it's also a bit late in the season to fire the coach and have it be worthwhile

I'm not so sure. You can look at it this way; if they keep Rierden, they're likely to go along as they are and exit the playoffs early. It also tells the players that management is content with the status quo. If they fire him and bring in someone else, it tells the players that management isn't satisfied, despite the overall record and that more heads could roll, including some of their's. It might also be just what they need to right the ship and go on a deep playoff run. It's really a no lose situation unless someone thinks that Rierden can figure it out, which I find doubtful.
As for candidates, as I mentioned earlier in here, I like Alan May for a number of reasons. First off, if you listen to him on the broadcasts, he quickly gets to the heart of what they are doing wrong and it reflects many of the things we all say in here. Secondly, he'll come pretty cheap (which mgt should like) because he's not in demand or on anyone's radar. Third, he's a member of the Cap family, so to speak, and knows how things are run around here. Lastly, he's an old school guy who will demand more attention to detail and chew on some asses if necessary, something Rierden appears incapable of. He's also a former player which can go a long way with other pros.

I agree completely, if the organizational goal was winning a Cup every year. But it isn’t.
Right or wrong, for better or worse, Reidons job depends on Ovies goals. Even if we didn’t make the playoffs, as unlikely as that is, if Ovie breaks 50, Reidon and GMBetaMales jobs will assuredly be safe.
Although this goes against every moral fiber of my existence, I “understand”, not like nor condone , but understand the methodology behind this.

It's a catch 22.. If Ovie isn't scoring 40+, they're probably a bottom dweller.. Least in their current makeup.

In the past, back to back games like this have been indicative of a team that has lost faith in its head coach

All they looked at was stats. Sure Carlson had 2 points in the game but the rest of his game sucked. He made a ton of bone head plays.

Are you kidding me? Yes, he got a goal that bounced off the defender and an assist. His defensive game would have been his worst of the year, except that came in the preceding game against Philly.
Carlson is back to his patented style of lackadaisical play where he casually skates around, avoiding any contact, and then is standing 3 or 4 feet away from the guy that scores. But hey, he's gonna win the Norris!

I noticed the EXACT same thing, Beags!!!
How they quickly snuck in the Carlsen/Norris crap, due to ONE goal!!
He’s been a defensive disaster, with no goals in January that I remember!! And you weren’t hearing anything about the Norris in January for John Carlson!😂🤣😂
Almost every word out of your post has been coming out of my mouth for the last eight weeks minimum, about John Carlson!
I almost passed out when I saw him actually hit an opponent at mid-ice, A few games back!
