I'm totally in with the Ref conspiracy.  I've seen it way too often.
However, your point about the PP PP's is also very relevant

I understand where you’re coming from Lily.
Remember on the old board, around the time I was just a newbie, and AJ put out that chart that showed the referee bias?
That was really eye-opening for me, and it did definitely show that, at a minimum, there were several teams, including us, that came out on the short end of the stick with the officials, as well as some that seem to be abundantly favored!

My bigger point is that the Caps of been extremely successful team, in spite of the refs calls, demonstrating an uncanny ability to overcome the issue.  So that, even if that is the standard, a given if you will,  not only is it out of our control, but we’ve been successful anyway!!👍

Tonight we were not that team!

There could be considered an even bigger conspiracy.
Who here thinks that the Vegas Knights would ever have been allowed to win Lord Stanley at their first attempt?  From a mish mash,   a cobbled together team, comprised of unwanted, or expendable players from other teams.
We were never, ever going to lose that final.  The NHL would neer have allowed it.

You DO know the NHL controls/owns/governs the Refs, right?  There is NO independent body to govern them.  The NHL owns them.  They do what they're told if they want to keep their jobs.

OK, LIL!
It’s just a touch out there, for me, but I do like, and respect, the spine it takes to say it!

(Most of the folks I like, are a touch out there, anyway!)😁

Good to be back in the swing of chatting a bit w/ya!  Don’t know how you stay up so late! Props!

Our power play was garbage. Really needed them to come through to get a win here...

I felt like we were driving play for most of the game, and the Carolina goals were from lucky counterattacks. It's kinda disheartening when you're spending all this time on the attack and one broken play leads to an odd man rush and the opponent scores on their first try. Felt like that happened too much here...

I think we should have hit more.  taken them harder, earlier.  We were on the 2nd of a back to back, they were on the first of their back to backs.   We should have taken the sting and the wind out of their sails.
They would have wanted to avoid us and keep something for timorrow, right

Good call, Zero!
No doubt we played better, and in fact were the better team out there tonight.
So when the karma comes back to you in the form of a 4 vs 3 overtime power-play, for the game winner no less, it’s on YOU, to keep the karma gods paid back!
They didn’t, and the Caps got the change handed back to them, quickly, from their karma dollar!!

the league needs to change the goalie interference rule. There shouldn’t be any contact allowed while he’s in the crease, period. That would get rid of the interpretation part of it where the Caps get screwed more often than not, having it open for the jackass zebras to deduce if the player prevented the goalie from playing the puck is one of the stupidest rules the nhl ever made. I’ve been trying to find the video from a few seasons ago where a player was pulling on Holts leg pad but the review said the goal counted, at this point I don’t remember what team the Caps were playing when that happened.

I remember the one where I think it was Carlson's jersey sleeve waving in the breeze ever so slightly brushed against a goalie and we got called for goaltender interference. The application of this call is the most inconsistent one in the NHL.
Be careful what you ask for America; you just might get it.

Agreed Alta!
No crease contact takes all the individual interpretation out of it.  Makes it more black-and-white. Something sorely needed in the NHL!!

Is it some new strategy to try and rest during the power play?  I am trying to figure out what the strategy was last night.....especially with multiple icings during the power play.  Usually don’t see that with good teams

watched the game late on delay.

Caps played better than the Cans for most of the game.

Can't go 0/6 on the PP and expect to win.

No scoring from our top line hurts....although Oshie scored so that's good.

Goalie interference call sucks, but is what it is.  Need to sack up and overcome it.  It wasn't a bad call.  Fix the rule, make it clear and there won't be as much heart ache.  (although I wasn't really surprised or bothered at this call)

Boys looked tired in the 3rd.  Lots of hockey and travel in a short period.  Not making an excuse, but it is a reason.  Should not have come to that, and we were given an opportunity to win in OT.

Holtbly looked stellar in the first.  It really could have been 2 or 3 to nothing the other way.  I did curse him for allowing the goal in OT, but mostly just reaction and disappointment.

