55 games this year with Seattle.
Offensively speaking, it was about an even up swap as far as offensive production goes.
Mojo 22pts in 55 games = 33pts/82 games
Sprong 17 pts in 51 games= 27pts/82 games
Thank goodness for the boredom thread. Fucking NHL scheduling
Mickstix:
Bottom line is, we mismanaged Sprong. A player of his age/skillset should of warranted us getting a late pick or two, not the other way around.
And so far Mojo had one good shift.. The "adrenaline" shift as I call it, the 1st time he touched ice for us.. Hard to believe whoever was scouting that trade didn't notice he's not half as fast as he used to be and really doesn't bring anything other then filling a roster spot while guys are healing.
And for our trouble of sending 2 draft picks and a young/cheap/skilled player to Seattle for him, we'll get to see our other young guys (AJF, CMac) get scratched once everyone gets healthy.
Least that's how I see it. Hopefully Mojo proves me wrong and does something..

Definitely agree on the picks...but remember these are 4th and 6th round (I think) picks, so not a lot, and I think that was to offset Salary...at least in part.
As far as mismanaged.....meh, that's really hard to say. Did we get the most out of Sprong? No, definitely not. But is that team's fault or player's fault, or both? I mean the guy DID play 47 games out of a possible 63 or so this year prior to the trade. It's not like he didn't get a shot, and there was something in his play they just did not like (maybe just the lack of production). And he's 25....still a young player, but at some point you got to launch or get off the pot. (and I don't mean what you do with your "thingy") And he is now with his 4th NHL team in his young career. Maybe just bad luck, but for some reason three teams (including Caps) have decided to move on from him for some reason or another.
McMichael is only 21, so he gets a bit more slack....If he is still failing to launch at 25, then he will get sent packing too..(or more important than age - his contract renewal status)
It reminds me a little of Vranna...he had LOTS and LOTS of chances before he finally sort of broke out one year (and then we traded him the next) :snicker:
BTW....Vrana has 7g and 2a in 11 games this year with Detroit. And he is a -5....and has 10 PIM (they turned him into a goon)
Still bored
