Holtby won this one.

And yet, I was watching the game summary from the BOSTON point of view, and while the Bruins had a big edge in total shots, the highlights of goalie saves were about equal; i.e., the quality chances would seem to have been pretty even.  In other words, Halak kept the Bruins in the game about as much as Holtby kept the Caps ahead.  The Caps' organizational mantra is, it isn't how many shots you get, it's how many quality chances you get.  It frustrates fans sometimes when a guy with a decent look passes it up to try to get someone else a premium look -- but that is what they are coached to do.

The achilles heel of this team is becoming clearer and clearer, though -- face-offs.  This and the PK have both suffered with the loss of Beagle, but he's the guy that was the odd man out when cap space ran out.  The problem is, it's great to talk about "next man up" (another organizational mantra), but no one has even remotely stepped up to assume Beagle's best and most important contributions to the team.  As much as the Caps are already overloaded with lower-line bodies, probably their greatest need at the trade deadline is a lower-line PK/faceoff man.

Also, as much as folks here are ragging on Burakovsky, and reasonably so, Eller and Orlov, as or more important players in the full scheme of things, are hurting us as well.

And yet, this team has won 14 in a row against the Bruins and 15 of their last 16 against the East.  They can hardly do any better than that.

Just looking at the stat sheet and noticed that Wilson had 23:28 minutes of ice time the most of any forward by over 2 minutes and Carlson was the only player to have more ice time with 26+ minutes.  That is crazy, he had over 4 and half minutes on the PK and 2 and half minutes on the PP.  At ES Ovie and Kuzy had more ice time.  It just shows how important Wilson has become to the team.  That contract he signed last summer which a lot of people around the league ridiculed is a bargain and another great move by BMac.

over-passing, toe dragging, and trying to be to cool is not looking for "quality chances/premium looks", unless they're trying to turn the puck over.

Yes, it IS their way of looking for quality chances.  You don't know what you are talking about.

If Wilson keeps up his around-a-point-per-game pace, with all his PK responsibilities and now some PP time, it would not be totally laughable for him to be at least remotely in the discussion for MVP (except of course for all the games he lost due to suspension).  For all-around duties, he IS becoming one of the more valuable players in the league.  Tom Wilson has finally been fully unleashed on the NHL.

:lmao: What the hell ever man.  Any one who has watched this team over the past ten years knows that “quality chance”, ain’t to high of a priority, particularly when you have the league leader in shots every year, and gets great nicknames like Team Odd Man Rush.

What you are ultimately referring to is the coaches don’t want then to take shots that will result in easy routine saves, Well,  yeah,(I’m pretty sure they even tell players that in pond hockey).

However you were insinuating that “not shooting” was by design while the highly orchestrated strategm developed for the man with the puck to make a pass to the other man in the optimal scoring area, or to the check down based on how the D reacts and previous scouting reports  (not unlike a high speed 5-5 power play system), all while securing possession, typically in a triangle or behind the net.  While they do this to some degree, this is clearly not the high paced skill focused Caps system we see now and the past.

However, you’re asu are correct with the fans being inaccurate about not shooting.  Many naive fans think the shot itself is meant only to score.  But we know that there are many plays where the shot is meant for rebounds, play off the boards, move the other teams D etc.

Does this mean you are happier with tonight’s (OT) loss to Columbus?
Caps outshot opponent for the first time in weeks. Also won more face offs. I thought the Caps outplayed them, but lost anyway.

I don’t care what the stats say, I’ll take a win over a loss any day

FFS - HIT HIM!!!
SHOOT - THE - PUCK
