To be fair: Hath, Dowd, Haglin, Eller, Panik are all hard working, they just don't have skills to produce much on the score sheet. I know it's not really their job, but that's the "dig" on that group, imo.. The top guys barely have 200' between the 6..  Kovy hasn't really showed me why we need/got him, to this point..

* If it was to spark Kuzy, he looked pretty coked up the 1st game, but not much since..  :snicker:

Excellent post, Mick!
And well said!

Recently, YES,  Kuzy’s performance looks like his nostrils HAVE successfully intersected with his substance of choice, timing the event just before each period, because the effect shit doesn’t last long with a veteran!!😂🤣😂🤣

Good one, too, with Top 6 barely get 200’ between them!😂🤣

Backstrom has been coasting since he got back.  I said at the time they re-signed him, that we are going to really regret that contract.  Don't get me wrong, I have appreciated what he has done for us, but I'm not looking forward to watching him age.

Partial disagreement w/ya Beags.

Backy HAS definitely shown digression in age, especially where the energy, and stamina, enter the picture!  And the lesser effort, always shows on the defensive side, for almost any forward!

Obviously, we all know that energy and stamina are easily applied from the youngsters, as we see players, from all sports, as they age, some of the performances just drop off and some of them have degrees of the old “work smarter not harder“ category.
Hell I think all of us, middle-aged or better, can identify with that one! LOL

My point though, is that when I think of Nick Backstrom‘s overall career, he’s not super speedy, super hustle, super energy,  or any of those categories that tend to fall off more with age!

The more standout words describing Nick Backstrom’s career, IMO, are, reliability, consistency, excellent situational awareness, passing accuracy, extremely high hockey IQ, very competitive, etc. that is,  those things more cognitive and requiring less “brawny” skill!

Again, in my opinion, these qualities actually tend to improve with experience, and age, and at a minimum, weather better, than physical strength and speed, over time!

So although there’s a little caution on my part about Backy’s new contract, I’m not heavily worried about it, as he may end up slightly overpaid by the end of it, but it also means that Ovi will be re-upping his contract as well and we may actually see a record!

Over the long haul, It will be interesting to see if Ovi, chasing the record, will inhibit our ability to win, as DC has mentioned, that management, may favor Ovi, over TEAM!

I’m not sure I agree with that point,  but I know I’ve counted Ovi OUT,  for 50 goal seasons, for the last five years, and he’s proven me wrong, repeatedly!
So I’m learning to drop “he’ll never do it again”, out of my vocabulary, and THAT, I believe, is indirectly related to Backstrom‘s signing also !

Rush - I agree with your post.  I don't dislike Backy and it was clear they were going to sign him to help Ovie keep scoring with the shot at the record.  I have gotten a bit frustrated with Backstrom from time to time because I think he has only hit about 75% of his potential.

Part of that is his decision-making as he prefers to set other people up, rather than take more shots himself.  You can argue that as a center, and with playing with Ovie, that is his role.  However, there have been plenty of times that Nicky should get more aggressive and look to score.

The other reason he hasn't hit his potential, is simply that he is just not a fired-up, ultra competitive guy and he doesn't always run at 100% of effort.  If you watch him closely, there are plenty of times that he could have skated a bit harder/faster, or forechecked a little more.  Because of his talent, he gets by with this and is still a really good player.

I just fear that with the added years, the fat bank account and the Stanley Cup in hand, that his 75% will slip a bit more and we end up paying big bucks for an average player.

 Thanks for that post Beags!
You make some good points about effort level and passing the buck when he should be shooting. And the competitive in him has dropped.
As you stated correctly, Backstrom at 75% still brings a lot to the table then your standard level center, the question will be if he will be worth his contract 3 to 5 years from now! 😀

I'm not an Eller fan. I like the effort but he does make poor decisions with the puck. At both ends of the ice but especially entering the offensive zone.
We have a few players that make poor decisions trying to enter the offensive zone. And it's mostly our star players.

It probably doesn’t surprise anyone here that I’m an Eller fan, Kollie, but my good buddy, DC, is not an Eller fan either, LOL!

And no matter how many vodka shots I try to fill him up with, he doesn’t BUDGE!😂🤣😂
(Truth be told, I just get a kick out of him trying to say the word, “Euro-Trash”, when he’s a little “less than sober”, shall we say)!!😂🤣😂  Amazingly, somehow, we are never too drunk to “agree to disagree” about Lars Eller!!👍
(Just F’in with ya, DC)!!👍

No disagreement about some of our STAR players, with poor decision/performance, upon zone entry!
Agreed also, that it’s not really Ellers forte either.

I will say, though, that this year, the 3rd line, at least, has shown an awareness of their poorer zone entry skills, and have implemented a strategic change, as a compensation for it, by electing to frequently “dump and chase” more pucks into the zone, rather than to “skate them in”!

