The reason this Caps team is winning is not luck, lightning in a bottle, or catching the other teams off guard. We are winning because each and every player is 100% all in and committed to never letting up. They are also well coached. Based on what I saw in the first three series I had faith that coaching would correct any issues in the first game, which I correctly predicted we might lose. I had no doubt in this series that our guys were going to dominate. In fact, I have been strangely peaceful and confident this entire post season for some reason I can't explain.  I watched Vegas play earlier in the playoffs and I was sure we could shut them down the same way we did two other very fast teams. This Capitals team is winning because they all found their heart and realized the level of grit it takes to win in the playoffs. Besides having skilled players you have to be hungrier than the other team. Skill we always knew we had, We just never saw it materialize consistently and across the board, especially in the post season.  I'm still having trouble digesting the fact that the Caps have so dramatically found THE SWITCH this post season.

One more game boys!

This is going to be very emotional for me as I know it will be for all of you.
Be careful what you ask for America; you just might get it.

I know I said it early R3, this is the first time I've seen the playoff gear from this team in the OV era

Yep and yep.  It's a beautiful thing.  I've already said it too.  Refreshing to see, playing with tenacity, balls, and as a TEAM.  Taking care of the crease and each other.  Team defense is a thing of beauty - pack mentality - nastiness.

It is pretty amazing how this seemed to materialize from practically out of nowhere.  I just hope they stick to it and keep upping it.

Yep, ergo “lighting in a bottle” . . . There has been 10 attempts at this, and as you said, ‘out of nowhere’ here is the joint attitude and effort from about the most unlikely group in that time. . .

Or maybe it wasn't the most unlikely group to get the right attitude, precisely BECAUSE it isn't the most talented group.  Having lost some of the supposed talent and depth that was perhaps thought to be sufficient to win a championship, it finally sank in to this group of players that they had to find some other way to win than simply trying to outskill the opposition.

I happen to think that this series is not over by a longshot, and it isn't because I think that this team is all of a sudden going to discard what got them here. My thinking is that Vegas is good in its own right (if a little bit of a one-trick pony maybe), and the problem with hockey is that it is a largely random game.  It happens all the time that the team that is better, or plays better on a particular day, still doesn't win the game.  If Fleury suddenly finds his mojo again, this series could end up being very iffy again.

I absolutely agree.  It is by no means finished and I'm not really more comfortable than I'd be if they were down in the series.  I'm encouraged by their game as a whole but yes, things can turn in a hurry.

I'm glad the next game is away.  For whatever reason, they are playing better away.  Less distractions on the road I guess.  They also have the long change during most of the game and players need to more careful.

Uh, no.  Both the home and visiting teams have their long change in the 2nd period (and the first overtime period, if it happens).  They defend opposite goals AND sit on opposite sides of the red line, so the periods of long change are the same for both teams.

The reason I am uneasy is that, being at game 4, it felt like an anomaly.  The knights missed (literally) several good chances.  The Caps, to their credit, generated a lot of blown coverage by the Vegas defense and wide-open looks -- and about 2/3 of them ended up in the net, because the Caps also shot the puck extremely well.  Hockey is truly a game where you are never as good as you look when things are going good, nor as bad as you look when things are going bad.

I was going to comment on the long change but you already did it.

Depends what you mean by talented.  This group was built for stats and primarily entertainment purposes, on basis of 6 of the “top 9” being one way offensive players, with one popular shoot-out specialist, with Backstrom to clean up the mental mistakes and Willie to makeup for all their lack of physicality.  So lack of skill wasn’t the issue.

But somehow, they are playing with the attitude, intensity and hustle that Beagle, Wilson, Stephenson, and DSP show naturally.   Hell I’d go as far as to say Bura, Varna, and Connelly playing like this is more unlikely and improbable than Beagle dangling through two defenders, then doing a toe drag, spin, backhand flip over the goalies shoulder, knocking the Gatorade bottle up and then catching it himself. So possible however extremely, very unlikely

Whatever got a big portion of a group to care more about the Stanley Cup than the World Cup (or whatever that other tournament is), agree, and learn to play a system that will in the playoffs, and at the intensity needed is a mystery.

Did Ovie finally say “This is my fuckin team, this is how we’re gonna play, follow me”?  Did Trotz make it clear to Bura, Connolly, Varna, etc., that they can easily be replaced by players who would do what tells them?  Both?  Who knows, but I can almost guarantee most of this team just didn’t turn to playoff mode like a Wilson, Beagle, Stephenson, or DSP does naturally.

As for Vegas, Maaco did predict a Fluery meltdown, which we saw.  Now the bet is which Fluery will we see now.  As for them changing things up, Gallants been giving us a gift.

What got them here as worked great up til now, but that can run out.  VGK is loaded with players with IQ that have played different systems.  To assume that they couldn’t tweek the system, the lines, the matchups to adjust to what we’re doing, leaves few things other than stubbornness as an explication.

One of those could very well be fatigue.  They played three series against teams that were to a man  bigger, stronger, and meaner than anyone we did.

This leaves a dangerous opponent.  If Fleury comes back to form, Gallant plays a chess game, and that results in them owning the tempo. . . It may not be pretty

It’ll be interesting to see what Gallant does with the long/last change amongst other things.  He hasn’t appeared to be very willing to mix things up, let alone adjust on his end

Caps have the desire and determination. Vegas has desperation.
When desperation meets determination it quickly turns to frustration.
Close 'em out boys.
Sometimes you just gotta knock them over

I agree with this post. Always thought we had the talent. Thought we needed more guys that played with heart. We did add a couple of those type of players. But the difference us this team us buying in. Everyone is playing fairly well. Everyone is playing the system. It seems getting past the Pens made this team believe they can win.
BTW before the season started a lot if people didn't think this team would even be a playoff team. I always thought this team would gave to go through some growing pains with some new players and some rookies. But I never had a doubt that this team wouldn't be a contender. However they have exceeded my expectations. Just fucking finish it tonight.
