Interesting move

The Caps just recalled G Ilya Samsonov from Hershey.

On the surface, this doesn't make sense.  The Bears have made a late-season push with Samsonov being a big part of it, and have qualified for the Calder Cup playoffs.  Presumably he would be a big part of Hershey's playoff plans and would get a lot of valuable experience in an AHL-level pressure cooker, but unless there is an injury he's going to be sitting in the press box most nights with the big club.  Why would the Caps do this, unless there is a health situation with the big club we don't know about?  Would "soaking in the Stanley Cup atmosphere" be enough justification for having him here?  Or is this a situation where he will be around for a few days and then be sent back down?  If they wanted him to be an extra goalie in practice, you'd think they would have brought him up a few days ago.

Rierden stated that Samsonov will be here for the first two games and then they will revaluate the situation so it sounds like it may be only temporary.  Copley was recalled last season for the playoffs but of course Hershey did not make the playoffs so the situation is not comparable.

Well, that makes a little bit of sense, then.  I think Hershey is still playing regular season games through this weekend, so maybe they brought him up for a tiny bit of big league exposure, since they are already in the playoffs.

In other news, the Caps just extended Nick Dowd for 3 years at a total cost of $2.25 million, which is a salary cap hit of $750,000 over the life of the contract.  Can't complain about that -- it's only a little more than league minimum.  SOMEBODY has to fill the bottom of the forward rotation.

Hey Black.
Hope your Easter was peaceful!
I like the Dowd signing. It’s got all the trimmings of a good deal all round!

Dowd signed multi years, so he’s happy. Management has to be happy with the $$!!
And Dowd is a gritty, hustler, who is quite attentive, and disruptive on defense, and is a very decent 2 position offensemen, mainly center, but can fill in as forward adequately!
Although not in possession of the most stellar puck handling skills, he seems appreciative of a system that allows him to compensate for some lesser talent, with a go hard effort level!
Hopefully he’ll work on improving his face off abilities. Somebody simply has to step up for us in that category!

The Samsanov thing was a bit of a head scratcher for me, as well. Reading that HERSHEY is already playoff bound, seems the contributing factor, as I haven’t heard any major negative on Copley, from the Caps mgmt. At least not in the regular media channels. The 2 games thing mentioned by 4Caps, makes a bit more sense also!

Like to see the boys wrap it up Monday!!

At least it isn’t a typical 3m for 5yr GMBM contract, besides he’s one of our few centers that can win a face-off and play the PK.

There are some potentially decent centers in the system that should be able to fill his role, this should give them sometime to develop.