I have seen much more successful zone time, for our 3rd line as a result, as opposed to our cockier STARS, who continue a lot of “beating a dead horse”, with their speedier, AND SLOPPIER, attempts at zone entry!

Having said this, I still DO see Eller mess up zone entries, BUT, IMO, not so much during 5 v 5!

Rather, I see it during our PP, when, as being on the 2nd PP, Eller often times, inherits the role of bringing the puck up, AGAIN, only AFTER, our 1st PP, has PREDICTABLY, ran off 120-130 seconds, or more off of the clock, AND/OR our opponent has successfully sent the puck back up ice!

So in Ellers defense, he now has a very limited time for bringing up the puck, is also facing all new sets of fresh legs on opponents PK,  so he’s put in a position to have to do a lot, with very little time!
Don’t get me wrong, Kollie,  I’m not playing heavy violins for the fella, as we’re all aware, such is the life of a center, on the 2nd PP!😁

You’re correct that our overall Open ice puck handling, especially on zone entry, is nowhere near where it should be for our Capitals, and Ellers shooting skills also, are certainly not as accurate, as the stellar skills of our big shooters either!

Not only however, is his salary much less, relatively speaking, but it’s no mystery throughout the organization, that Eller is not getting a paycheck for his shooting accuracy!

Ellers lesser, raw, talent skills, we all know, is not the reason he’s been THE, solid third line center since he’s been here!  I’m sure this is a no brainer for all fans!

His puck retrieval skills, especially below the goal line, are excellent,  and once we are IN the zone, he plays a very good possession game!

He is, in my opinion, “in the right place, at the right time“, probably more often than any other skater on our team, when we are in the zone, and gets rewarded as such, probably more often than anyone else on our team!

The majority of his offensive signature is filled with hard-working, hustling, CLOSE IN, nook-and-cranny, type goals!  He’s in those positions, for us, like no one else on the Caps, sans Oshie, maybe!

His style of play has ONLY lead to such LEGENDARY results as, the Anxiety Busting, overtime winning goal, in round 1 of the playoffs, against the Blue Jackets,  allowing us to advance on to Pittsburgh, in our trek for the Stanley Cup!

Oh, and did I say LEGENDARY results? I forgot to mention the SAME TYPE of play style, that shot the WINNING GOAL, in game 5, in Vegas, FOR OUR ONLY STANLEY CUP!!

Additionally, he’s had quite a few more game winners, in that same style of play, SINCE winning the Cup,  not that anyone is accusing him of digression in his skill set. He hasn’t!

His PK skills, which ARE stellar, are particularly even more important, NOW, for this crazy, penalty laden, Capitals team, than ever before!  Both him and Haglin, have an excellent knack for not just shooting the puck back up ice on the PK,  but RELIABLY demonstrating good puck awareness!
Although there is a lot of credit to go around for our PK, I believe those two are the MOST responsible for our third best PK rating, in the league this year!
With the embarrassing number of penalties we commit, this aspect has been more than a major value to our team this season!!

Another added PK perk is seen when BOTH Eller and Hags, using the marginal time and space available, where we witness, often, both Eller and Hags ability in running off precious time on the PK, by skating with a controlled pace, back down the ice, during the opponents PP, and getting the maximum time possible with their uncanny “keep away“ antics!!
They are REALLY good at it!

Having said all this, Kollie,  I still get red-faced with anger at Eller for the extremely negative KNACK, he has for COMMITTING a penalty, at some of the worst times in a close game!
Initially, when I first saw this happening, I would cut Eller a little slack, saying to myself that because he’s a real hustler, he creates more opportunities to get in trouble!  But in the last two seasons especially, that excuse doesn’t even come close to cutting it, AND, it is his WORST negative as a player in my opinion!

So, on balance, as a whole package,  Eller is a solid keeper,  as he adds so much more than he detracts from the team!  And I’ll continue to buy the occasional throat lozenge, when I lose my voice over the timing of some of his stupid penalties!!😁😁

With Eller it's no so much his game I dislike. It's his attitude. He comes off too cocky and arrogant.
I still remember the first game of the season the season before this when we beat the Bruins 7-0.
Marchand didn't like his attitude and gave him a beat down. I don't likeep Marchand at all but I was ok with him beating on Eller. Only time I have ever approved of a Cap losing a fight.

as I recall, Eller did nothing wrong after scoring that goal, Marchand was just being Marchand and jumped a guy he knew he could beat. Ever notice how Marchand backs down from anyone that is capable of giving a highly deserved ass beating

Hmmm. Interesting - I don’t see Eller as cocky or arrogant at all
I certainly don’t know the fella but that’s not the vibe I get watching him
Eller’s positives certainly outweigh his negatives and he is a very good fit for what this team needs at 3C:  good pk guy, good hustle guy, and definitely bargain price for his level of effectiveness and fit for this teams needs
A little more sand in his craw would be nice but ....(insert D.C. “Euro-Trash” remarks here)

Also, I don’t think he was taunting Boston’s bench with the 7th goal...I think he was just excited he actually scored his 1st goal of the season...and in the 1st game of the year. Who wouldn’t be happy about that?  Especially a guy who has had struggles scoring goals

I recall they say he skated right at Boston’s bench and I recall watching the replay many times and he skated right BY Boston’s bench which was on his way to Caps bench for the customary string of high fives. Eller never even looked at Boston’s bench.

