--- Quote from: Mickstix on Wednesday February 14, 2024, 11:07:58 AM Eastern ---They all disappear where it really matters. Not sure what's happened to Wilson. They speculated Carbs wanted to make it tougher on the MacKinnon line. Not sure how many minutes they had, but it was probably more than the 2nd or 3rd line? Maybe more than any line?

Ovechkin ended up with the top TOI among forwards, as he commonly does. Wilson ended up 2nd.

And by the way, Carlson had another 28 minute game last night. I realize people here are down on him, but year after year, coach after coach, Carlson is the guy who gets significantly more minutes on defense than any other player. Partially due to his PP time of course, but he is usually several minutes ahead of the next guy. And Carbery seems to be riding him especially hard recently. This at the same time he hasn't been shy about reducing minutes for other high-paid players when their play doesn't warrant it (cough, Kuznetsov, Oshie at the beginning of the year when he was struggling). If Carlson is so bad, the elephant in the room remains: Why aren't his minutes regulated more in line with his "actual contributions?"
BlackIce:
OOPS - edit to previous post: My bad. TOI among forwards - Strome first, Wilson 2nd, Ovie 3rd.

I’ve noted before that my primary problem with Carlson is his contract. Good on him for getting it. I don’t see an $8M a year Dman in him, and he never was a norris candidate. He obviously brings something to this squad but too frequently the eye test says it’s not his prowess on D.
Mickstix:
That's the sad thing. At 34 years old he's still the best overall D they have to offer.. You'd think one of the younger, faster guys could be a solid D that a coach trusts, but.. :-\

i dont think carbs is down on wilson or that his 4th line assignment was anything other than...
He realizes his team cant compete in scoring so he puts his best/fastest defensive forwards together in attempt to slow down the Avs top line.
I thought Malenstyn and AK and Willie and Dowd all had good games. Probably the most minutes any game for Malenstyn yet...be curious to know that.
Carlson must be playing well, cause im not calling him out every game all year long like I used to in the old days. My issue with him was he never had enough snarl...and then he got that contract which he has never been worth. His game has improved greatly over time...although hes slowed a bit the last couple years.
He does do a TON for this team and like...someone said...every single coach has relied on him more than probably any single other player on the ice in the entirety of the time he's been here. That's not just luck or coincidence, and its not about marketing like playing Ovi is.
