New York knockout: numbers for the morning after

Headline photo: @Capitals

The Washington Capitals met up with the only team that they are chasing in the Metropolitan Division standings in the Islanders and took down those Isles 3-1. That’s opening March on the right path and long may it continue.
The Caps out-shot the Isles 29 to 21.

* The Islanders edged out the Capitals 12 to 8 when it came to high danger chances at five-on-five and I do think that’s accurate, but I also think a couple of those New York chances were created by bonehead turnovers from Caps players. Minus-four isn’t really a margin to be upset about in the first place so I overall am somewhat happy with how the Caps handled quality, especially after the first period.
* Alex Ovechkin‘s game winning goal was his 45th of the season, giving him ten career 45 goal seasons. Those ten 45 goal seasons are now the most in NHL history as Ovi passed Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy‘s nine seasons last night.
* I was very happy with the job Michal Kempny and John Carlson did against the Isles second line. In those minutes against that line at five-on-five, the Caps out-shot the Isles 6 to 0, out-attempted them 13 to 1, out-scoring chanced them 8 to 0, out-high danger chanced them 3 to 0, and out-scored them 1 to 0. There was a particular 3-on-2 odd man rush that I highlighted on Twitter that they both negated which summed up their great nights.
* I also thought Nick Jensen was fantastic in this game. It’s nice to have a defenseman like him in the lineup where you never really have to worry about the puck when its on his stick and the guy is a fabulous skater too. It was interesting to see him take shifts with three different partners in this game and I wonder if we could see some shakeup in the future.
* Another player that I liked was another trade deadline acquisition in Carl Hagelin. The guy just works really, really hard and has that TJ Oshie knack for coming out of piles of players with the puck. He saw some time (7:10) with Lars Eller and Brett Connolly and immediately lifted the line’s pace of play in a great way.
* Time to wrap this up with some negatives. Firstly, the Caps defensive pairing of Dmitry Orlov and Matt Niskanen ended up on the ice at five-on-five for eight of the Islanders high danger chances and zero of the Capitals. That’s not good, folks. Also not a great night for Andre Burakovsky as he saw the majority of his ice time swiped by Hagelin and made a couple really bad turnovers that led to Isles rush chances.

I'm feeling good about this game, yet I'm hungover from yesterday's St. Patrick's day festivities...

Let's GO CAPS!  Go Kuzy!
