After the past few games, to me the most interesting story line of this season may be:  Is now finally the moment when, for the first time, Tom Wilson is REALLY unleashed on the NHL?  To think that he is JUST NOW beginning to come into his full man strength, and he is combining it with undeniable world-class hockey skills, is going to be an immense task for opposing teams to handle with Ovechkin on the other wing.  Now we need to get Kuznetsov back so that either he or Backstrom can center the line.  Personally, I like the idea of interchanging Kuzy and Backstrom between lines 1 and 2 during the season, and even within games if things aren't going well, because the two of them drive the play in the offensive zone in two entirely different ways and at two entirely different tempos.  Let opponents try to deal with THAT in addition to the strength of the Ovie/Wilson combo.

Wilson is a dynamic force! He influences the game as much as Ovie and Kuzy, imo, but in different ways.. Very cool to see him living up and exceeding expectations!!

Couple things (or maybe more than a couple)...after the fact as usual.  I watched the game from about 11:30 - 1:30  (actually fell asleep at the end of the third) :(

Anyway

I don't understand all the "hate" for Eller.  He has filled his role (third line center) quite adequately over the last three seasons at a reasonable price.  I though his first season he played much better than his stats or numbers indicated.  Last season was probably a career year for him, but he does score some timely goals.  He hustles, he USUALLY plays decent two-way center.  He has some skills.  He can handle/protect the puck fairly well.  I think he is missing some offensive finish (maybe cause he's Danish...yuk yuk) which is why he is a 3rd line center.
I will acknowledge he is not having a good year this year, but considering the alternatives..., I think he is about what we paid for and should expect.  When you have Backy and Kuzy as your barometer, then any third line center is going to pale in comparison.  All things considered, I think Eller is just fine.

Why do Montreal fans boo Eller?  They team didn't want him and traded him to the Caps.  The Caps eventually resigned him.  How is this Eller's fault?  Do you just boo ANY player that used to be on your team or is there something I'm missing about Eller specifically?  Do Caps fans boo Forsberg or Brower or Schmitty...etc  when they play in Washington?  Do the Blues fans boo Oshie?

I'm not sure I'd pair him with Ovie/Wilson on the top line, but if you were to put Backy in there, would you really want a Eller/Vrana/Burka line(yikes).  Guess for emergency and trying to spread the talent and responsibility over the lines....

Geez, I'm starting to sound like Maako protecting Dylan here.

I didn't really like Burka on line 2, but Burka just isn't a 3/4 line guy.  Honestly, Burka needs to go.  He's dead weight, especially at the salary.  He can't break into the top two lines on this team and he IS NOT a 3/4 line guy.  He is overpaid for occasional glimpses of talent.  Move him and give someone else a 3/4 line role that fits it.

I like Bowey in the lineup and I'm really liking Boyd.  Boyd has some wheels and hopefully he is taking his chance and showing us something.  I'd rather see Boyd and Jaskin in the lineup before Burka. (yes, I realize they are centers/wings, etc) but make it fit.  When Oshie and Kuzy are back, you move eller to 3c, move Connolly and Stephenson to 3.  Boyd/Dowd at 4c with Jaskin and Smith Pelly (assuming all the lefties and righties fit

Anyway, pretty good game, except for about 90 seconds of it.  Felt bad for Copley - don't think that was on him, but 3 goals in 75 seconds gets anyone pulled.  Hope it does not effect his ju-ju.
Holtby looked good (sigh of relief)

Happy Turkey to all you peeps.  I'm out and probably miss the next three games altogether...well at least till I watch a replay next week sometime.

Hey Rich!
I stand solid with you about Eller, and yes, it’s not a popular opinion here!
My good buddy, DC, would definitely disagree with me on this one!
Can’t remember the exact date last year, but we touched on the subject of Eller, during one of our shoot-the-shit sessions, over “several”, brewskis and shots, in B-more!!
We found out that the expression “agree to disagree”, (followed by a fist bump, and a final drag on a good cigar), came fairly easy, with a good BAC goin on!!LOL🤣😂🤣🤪🤪

Eller, IMO, is quite unique, in that he epitomizes that rare class of NHL player, who has been obviously slighted, and under-gifted, in the NATURAL skills department, but over comes those shortcomings, with a complete and unapologetic dedication, to his work ethic, professionalism, and unrelentless hustle!
Couple all of this with a “never quit” attitude, and you have a guy, who’s total package is now, very respectably, at NHL caliber, hands down!!

His style, gives coaches no choice, but to notice him! Trotz, whom I greatly respect, certainly did!! Hence, Eller has been thusly rewarded for three years, with a SOLID hold on 3C!

Eller is TOUGH as nails! But not a fighter! Yes, the two qualities can exist together, and be successful!! And not to be confused with SOFT! Nick Backstrom is TOUGH as nails!! Not a fighter either! Not SOFT! Not bad company to be in!

Does Eller commit the occasional dumb ass penalty? Yes
Does he have stellar puck handling skills? No
Does he fight well? No, will most likely come out on the short end of the stick!
BUT....

