Copley extended

(1/8) > >>

BlackIce:
Caps just extended Copley for 3 years at AAV of $1.1 million.

This is an interesting signing and signals the end of an era that has existed for more than a decade now.  The Caps have been cycling through goalies, always having multiples around that were highly thought of, with both they and the organization thinking of them as potential starters.  This has created some awkward playing time situations and has forced the organization's hand in moving some of them because otherwise they would leave, looking for a starting gig.

Copley is different.  This extension, with his being age 27 and on the cusp of UFA status, seems to indicate that both he AND the organization consider him to be an acceptable backup goalie, but ONLY a backup.  The contract gives the Caps stability and cost certainty in the backup position for the next few years, and will cause the organization to focus solely on their decision about how to handle the starting goaltending position.  On the other hand, as long as Copley does a reasonably good job as a backup, he could also be moved pretty easily if another backup goalie (Vanacek??) could replace him for less money and the organization could make a good deal involving him since he isn't all that pricey.

DC_1908:
GMGMs Goalie Pipeline has (somehow) remained, that being said, a trade could be in the works.

This is a very tradable contract, and could be used as incentive to retain/eat salary in a deal for Copley.

This leaves us with Vaneek or Samsonsov as backups, or to deal while retaining a high quality backup.

But, don’t rule Holtby wanting out, this year and/or next, (I wouldn’t blame him in the least). Moving Holts could replinsh depth, picks, and cap space, while leaving us with Copley and good prospects.

If they move Holts before Reirdon gets canned, I'd see that as an admission of failure

ya never know.

I don’t think they’ve left him in past 5, maybe 6, but Holtby has to be pissed about the pond hockey system, shitty D, inexcusable faceoffs, and PK that couldn’t keep stop a 12yo Coed Rec League powerplay.

Not to mention idiotic fans and media that blame him for having horrendous numbers this year.

But ya know, if you need 6 goals to win a fuckin game anyway, payin a goalie a lot is kinda pointless

Why would they move Holtz?  I don't see that happening.
You mean like admitting the season is over?

Also DC mentioned Holtz maybe wanting out?, but why would he? Holtz is just as much a part of this team debacle as anyone.  And him maybe wanting out is pure conjecture.  The team is not playing well, but it's not like they are TOTALLY off the rails and in the cellar (yet).  Not like they have MISSED the playoffs (again...yet)
