It doesn't happen much anymore because right now Willy is the only one in the league under a microscope. Even Marchand isn't scrutinized this much. Point is, other players will intentionally put themselves in compromising positions around Willy in an effort to get the call and get Willy off the ice, and for an extended period of time. Guys that intend to make a career of this game learn early on how to fool the zebras. It is the reason the league put in the diving rule, which is rarely called.
Back from the game. The real star of this game was Holtby. The defense hung him out to dry, over and over again. NJ had at least half a dozen breakaways/2 on 1's that they managed well, and he stopped ALL of them. When it was 4-2 Caps it could have just as easily been 6-4 NJ. And the refs missed an egregious one where a NJ player stuck his stick right in Holtby's mask.
The stick under Holtby's mask belonged to Eller I believe. It was definitely one of our guys. Both sticks were together and i could see how someone there without replay would see it as a Devils penalty.
I'm curious if anyone here actually saw the butt end by the Devil player. I never did see it and they wouldnt show a replay. Did it even happen? Or was it a make up call for the bad call on Wilson?
They never showed it. I never understood why they miss the opportunity to show the fans the infraction, even when they have extra time.
COS WE.RE THE CAPS LUV!
No, I'm talking about the Comcast production team dear. They often frustrate me by failing to shine light on many penalties so we can see if they were warrantedd.
the NHL channel gave Backy the #1 star of the night for his 2nd career hat trick, which I could’ve sworn they said in house and in the post game that it was his 3rd
No supplemental discipline for Wilson, so that is good news and the right decision. In the arena they said it was Backstrom’s third hat trick but apparently one was in the post season so officially he only has two in the regular season. Stats are based on the regular season.
