Backstrom has been coasting since he got back.  I said at the time they re-signed him, that we are going to really regret that contract.  Don't get me wrong, I have appreciated what he has done for us, but I'm not looking forward to watching him age.

Unfortunately we have already seen the signs of aging. He is still a good player and has a good hockey IQ but the last 2 seasons we have seen a drop in his play. Especially on the defensive side. He went from a selke contender to an average defensive player. Bad thing is that he is still one of our better defensive players.

There are only two people I see that kick that trend.  Oshie and Eller.

I'm not an Eller fan. I like the effort but he does make poor decisions with the puck. At both ends of the ice but especially entering the offensive zone.
We have a few players that make poor decisions trying to enter the offensive zone. And it's mostly our star players.

To be fair: Hath, Dowd, Haglin, Eller, Panik are all hard working, they just don't have skills to produce much on the score sheet. I know it's not really their job, but that's the "dig" on that group, imo.. The top guys barely have 200' between the 6..  Kovy hasn't really showed me why we need/got him, to this point..

* If it was to spark Kuzy, he looked pretty coked up the 1st game, but not much since..  :snicker:

Hathaway, Dowd, Hagelin and even Panik know there limits. They aren't the most skilled but they do work hard and usually make good decisions. You don't see those guys hurt us very often because they are trying to do too much.

Part of it is his style.  He has historically been a "smooth" player that has a high hockey IQ and got himself in the right positions.  I always felt like he got by more on talent than all-out effort.  When he was young, he not only got away with that, but was an elite player.  I'm afraid now as he ages, his talent will only make him an average player - and one with a big contract.

Not going to argue about that but I still love him as a player and always will.