ANd like someone else said (yes, I'm too lazy to go back and credit you) the game lacked the intensity of the preseason game - which I found a bit odd and disappointing.

Go Caps.

Go Caps.
We can point to Caps lacking an Energy Line, particularly in the Reidon era.  A line or shifting lines put out when your team as slacking and lethargic, to raise utter hell and get the team going.

Really, why in the hell does Hathaway only get 9min in a game like that,

It's like NHL teams have moved away from "an energy line" because it is not what the NHL wants the NHL to be.  However, IF it is effective, than how can you move away from having it altogether?  I think Caps could have a good 4th line with Hathaway/Dowd/Leipsic/Boyd/Stepho.  I really never heard of Hathy or Lepper, but like what I've seen in preseason and such so far.  Curios to see who eventually gets the 4th line duties and who gets sent to Hershey/elsewhere.  I thought Stepho would certainly be the odd man out, but think he has looked pretty good this year.

I will say at least the Caps moved (albeit their hand was forced due to salary cap) to picking up some energy type guys.  I like the acquisitions we made....decent contracts, some guys with a little more size and definitely some grit.  I think we have a more balanced team.  We will see if the scoring dips, but what did we lose in scoring?  Conno and Nisky and BURA, and Pelly?  I had no problem with Conno, but only at his previous price.  I was ready for Bura to go (to the volcano) years ago.  I liked Nisky, but with the contract and his age, that trade was a great move.

Anyway, I like the overall roster better this year.  We shall see how it relates to success.  I think it will come down to TEAM D, because we are weak on real D...  I know, I know... we have the Norris candidate, top 10 D man in the league in Johnny Q, but is he really .....a D man?
REALLY hoping Kempney comes back strong and Orlov finally has a solid D year, and Jensen is solid and Gudas works out.  Lots of holes back there and ifs and buts and so on.  One or two of the young guys really needs to blossom.  (Ahem....would help if they got to play)  I like Ziggy, but would also like to see Lewington get a shot.  I'd send Juice packing, but would have done that last year.  I'm sure he's just hard to move -  I mean nothing against the guy, he has some skills, and plays well enough utilizing his abilities, but I just can't deal with a 160lb NHL D man.

Oh my, turned into another tirade.

sufficient to say...an "energy" line is not socially/marketabley acceptable in today's NHL

GO CAPS!

I think the 4th line is going to be whoever is cheapest, expect it to be solidified within the week when Kemney comes back

I don't know how the Caps are going to manage the cap.  WIth Kempney out the current roster is 45k OVER the cap.
Kempney is 2.5 mil.  That means you have to move $2.55m to afford him.

Lewy and Ziggy are 700k & 750K hits so sending one of them down, Caps are still over the cap by  $1.75m (with Kempney added back)

Caps are currently carrying 5 centers, so one is going to have to go....maybe Stepho  (he is 1.05m whereas Dowd is $700k)

Add Kempney, minus Lewy, minus Stepho and you are are still over the Cap by about $750k

Those damn contracts (Kuzy, Orlov, Johnny Q) are pinching.  I mean we knew it was coming to this, but surely would have been nice to be paying Carly $7m instead of $8m, or Orlov 4.5 instead of 5.1m and KUZY....$7m instead of 7.8....blah, blah, blah
I know most NHL GM's were planning for a slightly higher cap this year than what was finalized, and that 1 mil or so is definitely going to bite the Caps.

Although, if not for Kuzy's questionable status, his number isn't really all that far fetched for him.  (assuming he plays to potential)

Both Orlov and Carly pretty much took advantage of the D bind the caps were in when they were due for resiging.  I mean I don't fault anyone for getting paid, but you think about 8 mil/year is 1/10 of the whole cap.  You can't afford too many of those guys.  They better be worth it (I'm talking about you Johhny Q)....and Kuzy

I will say for as much bitching as I do about Carly, his level of play has improved (over the last 3 years), and I really don't have a problem with his level of play.  His level of intensity could be better, but the Caps DO rely on him ALOT for all situations and lots of minutes.  And he IS a Norris candidate afterall  :smirk:

Go Caps
