Copley extended
« on: Monday February 04, 2019, 12:38:55 PM Eastern »
Caps just extended Copley for 3 years at AAV of $1.1 million.

This is an interesting signing and signals the end of an era that has existed for more than a decade now.  The Caps have been cycling through goalies, always having multiples around that were highly thought of, with both they and the organization thinking of them as potential starters.  This has created some awkward playing time situations and has forced the organization's hand in moving some of them because otherwise they would leave, looking for a starting gig.

Copley is different.  This extension, with his being age 27 and on the cusp of UFA status, seems to indicate that both he AND the organization consider him to be an acceptable backup goalie, but ONLY a backup.  The contract gives the Caps stability and cost certainty in the backup position for the next few years, and will cause the organization to focus solely on their decision about how to handle the starting goaltending position.  On the other hand, as long as Copley does a reasonably good job as a backup, he could also be moved pretty easily if another backup goalie (Vanacek??) could replace him for less money and the organization could make a good deal involving him since he isn't all that pricey.

GMGMs Goalie Pipeline has (somehow) remained, that being said, a trade could be in the works.

This is a very tradable contract, and could be used as incentive to retain/eat salary in a deal for Copley.

This leaves us with Vaneek or Samsonsov as backups, or to deal while retaining a high quality backup.

But, don’t rule Holtby wanting out, this year and/or next, (I wouldn’t blame him in the least). Moving Holts could replinsh depth, picks, and cap space, while leaving us with Copley and good prospects.

If they move Holts before Reirdon gets canned, I'd see that as an admission of failure

ya never know.

I don’t think they’ve left him in past 5, maybe 6, but Holtby has to be pissed about the pond hockey system, shitty D, inexcusable faceoffs, and PK that couldn’t keep stop a 12yo Coed Rec League powerplay.

Not to mention idiotic fans and media that blame him for having horrendous numbers this year.

But ya know, if you need 6 goals to win a fuckin game anyway, payin a goalie a lot is kinda pointless

Why would they move Holtz?  I don't see that happening.
You mean like admitting the season is over?

Also DC mentioned Holtz maybe wanting out?, but why would he? Holtz is just as much a part of this team debacle as anyone.  And him maybe wanting out is pure conjecture.  The team is not playing well, but it's not like they are TOTALLY off the rails and in the cellar (yet).  Not like they have MISSED the playoffs (again...yet)

I stated it  was a possibility, and a feesiblle one given this teams history of throwing him to the wolves and/or under the bus.   So yes conjecture, certainly nothing that was reported.

However, extending a backup goalie, that was part of two of the biggest recent trades, after a very bad loosing streak, and when trades are heating up, is assuredly to be more than justr locking up a backup goalie for the playoffs, so everything should be at least considered.

Another consideration that BMac mentioned is that in the summer of 2021 we will need to expose a goalie who is signed through the 2021-22 season in the expansion draft for Seattle.  We will now be able to expose Copely.   Holtby’s contract expires after next season as does Backstom’s so it may be hard to re-sign both of them and if Sansonov continues to play the way he has lately, the Caps may decide not to re-sign Holtby and go with Samsonov as the number 1 goalie.

Yeah, I here you, but Holtz is a fan favorite and if Monumental is all about marketing and image, trading Holtz would make them look bad..unless they pulled off some major blockbuster deal. (as if)

I have no problem with the $$/deal for Copley.  Not sure why they would bother...Unless is he UFA next year and they just want to get it done? Seems like pretty bargain price from Caps end.  Not sure how this is great from Copley perspective.

Sure as hell wish they would move Burka already, but looks like nobody wants him.  I mean we could use the cap space and he is dead wood at this point.  Maybe he should go dangle in Europe.  He is just too soft on the puck for his size. Got some mean skills, but they aren't getting him anywhere without the proper attitude or coaching or teammates or whatever the hell would get him going.  Time to cut bait with him has long past.

I don't see the Caps creating the cap space to make the trade they need (real D), so I don't expect much real movement from them by the trade deadline.

Maybe we can just give Burka, Smith-Pelly, Orlov, & Djoos to some team even-up trade, no money, no picks for.... a bag of NEW pucks.  Four shiny Hockey Players for a bag of pucks....even a small bag...okay used pucks, we'll take a small bag of used pucks.
Imagine what we could do with Orlov & Burka salary.  5.1+3.25 = 8.35 mill/year.   Hell, we could get another Carlson for that  :raspberry:   Smith Pelly was a fair price at 1mil.  I have no issue with that except that he has become (or always was) Mr Stonehands.  He does bring some physical play though, so I'm not so down on him.  Oh, and the caps are celebrating "Hockey is for everyone" and Black History month now, so we can't trade away our token player.  (WHERE's the GASP/SHOCKED face emoji?)

It annoys my anal retentive ass to no end that the text size and font shrinks when I hit the back space key.  Don't you people know some of us make mistakes while typing and SOME (ahem..DC...cough, cough)of us actually want to correct it so we can get our very important opinions across to others (Ō_ƆŎ)

I can't believe all the happy hype talk (even on these boards) about Djoos getting close to coming back.  So what?  The guy is a waif.  Has no business in the NHL.  I'd stick with Ziggy at this point over Djoos.  Ziggs definitely needs some work and experience, but he is three years younger than Djoos and outweighs him by 40 lbs.  Either that or Djoos seriously needs a trainer so he can bulk up in the off season to a whopping 175 (oohhhh....scary - I'm sure McDavid is quaking in his boots just thinking about it)

Peace out Peeps.

I think the Copley extension is a steal.  If you take away one bad game, when the whole team stunk, he has been really good this year. I'm not sure why Copley would sign that deal.

want to? 90% sure they wouldn’t, after all he’s the primary reason we have a Cup and are in a playoff spot.

That being said, as in the Roy video, he could be the one wanting out.  I mean shit his coach
his hone, the organization doesn’t give two shits about helping him, and the pond hockey system leaves him out to dry.  This is killing his numbers and reputation, not mention the chances of multiple Cups.

if I was Holtby or his agent, I’d be wanting out of a place that’s using him to make other players look better at the cost of my/my clients stats and contract value.

(As for the fonts, I’m not sure why they’re changing like that (that’s Arj), but to fix just go through and the font commands ie

Regarding your font changing when you hit backspace. I never have that issue, nor can I replicate it. The only way I can see the font "changing" when you backspace is if you backspace across the transition from one font  to another font. This is not really changing, but only picking up the font type at the point you stopped backspacing. One easy way to avoid issues is to type your message and make your font changes at the end. You have to really be careful if you cut and paste text of various font types around in your post. This can start to confuse the editor. The best thing is to keep it simple.  Making font changes at the end will prevent any issues.

I don't make font changes.  I just type and rant and rant and rant and type and then want to change something
like when i have multiple lines of rant (I mean hard, honest fact-based opinion) and then somewhere I decided to delete a space between like two lines of text
so i go to the end of say line 3 of text and hit delete key to delete a blank space before line 4
and it reduces all the text following where I hit the delete key to a minute size too small to read
so then I go back and manual change the font size to make it big enough to see.
I am on my PC at work - using google Chrome (if that matters at all)
Lets see if this works.... :b:

I will leave a blank space above and keep typing and
then I will go back and hit delete key.

See.  It shrank the text.  Well it appears it is larger, but usually it is so small you can't see it (insert your own image here)
It also changes the font.

I did not do anything except delete a blank space (line)

Oh and thanks....I always forget about the "more" emojis.