Eller is great on PK, period!
Eller has high hockey IQ
His hustle and drive make him a defensive, “pain in the ass”, when opponent is in our zone! Not by a big hit, and takeaway, like Wilson can do, but with numerous persistent, and irritating, mini-disruptions, that, at a minimum, often cause chaos to an opponent, attempting their initial zone setup, OR, help set up a takeaway for one of his linemates! This is, obviously, not literally scoring goals, but nonetheless, an absolutely essential and often overlooked, fundamental element of puck possession and offensive production!!

He can reasonably be expected to achieve 15-20 goals, and 30-40 points, per season, for his remaining, relatively INEXPENSIVE contract!!

Lastly, his hustle and determination, often put him in “the right place, at the right time”!
Ya know...like the OT winner, gm3, 1st round, last year in Columbus! OR maybe, just maybe, the FUCKIN game winner in Vegas, for nothing less than THE STANLEY!! (not to mention, last nites OT winner, in Montreal)!

At the price he comes at, I’ll take Lars anytime!! (So did Trotzy and Rierden)!

Ok DC, take it a little easy on me, here, or I’ll just have to come up there and get drunk with you  again, brother! LOL!

Eller has definately gotten rid or his "Ellen" moniker he earned a couple years ago, the angst against him this game was that dumbassed play that looked like a boarding major but was called as a high sticking double minor in the 3rd period

I have to disagree with you as well. Eller bad plays out weight the good. Last game he managed to score the OT goal but he did not have a good game. He is a very inconsistent player. He has a couple of good games and people are fooled into thinking we have some special. Those people give him a free pass when he shits the bed for the next 10.
His strength is his puck possession. He has no other strengths. He doesnt have a great shot. He isnt a great passer in fact most of the time he doesnt even look when he passes. The odd time one if his passes gets through. Most are turnovers. He also takes lazy and selfish penalties. Like the double minor against Montreal. He is also overrated defensively. He has been in the ice for more goals against than any other Caps forward. And its not like he is matching against top lines. That's Backstrom line that gets that assignment.
Comparing Eller to Backstrom is an insult to Backstrom. Sure he has some decent games but when he isn't playing well he is closer to a Burakovsky than he is a Backstrom.
I have never been a fan of his game because if his inconsistent play. I have lost whatever respect I had for him in the first game of the season. When he was over celebrating on the 7th goal of a 7-0 game. Eller got his ass kicked for that. I would have kicked his ass too. It was classless.

There are reasons that Eller is a 3C and not a top 6 forward.  You're right, he isn't really a passing center.  No, he doesn't have a great shot, but he gets some chippy, greasy goals, which is why he seems to be good for 15-20 per year (and those are the goals that DC likes, anyway).  Burakovsky has a GREAT shot, and what is that getting us?  Eller's a real asset on the PK.  And the REAL point is, he and DSP were the forwards who really gave us the shot in the arm we needed in support of the stars that got us to the Cup.

That being said, he hasn't had a very good first quarter of the season.  So be it.  There are always a few players on a team that are underperforming, and it's a special concern in the early stages of a season after a Stanley Cup.  Heck, the Pens seem to have stunk up the joint in the early stages of the past two seasons as Stanley Cup champs.  There's no reason to make hasty declarations about Eller at this point; we pretty much know what he is, and he isn't yet old enough that we'd worry about him falling off a cliff because of age.  Eller is precisely the type of player about which I am comfortable with taking a wait-and-see attitude.

Count me as an Eller supporter, he is a solid third line center who can fill in on one of the top two lines and do an adequate job.  He does take too many penalties but overall he is a positive player and BMac made a smart decision in extending his contract at a very reasonable rate.

Damn right!

Eller is what he is, a one-way. at best primary offensive center that can’t crack the top two lines.  While he gets a big goal now then, he simply is not the excellent two-way, shutdown, possession, and special teams player that is needed for the the cliche “3rd Center” that has been branded on his forehead.  I can’t think of many teams that would tolerate their “3rd Center”, being below 50% faceoffs, or the substandard Dplay. or mistakes.
(correction, he’s currently above 50% for once)

Ideally he’d be moved over to wing and let Stevenson/Boyd take over that spot and have Ellen take Connolly or Buras side

See what I mean. I agree with you on a lot of things. On most teams your 3rd line center is more know as a checker. But on this team Backstrom is the checking center.

Certainly respect your different view, no problem!
I’ll clarify one or two things here.
I agree, it would be an insult to Backstrom, had I said that Eller and Backy were on EQUAL par, Maaco!

If I say that a fresh dog terd, and a rotten apple are both SOFT, then the EMPHASIS of the comparison is on the word SOFT!! That is NOT saying that an apple is a dog terd, thereby INSULTING the apple!

With Eller and Backstrom, the commonality is they aren’t known to be fighters, but also are not soft!

I would strongly disagree with your claim that his bad outweighs his good! This is where we simply differ in opinion, and realize that it’s time for you to take DC and I up on the invite to visit here! We hit the cigar club, slam a few shots, and have a blast of a time, that makes our micro-disagreements, pale in comparison!! Get with it, Bro, and come on up!
