To use a horse racing analogy, this season feels like a stakes race where a horse of lesser pedigree runs, for him, a great race and the jockey actually works him into contention as they round the last turn and head into the stretch. Then that horse, having given what he can, fades down the stretch as a top-rated thoroughbred takes the win. He ends up back in the pack, his final finish depending on the finish of other lesser horses in the race.
The Caps were just hanging on last night against a better team after getting the early lead, when "the breaks" at the end of the game did them in. This game sort of felt like a microcosm of the whole season. It's hard to envision how they make the playoffs now; if not, best outcome is a total collapse, results-wise at least (say, no more than one additional win out of the last 6). That still has the possibility to knock them down a few positions in the standings/up a few positions in the draft.
