Orpik
« on: Sunday March 10, 2019, 12:29:07 PM Eastern »
I have said this is most likely his last season here, only because he will be the only one without a contract. I think he’s got one or two productive years left, and if he’d do them for $1M each I’d be on that like stink on rice. I’ve also said I don’t see an $8M a year Dman on this team...

it looks to me like this Dcorp could still use Orpiks leadership for another year or two

For a 3rd pair guy, he's just what they need.. It's when they start over pinching and trying to use the defenders too much, that they'll get in trouble. He's not fast enough to recover from a risky play or mistake, so he has to play perfect defense..

Either way wouldn’t surprise me.  One on Keep the Cup Team” together is a priority for Monumental, and, as much as I’m not a Hooks fan, he’s the most reliable in an otherwise sub-par shitty DCorps.

On the other hand, there’s 2-3 D prospects that are ready and need playing time else theyll loose trade value or will not resign.

But, we know how much lGMBetaMale loves woman’s rules/five forward hockey, so I wouldn’t be surprised, if they let Hooks go and went with Juicey Djoos anc expect Jensen to do everything.

Course a logical solution would be to trade Orlov and his overpaid contract, resign Hooks, and use Lewingtom/Sleish(?) with Jensen

I think they are done with Orpik after this year. They think some of their younger prospects are better than they are.  I have totally changed my position on Orpik. I used to hate him because of his contract and average abilities. Now I love him because he is the only guy on the team besides Wilson that will actually hit somebody.  Their still is a place for that and we need it desperately.

Only thing I didn't like about Orpik was his contract.. Once they got that under control Im all in. He's a "playoff" defender. Blocks shots, hits, plays D..

Selling off Orpik's contract and bringing him back for $1mil is freaking brilliant for this team.  Saved them what....$5mil a year.  I like Orpik...scratch that... I LOVE Orpik at $1mil.  He brings so much more to the team than you see on the ice.  Plus he actually HITS people, and Blocks shots.
He's old and slow, but he is a Freaking STEAL at $1mil...especially for THIS Caps team.  He will look even better in the playoffs (if the the ole geezer lives that long  )

Jensen has stepped up and made Orpik a little less valuable, but he is still has value for this team.

GMBM gets an A from me over the last couple years.  You can't get EVERYTHING you want (trade Bura, trade Bura, trade Bura), but he has done well, especially considering the contracts they have had to work around.  Didn't/don't like the Orlov contract (or the Carlson one), but at the time, they did not seem WAY overly out of bounds and both guys had Caps over a barrel.  I made at Orlov over his shitty decline in play this year, not GMBM.

Not sure about next year. IF Orpik would play for $1 mil, I'd sign him again for sure...you could always move that contract to a team that needed D leadership if our younger guys (Ziggy, Lewington, Hobbs, big Russian I can't remember) made improvements and were ready for NHL full time.

I don’t see Orpik returning next season and believe he will retire.  He will be 39 years old and has had a full career.  While I agree that Orpik at 1 million is a great deal for the Caps I don’t see Orpik signing another contract for one million.  I think he will make a great coach.

Not sure how he feels about Rierden and Co., but I could see him being a coach here if he wanted to.. As for GMBM, I like the moves he's made to keep the team together, but all those inflated/extended contracts will come back to bite at some point.

I’d like to see Orpik return. Can’t imagine he would be offered more than where he is now.
He and his wife/family are well entrenched in the DC area, with the Make a Wish Foundation, other Monumental charity branches, not to mention his kids and school.

When he was first traded away last summer, he expressed disappointment in having to possibly pick up and leave the DC area. At his age, he figured retirement here in DC, at some point, and his family had begun some of the settling process.

He had stated he and his family were quite happy about the whole return thing, back to DC again, for the very reasons mentioned.

If Orpik is not intending to negotiate for a bigger contract, than I’d say that at least the wheels are greased a bit, in favor of his return!  Hell, we’ve got youngins coming up, that would benefit from his presence.

Almost everyone, of course, would understand if he decides to hang his skates up at the end of the season!
Brooksie is in a good position, either way it goes!

For elder statesmen, such as ourselves, we refer to this as "resting for the playoffs" or "a maintenance day"

Not "getting benched"

I wouldn’t read too much into this, I think they are just resting him because they have another game tomorrow night.  No reason for Orpik who is 38 years old to be playing back to back games.  Also this gives Djoos a chance to play with Jensen so that they gain familiarity with each other’s style of play in case they need to play together in the playoffs although I don’t see that happening unless there is an injury to one of the other defenseman.