I have the same feeling about John Carlson!

Carlson, no doubt, gives us plenty of offensive production, but he just comes off, IMO, with that “shit-eatin’-grin”, kinda look,  especially when he commits an obvious defensive error!  It never seems like he is upset with himself about ANYTHING, and it makes me dislike him more, despite his good contributions!

Eller, as much as I like the guy, also has that cocky, shit eating grin, look!
With both Carlson and Eller, I don’t know if it’s just something in the genetics of their facial shapes, or what, and for all I know they may not even be feeling the way my mind perceives “the look“!
Either way, they both bother me in that area!😁😁

Eller did try to call out Marchand, the next time they played,  but Marchand did not “take the offer” to fight!  But Eller only called him out ONCE,  and did not keep on him after that!

I’ve got mixed feelings on this one, Mick, because I think Eller absolutely, let it slide a little too easy, and should have strongly, and definitively, kept after that punk Marchand!

Although I don’t see Eller as a fighter, at all, When Marchand drew blood on Eller, it was kind of a wussified sucker punch,  that surprised Eller and caught him off guard.
Ella was somewhat embarrassed anyway, by a chicken shit move on Marchands part,  thus, Eller should have never let him get away with it, the next game, should’ve dropped gloves on him, and forced A fight with Marchand, on the PRIDE factor alone!!

I forgot to mention that, regardless of what their facial expressions are, I totally give Eller a pass on it, because of the highly motivated character Standard that he has, which is in my opinion, COMPLETELY contrary to John Carlsen‘s style!

Carlson is 6’3”, 215-220!  His potential physical presence, RELATIVE to his actual LEVEL of physicality, has always been abysmal!  He SHOULD dominate defensively, the overwhelming majority of the time around our goal,  with his size alone, but you will rarely, if ever see him COMMAND any territory in that area!

He is a slow skater, has super slow reaction time, and unusually low physical coordination, for ANY professional athlete.
He is horrible down along the boards, in any given puck battle with an opponent, as well! A furry little kitten guards the crease better than his soft ass!

He has but ONE real defensive move, in his repertoire, that he employs....the poke check.... and he tries to incorporate that move in place of other defensive tactics, such as blocking shots, guarding an opponent after crossing the blue line, etc.

I’ll give him his due on the blocked shots, but he is so easily burned, once the poke check fails, after he’s challenged a skater coming into our zone!  He’s very consistent at that!

Ok, Kollie, NOW, I’ve let go!!😂🤣😂🤣👍👍

I'm just curious how a comment about Eller turned into bashing another player. Funny thing is that no one was defending Carlson.
It is pretty clear to see how bad Carlson has played recently. He had such a good first half. Great offensively and was holding his own defensively. The 2nd half of the season has been a disaster for him.

Well, you’re right, Kollie.

I had posted several times early on in the season, that I had noticed an IMPROVEMENT in Carlson’s  defensive play.
I had surmised that since the CAPS coaches had worked with him in practice, to improve his offensive skills, that it made him better overall, at both ends of the ice!  And we certainly saw that in the first half of the season as he went on an offensive point tear, and DID play a better defensive game!

My dislike for Carlson would have just been a “normal”, dislike for a player, if I separate out “the media”, from just what I see with my own eyes, from Carlson on the ice!

The media’s consistent, and chronically overdone, positive commentary on Carlson, has admittedly, fanned the flames of my disdain for Carly, to nearly “pathological”, in nature!😂🤣

I realize it’s not John Carlson‘s fault, that the media, in my opinion, has selected him as the “chosen one”, for promoting a home grown, (USA born), favorite, to coincide with Ovi,  so that Monumental can promote the “BEST of both worlds“ idea of both international, AND hometown favorites, for the fan base!  And to me, it’s almost beyond laughable, at how far Joe and Locker, especially Locker’s nose is up Carlson’s ass!!

So, yes, you didn’t do anything, except innocently comment about Eller!
I am the one with the issue, LOL! Where I can eventually turn a conversation, hell, even about how to make garlic mashed potatoes, into a rant on Carlson!😂🤣😂🤣
Sorry about that, buddy!
