You are right, but it is a pipedream to think that Caps management will go for anything close to a rebuild.  They will stick to their guys to the bitter end. 


Setting sentiment aside, I can argue that the best thing this team could do is let Ovi go. For the money he wants, he will be a drag on the team for the next three years.  He definitely has slowed down and will continue to do so.


Signing Backstrom to his deal was a huge mistake.  He has his cup and is now happy to glide around the ice in critical games.  He had a good start to the year, but for his money, he is not going to help the team going forward.


If we had bold (smart) management, they would offer Ovi $9MM/year for 3 years and if he passes, trade him - maybe get a first and a second.  Then try and trade Backstrom, Kuzy and Oshie.  With the Cap savings and a few draft picks, they could quickly rebuild.


Unfortunately, the Caps management will think, they just need to add a guy or two to make one last push while they have Ovi.  They will probably sacrifice draft picks to boot.
